Main Page See live article Alphabetical index Giuseppe Peano Giuseppe Peano ) was an Italian mathematician Giuseppe Peano was born on August 27 , 1858 at a farm near the village of Spinetta in northeastern Italy. In he enrolled at the University of Turin in the same region of Italy. He graduated in with 'High Honours' and began his teaching career. Peano was a University assistant between 1880 and 1882. First to Enrico D'Ovidio and then to Angelo Genocchi (the chair of Infinitesimal Calculus ). In Peano published his first paper. In the course of his life, Peano had over two hundred papers and books published (most of them on mathematics). By , due to Genocchi's ill health, Peano was in charge of the Infinitesimal Calculus course where the students made fun of him because of an inability to pronounce the letter 'r'. His first major work a text book on calculus, credited to Genocchi, was published in . On the July 27 he married Carola Crosio. The following year Peano's father died. Peano also published his first book dealing with mathematical logic. This book first uses the symbols for Union and Intersection of sets as are now used today. Carteggi matematici di Angelo Guerraggio Dipartimento di Matematica, Università Bocconi, Milano Centro PRISTEM Di fatto, oggi nessuno più scrive a un amico o a un collega per posta (intesa nel senso di “posta cartacea”). Questo tipo di corrispondenza è sempre più raro e (eventualmente) limitato a un primo contatto o ad atti, in qualche modo, ufficiali. L’e-mail è diventato in tutto il mondo il mezzo di comunicazione più rapido e più diffuso. La situazione era radicalmente diversa, solo dieci anni fa. Il telefono – per problemi di costo – non aveva ancora soppiantato la “classica” lettera e anche i matematici comunicavano tra loro per posta, magari ricorrendo all’espresso per diminuire i tempi. I loro carteggi rimangono così – sostanzialmente ancora per tutto il Novecento – uno degli osservatori privilegiati per accedere al mondo della comunicazione scientifica. Molte lettere sono andate perdute: per colpa di traslochi o dell’incuria o delle guerre o, ancora, di quell’irrefrenabile esigenza di ordine che, ogni tanto, prende ciascuno di noi e ci “obbliga” a buttare via le “cose” vecchie. Molte, comunque, si sono salvate. L’elenco dei carteggi noti non è trascurabile, anche se ci si limita alla Matematica italiana post-unitaria (degli ultimi 100-150 anni). Eccone l’elenco, nella speranza che non sia troppo incompleto: 1) L’archivio Betti, conservato presso la Normale di Pisa, studiato – tra gli altri – da U. Bottazzini e pubblicato da R.Gatto per quanto riguarda le lettere concernenti l’edizione degli Elementi di Euclide. Enrico Betti (1823 – 1892) è stato uno dei “padri fondatori” della Matematica italiana moderna. Fisico matematico, studioso delle funzioni di variabile complessa e di diverse questioni algebriche, amico di Riemann (che soggiornò a Pisa dal ‘63 al ‘65), è stato anche Direttore della “Normale” dal ‘65 fino alla morte, dando il primo contributo alla costituzione di quello che sarà il più importante centro di ricerca in Italia.

Giuseppe Peano Giuseppe Peano matemático e logicista italiano nasceu a 27 de agosto de 1858 em Spinetta, um vilarejo próximo à Cuneo cidade italiana em que ele e seu irmão caminhavam para freqüentar a escola. Em 1876, Peano se matriculou na Universidade de Turim para estudar engenharia, mas, depois decidiu cursar matemática tendo sido discípulo de Angelo Genocchi. Após a conclusão do seu curso, tornou-se, em 1880, professor assistente universitário. Peano, ainda como professor assistente toma consciência da necessidade de uma revisão dos fundamentos da matemática através de suas aulas de cálculo e decidiu lançar o seu primeiro livro, publicado em 1884 com o nome do mestre Genocchi sob o título " Calcolo differenziale e principii di calcolo integrale " ( Cálculo diferencial e princípios de cálculo integral ). O livro contém os teoremas usuais, mas com muitos aperfeiçoamentos de pormenor, formulados com grande precisão e demonstrados com deliberada ausência de recursos intuitivos. No campo da matemática propriamente dita, Peano estuda as equações diferenciais e apresenta o primeiro exemplo de obtenção de soluções por métodos de aproximação sucessiva. Independentemente desse método, desenvolveu a idéia do ponto de agrupamento de uma função. Em 1886, Peano assumiu ao cargo de professor na Academia Militar Real e, no mesmo ano, provou um dos teoremas mais importantes que diz o seguinte:
