Encyclopedia Entry for Evariste Galois Dictionary Definition of Evariste Galois Evariste Galois October 25 May 31 ) was a French mathematician born in Bourg-la-Reine . While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals, thereby solving a long-standing problem. He died in a duel at the age of twenty. He was the first to use the word " group " as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations . His work on equation theory was submitted to the Academy and was reviewed by Simeon Denis Poisson , who did not understand it. It was resubmitted again in shorter form. The truth and importance of the work were not confirmed during his lifetime. His work laid the fundamental foundations for Galois theory , a major branch of abstract algebra and of pseudorandom sequence (PN) and error-correction coding applications. Galois was a staunch Republican, famous for having toasted Louis-Philippe with a dagger above his cup, which leads some to believe that his death in a duel was set-up by the secret police. The night before the duel, supposedly fought in order to defend the honor of a woman, he was so convinced of his impending death that he stayed up all night writing letters to his Republican friends and composing what would become his mathematical testament. In his final papers he outlined the rough edges of some work he had been doing in analysis and annotated a copy of the manuscript submitted to the academy. On the 30th of May 1832, early in the morning, he was shot in the abdomen and died the following day at ten in the Cochin hospital (probably of

Brilliance in a Short and Tragic Life variste Galois was born in the village of Bourg-la-Reine near Paris on October 25, 1811 to Nicholas Gabriel Galois and Adelaide Marie Galois Demante. Both of his parents were intelligent and well educated in philosophy, classical literature and religion. However, there is no indication of any special mathematical ability in any members of Galois' family. His mother was his sole teacher until he was 12 years old, teaching him subjects such as Greek, Latin and religion, where she imparted her own skepticism to her son. Galois' father was an influential member of the community and in 1815, he was elected mayor of the village. Galois enrolled at the Lycée of Louis-le-Grand in Paris as a boarding student in October, 1823. During 1824-25, his school record was good and he received several prizes. However in 1826, Galois was asked to repeat the year because his work in rhetoric was not up to the required standard. February, 1827, was a turning point in Galois' life. He enrolled in his first mathematics class, the class of M. Vernier. He quickly became absorbed in mathematics and his director of studies wrote:

Galois Evariste (français, 1811-1832) C'était un brillant étudiant mais son caractère tempétueux lui empêcha à deux reprises l'entrée à l'école polytechnique. A 16 ans, trop brillant sans doute, et sûrement un peu brouillon , il fût incompris par les mathématiciens de l'époque qui rejetèrent les travaux qu'il voulait présenter à l'académie des sciences. Ses idées républicaines l'on conduit en prison d'où il sortit malade quelques mois plus tard. Galois avait 20 ans quand il s'éprendra d'une femme pour laquelle il dût accepter une provocation en duel où il trouva la mort.
