Years later Terquem remarked, "A candidate of superior intelligence is lost with an examiner of inferior intelligence." However, Galois found a mathematics teacher, Louis Richard, and really started studying and doing mathematics. His first paper, on continued fractions, was published when he was 17. At 18, Galois reapplied to the Poly technique, and again the examination went badly. Finally, during the oral part of the exam, he lost patience with one of the examiners and threw the eraser at him. It was a hit, but Galois could never apply there again. At 19, Galois attended the university and wrote three original papers on the theory of algebraic equations. He submitted them to the Academy of Sciences for the competition in mathematics. The Secretary of the Academy took them home to read, but then died before writing a report about them and the papers were never found. Galois was understandably upset: "Genius is condemned by a malicious social organization to an eternal denial of justice in favor of fawning mediocrity." In 1830 the French masses revolted, and Galois was a staunch supporter. The director of the school locked the students in the school during the fighting and then expelled Galois for a public letter he wrote condemning the director. Galois tried to start his own school of mathematics, but got no students, so he joined the National Guard "If a carcass is needed to stir up the people, I will donate mine." Galois was jailed for supposedly threatening the King, but was found 'not guilty' by a jury. Finally he was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail for "illegally wearing a uniform."

Op 14 juli 1789 was de Parijse bevolking in opstand gekomen tegen het bewind van koning Lodewijk XVI en tegen de macht van de adel en de geestelijkheid. De opstand, die bekend geworden is onder de naam `Franse Revolutie', sloeg over naar andere delen van Frankrijk. Lodewijk werd afgezet en op 21 januari 1793 onthoofd. Na enkele rumoerige jaren kwam in 1800 de generaal Napoleon Bonaparte aan de macht. Napoleon werd meteen de machtigste man van Europa, want in de jaren na de Revolutie had Frankrijk veel omliggende landen veroverd. In 1804 liet Napoleon zich tot keizer kronen. Napoleon ging echter ten onder aan zijn eigen veroveringszucht. Na enkele nederlagen, onder andere in Rusland en bij Leipzig, werd Frankrijk in 1814 binnengevallen door enkele van haar tegenstanders. De oude machthebbers werden weer in het zadel geholpen en Napoleon werd naar Elba, een eiland voor de Italiaanse kust, verbannen. In 1815 wist hij echter te ontsnappen en nam de macht over Frankrijk weer over. Na precies honderd dagen werd hij echter tijdens de Slag bij Waterloo definitief verslagen en verbannen naar St. Helena, een eiland in de zuidelijke Atlantische Oceaan, alwaar hij in 1821 zou overlijden.

Seu primeiro trabalho importante, quando ele tinha cerca de 18 anos, foi encaminhado por Cauchy à Academia Francesa, para concorrer a um prestigioso prêmio. O manuscrito foi parar nas mãos de Fourier, que era o secretário da Academia, e o grande Jean Baptiste achou de falecer logo depois de receber os papéis. Resultado: o artigo se perdeu e nunca foi considerado para o prêmio. Passar a noite produzindo matemática não é indicado para quem vai duelar bem cedo na manhã seguinte. Galois foi ferido no duelo e morreu no dia seguinte, com menos de 21 anos de idade. Sobre esse duelo, pouco se sabe. Não se sabe nem a razão. Houve quem dissesse que a briga foi em torno de Stephanie mas isso pode ser palpite de quem gosta de romantizar as coisas. Houve quem visse uma conspiração política. O fato é que Galois estava de saco cheio com a vida. Rejeitado no amor, sem grana no bolso, perseguido pelo governo e sem uma aceitação clara de seus trabalhos pela comunidade matemática, é até provável que o duelo tenha sido uma espécie de suicídio premeditado. De qualquer modo, ninguém, depois que ele morreu, pôs em dúvida a enorme importância da pesquisa e dos resultados que ele alcançou. Galois foi o primeiro cara a entender direitinho a nascente teoria dos grupos finitos. Ele usou muito bem essa teoria para mostrar quais são as condições para se obter soluções para equações polinomiais por radicais. Anos depois, a teoria de grupos, que por muito tempo foi objeto de estudo apenas de matemáticos puros, começou a ter aplicações na solução de problemas físicos. E, como costuma acontecer, os físicos deram novos impulsos à teoria que teve Galois como um dos pioneiros.

While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals, thereby solving a long-standing problem. He died in a duel at the age of twenty. He was the first to use the word " group " as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations . His work on equation theory was submitted to the Academy and was reviewed by Simeon Denis Poisson , who did not understand it. It was resubmitted again in shorter form. The truth and importance of the work were not confirmed during his lifetime. His work laid the fundamental foundations for Galois theory , a major branch of abstract algebra and of pseudorandom sequence (PN) and error-correction coding applications.
