November 2003 Feature: November 8th Total Eclipse of the Moon
On the night of November 8-9, a total eclipse of the Moon darkens the skies of North and South America, Europe and Africa. Although European and African nations won't witness the beginning of the eclipse till around midnight or even later, we in the eastern United States see the Moon moving into the Earth's dark shadow (umbra) at early evening. In our Eastern Time Zone, the eclipse starts at 6:32, with totality lasting from 8:06 to 8:31, and a partial eclipse remaining till 10:05 p.m.* An Historic Eclipse This eclipse serves to remind us of a special total lunar eclipse that took place on this same date 372 years ago: November 8-9, 1631. Like the upcoming eclipse, the 1631 production was visible in its entirety from both England and eastern North America, prompting an adventurous Old World professor and a scholarly New World explorer to try their hand at eclipse wizardry. Back then, lunar eclipses offered the only viable means of measuring across the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, and they wanted to use this eclipse to figure the distance from London, England to Charlton Island in James Bay, Canada. In 1631, it was exactly one century before the invention of the double-mirror quadrant (the forerunner of the modern marine sextant) and more than a century before the invention of a sea-worthy chronometer (clock). Accordingly, finding longitude, or east-west distance at sea in the seventeenth century was close to impossible, whereas measuring the difference in longitude between Old and New World stations on land was simply difficult but at least feasible.

GARDINER, FRANK (1830-c.1890),
bushranger, In gaol Gardiner was a model prisoner, and, when he had served eight years of his sentences, efforts were made by his friends and relations to secure his release. The fact that for about two years before his trial he had led an honest life was much in his favour, and in spite of some protests from members of the public he was released in July 1874 when he had served 10 years, on the understanding that he would leave Australia. He went to San Francisco, lived an honest life for many years, and died probably about 1890. He differed from many notorious bushrangers in that he came of respectable people, and was not actually guilty of murder; but he was fortunate in escaping the fate of some of his associates who were executed. THIRD GENERATION
Sir Thurstan de HOLLAND was born about 1220 in Upholland, Lancashire, England. He died after 1272 in Upholland, Lancashire, England. He married three times. Thurstan de Holland first married the daughter of Adam de Kellet, through whom the Hollands acquired manors in north Lancashire, as Lonsdale, Furness, and Chartmel. By his first wife he had five sons, Robert, William, Richard, Roger, Adam, and a daughter Margaret. Thurstan next married Juliana, a daughter of John Gellibrand, and had four more sons, Thurstan, Adam, Elias, and Simon. He married thirdly a daughter of Henry de Hale, an illegitimate son of Richard de Meath, Lord of Hale.
An old Norman-French petition from the 'loyal tenants of Hale' states that as Henry de Hale lay dying; came one Thurstan de Holland, who had married the daughter of said Henry and as he lay at the point of death [come il launguist a la mort] his memory lost, the said Thurstan took the said Henry's seal which he had round his neck, and made use of the seal to issue charters granting the said manor of Hale to himself, the said Thurstan, and Robert his son. He put out some old tenants and introduced new ones, which, perhaps accounts for the allegation. This accusation may not have been true, but evidently Thurstan de Holland was one of those vigorous, driven, men who, by local efforts and marriages, founded families. He lived long and is described as Sir Thurstan de Holland in witnessing a charter to Stanlaw Abby in 1272. (Researcher - Jasper Land Holland, II).

On 1 February, Gellibrand had his first meeting with William Buckley, an ex-convict who had absconded from the first Port Phillip at Sorrento in 1803 and lived with Aboriginal people until 1835. Gellibrand sought knowledge from Buckley about the Aboriginal communities he had lived with.

General Officers of the First AIF
Grades of General Officers There were four grades of general officers in the First AIF, these being from least to most senior: Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General. As with all other officer ranks, they could be temporary or substantive, except for brigadier general, which was always temporary. Temporary rank was generally granted while an officer was serving in a particular capacity. When the job lapsed, the officer returned to his substantive rank. This prevented an accumulation of officers at high grades without posts for them. The rank of Brigadier General was unusual in that it was only held as a temporary appointment in the AIF. Most officers also held temporary or substantive rank in the AMF (Australian Military Forces the Australian Army back at home) as well as in the AIF. Some officers were promoted within the AMF while serving with the AIF. Officers holding higher rank in the AMF than their substantive rank in the AIF were entitled to retain the higher rank as an honorary rank. Seniority was on the basis of the rank and date upon which one had been promoted within the AIF. Where an officer had not been promoted within the AIF, regular army officers carried their seniority according to their appointment date within the AMF. Reservists who had not been promoted ranked below all regular officers, with seniority according to their dates of appointment in the active forces. Retired officers who joined the AIF and had not been promoted carried their seniority according to the date of their appointment to the AIF, but below other officers of the same rank.
