An explorer and anthropologist, Francis Galton is known for his pioneering studies of human intelligence. He devoted the latter part of his life to eugenics, i.e. improving the physical and mental makeup of the human species by selected parenthood. Galton's parents, both from important Quaker families, might have served as excellent examples of his ideas on hereditary genius. His mother, Frances Anne Violetta Darwin, was the daughter of the physician Erasmus Darwin, the author of Zoonomia or the Laws of Organic Life, in which he set out his ideas of evolution. Charles Darwin was also a grandson of Erasmus Darwin. Galton's father, Samuel Tertius Galton, was a banker from a family which contained many rich bankers and gunsmiths. Francis was youngest of his parents seven children having three older brothers and three older sisters. Francis attended a number of small schools in the Birmingham area before entering King Edward's School in Birmingham in 1836. He spent two years at this school but did not find the emphasis on classics and religion to his liking. Since his parents had decided that he should follow a medical career, he was an apprentice to several different medical men in Birmingham for around a year. Following this he went to London where he studied medicine at King's College for one year. Then, in 1840, he made a quick tour of the Continent visiting Giessen, Vienna, Constanza, Constantinople, Smyrna, and Athens. It was at this stage that, in his own words, (see [6]):-

Francis Galton British statistician and the well-known (notorious) founder of Eugenics. His interests in heredity and statistics led him to discoveries in statistics on the one hand, and to the dangerous idea of "improving" mankind on the other. It must be remembered, however, that eugenic ideas became a national policy in many countries and supported by many respectable persons, not only in Hitler's Germany, the worst example; and these ideas are still at issue in the contemorary world, overtly (in some countries) or covertly (in many other countries). In the 1870s, Galton discovered, by means of the mechanical device called "quincunx" that a mixture of normal distributions is itself a normal distribution. Following this, by experiments on sweetpeas and investigations on human heights, he discovered the notions of regression and statistical correlation. He founded the school of biometry, and had a great impact on the development of statistics, as well as on the discipline of genetics. (For more on Galton, see

Galton, Francis
English scientist, inventor, and explorer who studied the inheritance of physical and mental attributes with the aim of improving the human species. He was the first to use twins to try to assess the influence of environment on development, and is considered the founder of eugenics (a term he coined).
Galton believed that genius was inherited, and was principally to be found in the British; he also attempted to compile a map of human physical beauty in Britain. He invented the `silent' dog whistle, the weather map, a teletype printer, and forensic fingerprinting, and discovered the existence of anticyclones.
Galton was born in Birmingham and studied medicine in London as well as mathematics at Cambridge. In 1850 he set out for uncharted areas of Africa, and on his return wrote two books describing his explorations.
Galton designed several instruments to plot meteorological data, and made the first serious attempt to chart the weather over large areas - described in his book Meteorographica 1863. He also helped to establish the Meteorological Office and the National Physical Laboratory.
In Hereditary Genius 1869, based on a study of mental abilities in eminent families, Galton formulated the regression law, which states that parents who deviate from the average in a positive or negative direction have children who, on average, also deviate in the same direction but to a lesser extent.

Galton, Francis (1822-1911)
English statistician and meteorologist who, in a letter to the London Times , on August 6, 1892, proposed using a combination of mirrors to reflect sunlight toward Mars in order that it might be detected by any Martian astronomers with the aid of telescopes. This was similar to an earlier idea put forward by Cros in France. It stimulated a lively debate in England on (a) the likelihood of there being intelligent life on Mars and other neighboring worlds (including the Moon), and (b) the merits of trying to send signals. One of those who opposed the scheme was Richard Hutton. See communication, with the Moon and planets
