Benjamin Gompertz came from a family of merchants who left Holland and settled in England. He was one of three sons born in England to the Dutch family which, although from Holland, was Jewish. Gompertz was self educated, learning mathematics by reading Newton and Maclaurin . He had to take this route since he was denied admission to universities since he was Jewish. In fact he was greatly helped in his mathematical education by the Society of Mathematicians of Spitalfields which was later to become the London Mathematical Society . Gompertz, writing to De Morgan , explained how he came to be a member of the Society [5]:- As to the Mathematical Society, of which I was a member when only years of age, having been, contrary to the rules, elected under the age of . How I came to be a member of that Society - and continued so until it joined the Astronomical Society , and then was the President - was: I happened to pass a bookseller's small shop of second hand books, kept by a poor taylor, but a good mathematician, John Griffiths. I was very pleased to meet a mathematician, and I asked him if he would give me some lessons; and his reply was that I was more capable to teach him, but he belonged to a society of mathematicians, and he would introduce me. I accepted the offer, and I was elected, and had many scholars then to teach, as one of the rules was, if a member asked for information, and applied to one who could give it, he was obliged to give it, or fine one penny.

He applied the calculus to actuarial questions and he is best remembered for Gompertz's Law of Mortality. Gompertz, in 1825, showed that the mortality rate increases in a geometric progression. Hence, when death rates are plotted on a logarithmic scale, a straight line known as the Gompertz function is obtained. Gompertz also wrote about scientific instruments, writing Theory of astronomical instruments A new instrument called the differential sextant (1825) and On the converted pendulum He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819. (Redirected from Gompertz Benjamin Gompertz March 5 July 14 London England ), self educated mathematician denied admission to universities since he was Jewish. Fellow of the Royal Society from 1819. Gompertz is today mostly known for his Gompertz' law of mortality , a demograhic model published in 1825. The model can be written in this way: when N t ) represents number of individuals at time t r the intrinsic growth rate and K number of individuals in equilibrium.

    FOUNDING AMERICA'S SOCIAL SYSTEMS
Social Security and Medicare are today considered landmarks in the long struggle to achieve social justice for the nation's elderly, poor, sick and disabled. Most of our unemployed, indigent and otherwise needful citizens could rely only on the meager help of voluntary support such as public charity - until 1940. During that year, the federal government posted off its first social security payment. The even rewarded a mission by a handful of staunch crusaders to lift the burden of poverty and despair from tens of millions of Americans for generations to come. Among the handful were two compassionate Jewish activists in government service who led that campaign and rightfully deserve being called the fathers of the social security in America. Despite their historic accomplishments, both remain virtually unknown. Their paths had met and we meet them now. ISAAC RUBINOW (1875-1936) b. Gordon, Russia Medical Doctor/Economist/Social Worker. He emigrated to the United States and soon after earned a degree in medicine. But he left his practice within several years, distressed at how our medical system ignored the many without the means for decent care. He switched to economics, which together with his knowledge of medicine, would serve as tools to help reverse the system's insensitivity and disregard. Rubinow insisted that all Americans should enjoy a guarantee of social insurance to provide for human needs "without injury to the man's ego and self-respect."
