1939, Joseph Cummings Rowell: 1853-1938, by Benjamin P. Kurtz
Joseph Cummings Rowell, 1853-1938
Joseph Cummings Rowell, 1853-1938
His own life at Berkeley during all these years was an open book for anyone to read,a life of unselfish, single-minded devotion to the good of the University in general and to the development of the library in particular. He himself said his life had been prosaic and uneventful, "just a succession of years devoted to the upbuilding of the library." Some 150,000 students and many hundreds of faculty members had seen him at his task during those three score years and more. But comparatively few knew anything of his family background. Yet that background was also unique in kind and interest. And until one has a knowledge of it he cannot see this remarkable librarian foursquare, with full understanding of his singular fortitude, patience, and sweetness, beauty and self-abnegation of character, human sympathy and steadfast rightness and righteousness. For ten years by his own persistent efforts he had accumulated money, information and books and other experience, and piety. He had become profoundly interested in the wandering life and spiritual welfare of sailors. "God seemed to have written 'Sailor' across my heart." He was happy, therefore, to accept a call to go as Chaplain to Panama, under the joint auspices of the American Seamen's Friend Society and the American and Foreign Christian Union. He thought that when the railroad across the isthmus was finished, Panama, at the Pacific terminal, would become an important seaport, and that it ought to have a chaplain interested in sailors. "Panama," he said to his sponsors, "is a pestilential hole, and it will be hard to find a good man to go there. I am tough. I can stand the climate if anyone can. I will go."

The gompertz model, used to predict maximum life spans for different species,is named after 19thcentury British actuary benjamin gompertz.

IN 1996, FINCH AND USC
However, in a study published in the May 1996 issue of the Journal of Gerontology, Finch and Pike found that people living in wealthy, developed regions are at a 10-times lower risk for disease and environmental hazards than those living in parts of Asia and Africa.
By reducing infectious disease, accidents and natural disasters to one-50th the current level, the scientists calculate, half of all 50-year-olds could live up to 120 years. This, however, depends on huge medical advances.
FINCH HAS BEEN INTERESTED
As an undergraduate at Yale University in the late 1950s, Finch studied physics, as did many young men caught up in the post-Sputnik science boom.
Finch completed a thesis on the molecular mechanisms of aging and took a post at Cornell University in 1970, but was lured to Los Angeles in 1972 by the prospect of starting a new school of gerontology, the first of its kind in the United States.
Finch and Thomas Kirkwood of the University of Newcastle, in England, had the notion that chance variation, while clearly recognized for years, has never been properly observed. How else to explain genetically identical worms, raised under the same laboratory conditions, dying over a three-fold range of ages? Or inbred mice, born of the same mother and reared in the same environment, dying over a similarly wide variation? Human twin studies also exhibit unusual differences in life spans.

Methods of Population Projections
Reading: Klosterman chaps 1, 2, 3; Klosterman et al Chaps 4, 5, 6
Introduction
  • Importance of Population Projections
  • Analytical Levels of Population Projections
  • Aggregate Level
Importance of Population Projections
  • Among the most important studies done by local, state, and national planners
  • Important for local comprehensive plans
  • Important for future land uses - residential, commercial, etc.
Analytical Levels of Population Projections
  • Aggregate Methods
    • Deals with total population
    • Focuses on total trends without accounting for underlying trends
    • Uses mainly extrapolation methods

  • Disaggregate Methods
    • Breaks population down into subcomponents
    • Attempts to find underlying causes for past and future trends
    • Uses mainly cohort component technique
    Aggregate Methods of Population Projections
    • Two-stage process
      • Curve fitting
      • Curve extrapolation
    • Types of Curves
      • Linear
      • Geometric
      • Parabolic
      • Modified Exponential
      • Gompertz
      • Logistic
      The Linear Curve
      • Simplest and most widely used extrapolation curve
      • General form: Y c = a + bx
        • Y c is the projected value of the dependent variable
        • a and b are the parameters
        • a is the intercept and b the slope
      • Assumes constant growth increments
      • Important to evaluate other curves before using the linear curve
      • Selecting the best linear curve - use the method of of least squares.

Gompertz Residence
Paradise Valley, Montana
Photo courtesy RoTo The site consists of 14 acres at the edge of the cobbled alluvial fan of the Absoroka Mountains in Paradise Valley, Montana. The house, designed by RoTo Architects, sits on the edge of the only sheltering feature, an ancient bank of the now receded Yellowstone River, in a valley famous for its winds, "Marlboro Country" views, and storms. The land is treeless, and the perfectly parabolic bank that dissects the property in a north south line anchors the project. The owner's original program called for a part time residence to be constructed in two parts.
Site Panorama
Model photo courtesy RoTo The first scheme was defined by a mirroring of the arcing bank, and the creation of a "hull" that hovered just below its crest and opened to the sun and staggering vistas to the east and south. Both phases of the original design were massed low and horizontal. The aspects of the place, the wind, the sky, and storms, compelled the owner to move back to the valley after a nearly five year absence. He poetically described the phenomenology of climbing up to experience the sky, rather than viewing it from the earth. A part of the house, he said, needed to climb above its horizon. A neighboring silo provided his example.

DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS
Difference Equations and Recursive Relations in this period have been studied by several mathematicians. Some of these mathematicians include:
Babbage
Bessel Farey Gauss ... Gompertz ,and Legendre
Babbage and the DifferenceEngine
Ordinary arithmeticcalculating machines, in Babbage's day, could only carry out individualcalculations. They were useful only in the computation of single sums involvingaddition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Charles Babbage worked on a calculating machine that could be adapted specially to performthe Method of Differences. The Method of Differences is away of integrating"differences". A"difference", written D f(x), is simply the difference between the values of a function taken attwodifferent values of its variable, x. For example: D f(x)=f(x )-f(x ). A "differential" is much the same thingexcept that the difference between the two valuesof x used, x andx , is reduced [gradually by a limiting process] by an infinitesimalamount, df(x). A "differential" is thus an infinitesimal "difference".Conversely, a "difference" can be seen as akind of finite"differential",one which uses an interval of a finite sizeinstead of an infinitesimal. The Method of Differences is a practical numerical technique. It can beused to calculate exactly the numerical values of any mathematical functionthat can be expressed as a simple polynomial .

TUMORALE
