This award-winning globe could help children become A+ geography students. The Explorer Globe II is jam-packed with hundreds of facts, trivia, and useful scholastic information about every aspect of the geographical world. It electronically verbalizes everything from area population, capitol city/country, state/province, large bodies of water, currencies, high points, distance, and more. Other remarkable features make the Explorer an even more useful reference tool. It has a world clock that, once set from your home area, will tell the time in every other part of the world. And any country can be selected to hear a sample its national music (yes, Tahiti does have a national anthem). The globe sits on a sturdy base, which features a dashboard full of interactive functions and an attached soft-tipped stylus. This stylus is the key instrument: use it to touch virtually any point on the surface of the globe to retrieve information. Diane Beall

Opening statement from "On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances"
Introduction
Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) has left his mark on many aspects of modern chemistry and physics. He wrote seminal papers on mechanics, optics, statistical mechanics, vector analysis, and many other fields. However, the work that he is principally remembered for in the materials field is on thermodynamics. His key paper - "On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances" - while published in the obscure Transactions of the Connecticut Academy provided the first means for determining the conditions for equilibrium and stability and also gave a list of other tools to chemists. Below are some extracts from his papers and some biographical information. Also included is a list of Gibbs' thermodynamic papers.
Biographical Information
Josiah Willard Gibbs was born in New Haven, Conneticut on February 11, 1839 and died in the same city on April 28, 1903. He was the fourth child and only son of Josiah Willard Gibbs, Professor of Sacred Literature in the Yale Divinity School, and Mary Anna Gibbs. Gibbs' family background is intertwined with the early universities in the United States. A relative on his maternal side was the first president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) and on his paternal side was a president of Harvard University.

The Scientific Papers of J. Willard Gibbs, Vol. 1: Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics can be a difficult subject to master because it is presented in different ways in different disciplines. For example, the terminology and symbols used by mechanical engineers are often different from those used by physical chemists, and so on. The papers by Gibbs contained in this book, represent the foundation of the thermodynamics of mixtures. These are some of the greatest scientific papers ever written. The papers contain a comprehensive treatment of equilibrium thermodyna... more...

Gibbs, Josiah Willard (18391903) Gibbs was born in Connecticut where his father was a literature professor at Yale. Gibbs attended Yale and was better known as a humanities student during his undergraduate days than a mathematician. However, for his graduate work at Yale, he worked on an applied science problem, and his degree is considered the first engineering PhD and second science PhD awarded in America. Gibbs then visited Europe for three years, mostly studying and working in mathematical physics. He returned to Yale to become a professor of mathematics. He made contributions to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, and statistical mechanics. For his foundational work, Gibbs is known as the father of vector analysis. Aristotle used vectors to describe the effects of forces, and the idea of resolving vectors into geometric components parallel to the coordinate axes came from Descartes The algebra of vectors we use today was developed simultaneously and independently in the 1870s by Gibbs and by the English mathematical physicist Oliver Heaviside The works of Gibbs and Heaviside grew out of more complicated mathematical theories developed some years earlier by the Irish mathematician William Hamilton and the German geometer Hermann Grassmann Hamilton’s quaternions and Grassmann’s algebraic forms are still in use today but tend to appear in more theoretical work.

Josiah Willard Gibbs Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics
J. Willard Gibbs

Gibbs is considered by many historians of science to be the most original and gifted scientist that the new world has produced to date. Among the many fields that he pioneered, Statistical Mechanics is most closely and uniquely identified with his name. Gibbs's work has been so influential in giving form to this subject that this 1902 volume could almost serve as a textbook today. This book will interest both historians of science and those who wish to probe the fundamentals of statistical mechanics.

Gibbs and Statistical Mechanics a Century Ago
Martin J. Klein (Yale University) This paper will describe what we know about the development of Gibbs's ideas on statistical mechanics, ideas that were published only in their fully developed form in his book of 1902. His work will be given its historical setting in his own career and also in the context of the physics of the time.
Gibbs in Europe
Ole Knudsen (History of Science Dept., University of Aarhus, Denmark) In 1866, at the age of 27, J. Willard Gibbs set out from his native New Haven on a three-year study tour that was to take him to Paris, Berlin, and Heidelberg. His previous education at Yale had given him an adequate grounding in geometry and mechanics, and a PhD in engineering (the first in the United States); he came back with enough knowledge of higher mathematics and advanced physics to begin a brilliant career as a mathematical physicist. Based on the extant source material, mainly three notebooks with entries on the courses he attended and the books and papers he read during his trip, I will give an impression of the content and style of the physics he was exposed to in Europe, and attempt to show in what way his later work was influenced by his European experience.

The Willard Gibbs Medal
Founded by William A. Converse
The award was founded in 1910 by William A. Converse (1862-1940), a former chairman and secretary of the Chicago Section. The medal was named for Professor Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) of Yale University. Gibbs, whose formulation of the Phase Rule founded a new science, is considered by many to be the only American born scientist whose discoveries are as fundamental in nature as those of Newton and Galileo.
When Betz purchased the Dearborn/Grace division, the BetzDearborn Foundation had most generously continued the historic relationship between the Section and Dearborn. However, since GE purchased Betz/Dearborn we are no longer receiving financial support for the medal or the dinner, and the Section would welcome a few (or a lot of) benefactors who would be willing to provide some support to the Willard Gibbs Medal Fund. Any contribution would be appreciated. We are most appreciative of previous support from the BetzDearborn Foundation.
The purpose of the award is "To publicly recognize eminent chemists who, through years of application and devotion, have brought to the world developments that enable everyone to live more comfortably and to understand this world better." Medalists are selected by a national jury of eminent chemists from different disciplines. The nominee must be a chemist who, because of the preeminence of his work in and contribution to pure or applied chemistry, is deemed worthy of special recognition.
