The science of eugenics was invented by Sir Francis Galton, an amateur British scientist. The term eugenics was coined by Galton in 1883, though he had been doing research and writing in the field for some time before then. Galton also did research in several scientific fields including geography, meteorology and anthropology.
Galton was the cousin of Charles Darwin and the son of a wealthy, influential family. In 1869 Galton wrote a book called Heredity Genius in which he followed the lives of several accomplished men from, what he considered good families. These good families, Galton claimed, were more likely to produce intelligent and talented offspring. Galton concluded that it was possible to produce "a highly gifted race of men" by the process of selective breeding, which he later termed "positive" eugenics. Discouraging the reproduction of "undesirables" was subsequently termed "negative" eugenics. (Dolan) The “negative” eugenics movement was much stronger than the “positive” eugenics and swept across the U.S.

SIR francis galton (18221911). An English scientist, explorer and anthropologist, francis galton was a cousin of Charles Darwin
    http://www.ourheritage.net/index_page_stuff/Following_Trails/Blakiston/Blakiston
SIR FRANCIS GALTON (1822-1911) An English scientist, explorer and anthropologist, Francis Galton was a cousin of Charles Darwin and was one of the first to recognize how Darwin's theory of evolution was going to clash with theology. He coined the word eugenics to denote scientific endeavors to increase the proportion of persons with better than average genes. This was to be done through selective mating of marriage partners. Galton as a youth developed a passion for travel. He was taking medicine but when his father died he was left with sufficient fortune that he was free to indulge in his craving for travel. He wrote nine books and over 200 papers. They deal with many diverse subjects, including the use of fingerprints for personal identification, the correlation of calculus (a branch of applied statistics) - in both of which Galton was a pioneer - twins, blood transfusions, the art of travel in undeveloped countries, criminality and meteorology. He was also deeply concerned with improving standards of measurement. He was knighted in 1909 and died near London on January 17, 1911.

Francis Galton: English Men of Science (1874)
In 1869, Francis Galton had published the groundbreaking Hereditary Genius For the first time quantitative data and statistical analysis had been brought to bear on the problem of mental ability. Galton’s major finding was that the blood relatives of famous men exhibited a much greater frequency of eminence themselves than would have been expected from the frequency of eminence within the general population. As a descriptive fact, this was neither particularly surprising, given the stratified society of Victorian England, nor especially provocative. Galton’s inter-pretation of his findings, however, was both. From Galton’s perspective, the tendency for eminence to run in families was a direct reflection of heredity. Mental ability, in other words, was inherited. Not surprisingly, this interpretation of the data was not universally accepted. One of the most important critics of Galton’s view was the well-known Swiss botanist, Alphonse de Candolle. As a botanist, Candolle was well aware of the importance of environmental factors in the development of living organisms; and in 1872, he published a book, entitled Histoire des sciences et des savants depuis deux siècles in which he made a strong case for environmental influences on the achievement of eminence among scientists.

Galton, Sir Francis u n] Pronunciation Key Galton, Sir Francis , English scientist, founder of eugenics; cousin of Charles Darwin . He turned from exploration and meteorology (where he introduced the theory of the anticyclone ) to the study of heredity and eugenics (a term that he coined). Galton devised the correlation coefficient and brought other statistical methods into this work, which was carried on by his pupil Karl Pearson as the science of biometrics. In his Hereditary Genius (1869) he presented strong evidence that talent is an inherited characteristic. Galton established a system of classifying fingerprints that is still used today. He was knighted in 1909. The best known of his books is Inquiries into Human Faculty See his Memories of My Life The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

J R Newman, The World of Mathematics (New York 1956). I know of scarcely anything so apt to impress the imagination as the wonderful form of cosmic order expressed by the "Law of Frequency of Error." The law would have been personified by the Greeks and deified,if they had known of it. It reigns with serenity and in complete self-effacement,amidst the wildest confusion. The huger the mob, and the greater the apparent anarchy, the more perfect is its sway. It is the supreme law of Unreason. Whenever a large sample of chaotic elements are taken in hand and marshaled in the order of their magnitude, an unsuspected and most beautiful form of regularity proves to have been latent all along.
J R Newman, The World of Mathematics (New York 1956). Statistics are] the only tools by which an opening may be cut through the formidable thicket of difficulties that bars the path of those who pursue the Science of Man.

Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911) Sir Francis Galton was a man of diverse interests and achievements which range from African exploration to human heredity and eugenics. He was also one of the few 19 th Galton learned about the normal distribution from his friend, the mathematician William Spottiswoode. He immediately recognized "the far-reaching application of that extraordinarily beautiful law which I fully apprehended." Galton familiarized himself with the work of Adolph Quetelet, the Astronomer Royal of Belgium, who was actually the first person to apply the normal distribution to social statistics. But Galton was ultimately interested in the inheritance of what he called "talent and character" in human populations. Since these was difficult to quantify, he turned first to sweetpeas and measured seed diameters over two generations in 1875-76. This led to his discovery of regression to the mean, calculation of the first regression line, and calculation of the first coefficient of regression. Natural Inheritance (1889). There he discussed the properties of the normal curve and how it and other statistical techniques could be applied to biometric data from human beings. After

Founding the study of eugenics , he advocated furthering the birth-rate of the "fit" and reducing that of the "unfit." In the field of criminality, he originated the use of composite portraiture and urged the use of fingerprints as identification. Knighted in 1909.
