Carl Friedrich Gauss

Gauss was born in Braunschweig , Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (now part of Germany ) as only son of lower-class uneducated parents. According to legend, while in elementary school summation Gauss earned a scholarship and in college, he independently rediscovered several important theorems; his breakthrough occurred in when he was able to show that any regular polygon , each of whose odd factors are distinct Fermat primes , can be constructed by ruler and compass alone, thereby adding to work started by classical Greek mathematicians. Gauss was so pleased by this result that he requested that a regular 17-gon be inscribed on his tombstone Gauss was the first to prove the fundamental theorem of algebra ; in fact, he produced four entirely different proofs for this theorem over his lifetime, clarifying the concept of

I am constantly amazed at how little he is known in the United States. Almost no one outside of the science community has ever heard of him, let alone has any knowledge of the scope of his contributions. I grew up knowing about Gauss because of my relationship. Briefly, he had three sons. Two of them, Eugene and Charles Wilhelm, came to the United States in the 1830s and settled in Missouri. This site consists of selections from my family's private collection that concern Gauss, himself, plus links about Gauss from the Web. For more information on some of his descendants, see my

CARL FRIEDRICH GAUSS (1777-1855)
Excerpt from MATH ODYSSEY 2000 Perhaps one of the reasons that Carl Friedrich Gauss was able to create so much mathematics in his lifetime was that he got a very early start. Just consider the following two events: when he was 3 years old he corrected his father's arithmetic, and in school, when he was in the third grade, he developed a formula for finding the sum of any arithmetic progression. Gauss was born in Brunswick, Germany as the only son of poor peasants living in miserable conditions. He exhibited such early genius that his family and neighbors called him the "wonder child". When he was two years old, he gradually got his parents to tell him how to pronounce all the letters of the alphabet. Then, by sounding out combinations of letters, he learned (on his own) to read aloud. He also picked up the meanings of the number symbols and learned to do arithmetical calculations. The story as told by Eric T. Bell: "One Saturday Gerhardt Gauss was making out the weekly payroll for the laborers under his charge, unaware that his young son was following the proceedings with critical attention. Coming to the end of his long computations, Gerhardt was startled to hear the little boy pipe up, 'Father, the reckoning is wrong, it should be ..." A check of the account showed that the figure named by the young Gauss was correct." Eric Temple Bell, Men Of Mathematics , Simon Schuster, Inc., New York, 1937

Carl Friedrich Gauss
Carl Friedrich Gauss lived around 1800 in present-day Germany. He was one of the most intelligent and productive mathematicians ever and made contributions in every mathematical field. When Gauss was 18, he found a way to construct the regular with seventeen sides , using only a straightedge and a compass. This had been thought impossible until then. Gauss had a special love for Number Theory. In a book he wrote, he developed a special algebra called modular arithmetic He also became known as an important astronomer when he found a way to calculate the paths of planets with a minimum of known data. Through his calculations the newly discoverd planet Ceres, which had gotten out of sight, could be found again. Gauss was interested in applied mathematics too. He was for example the first to invent the telegraph and together with a friend he constructed one. In addition to his published works, he also kept a very interesting correspondance and a diary. His diary, which was found about 50 years after his death, is full of mathematical discoveries, some of which earlier mathematicians had already discovered, but most of them stated results which other mathematicians redescovered after him. For example, he discovered a first non-Euclidean geometry while thinking about the consequences there would be if a line had more than one parallel line going through a given point. He already noticed then that this is a better starting point to describe the the physical space.
