Galois, Evariste Galois, Evariste (Bourg-la-Reine 1811 - Parigi 1832), matematico francese noto per aver elaborato la teoria dei gruppi. Mentre era ancora studente, presentò all'Accademia delle Scienze alcuni saggi sulle frazioni continue e sugli insiemi numerici che, giudicati incomprensibili, non vennero tenuti in considerazione. Per due volte gli venne rifiutata l'ammissione all'Ecole Polytechnique, il più importante istituto di matematica francese; fu tuttavia ammesso all'Ecole Normale. Si dedicò all'attivismo politico e nel 1831 venne arrestato per le sue idee palesemente repubblicane ed espulso dall'Ecole Normale. Poco prima della morte, avvenuta a soli ventun anni, Galois stese di getto alcune delle sue teorie algebriche, e la pubblicazione postuma dei suoi manoscritti (1846 e 1870) gli valse la fama di matematico geniale. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. E variste Galois was the father of modern algebra. He was born in France in 1811, and he died of gunshot wounds 20 years and seven months later still a minor when his brief, turbulent life ended. He began his career in mathematics by failing the entry exam for the Ecole Polytechnique twice because his answers were so odd. He was accepted into the Ecole Normale, only to be expelled when he attacked the director in a letter to the papers. A few months later, he was arrested for making a threatening speech against the king. He was acquitted, but then he was tossed right back into jail when he illegally wore a uniform and carried weapons. He spent the next eight months writing mathematics. But then, as soon as he got out, he was devastated by an unhappy love affair. I guess it'd be fair to say he was a typical bright young teenager. For some murky reason maybe underhanded police work he was challenged to a duel on May 30th, 1832 a duel he couldn't win but which he couldn't dodge, either. By then his talents as a mathematician were known. He'd published some material, and luminaries like Gauss, Jacobi, and Cauchy knew of him.

Évariste Galois est né le 25 octobre 1811 à Bourg-La-Reine, non loin de Paris. Son père, Nicolas Gabriel Galois, tenait un pensionnat de jeunes gens fondé avant la révolution et exerçait la fonction de maire dans son village. Sa mère, Adélaïde Marie Demante, fille d'un magistrat, était profondément imprégnée de culture antique. Instruit par sa mère, Évariste fut aimable et heureux enfant. Il quitta la maison paternelle en 1823, à l'âge de douze ans, pour rentrer en quatrième au collège Louis Le Grand , à l'époque collège royal, comme interne. Parmi les élèves de ce collège régnait un esprit intensément républicain par lequel Galois se laissa gagner entièrement sans toutefois que cela nuisit à son application. Deux ans plus tard, cependant, tandis qu'il était en seconde, il manifesta de la lassitude pour le travail scolaire: les succès d'écolier ne le tentèrent pas. Ses maîtres de plaignirent de lui. Il devint alors un élève très irrégulier connaissant sa leçon à la perfection ou bien l'ignorant totalement si celle-ci lui déplaisait. Evariste GALOIS Evariste Galois (Bourg-la-Reine 1811 - Paris 1832) Mathématicien français. Entré en 1830 à l'École Normale, exclu en 1831 pour ses opinions politiques, il meurt en duel à l'âge de 20 ans pour une "infâme coquette". Son oeuvre géniale ne fut appréciée qu'après sa mort. La nuit qui précéda son duel, il résuma à grands traits, dans sa lettre à Auguste Chevalier, sa théorie des équations algébriques, ainsi que des résultats sur les intégrales abéliennes ... Ses travaux sont à la base de la notion de groupe. Quelques résultats obtenus par GALOIS : Il a prouvé l'impossibilité de résoudre par radicaux (c'est-à-dire à l'aide des 4 opérations et de l'extraction de racines) les équations de degré supérieur ou égal à 5. Il a inventé la notion de groupes distingués, de groupes résolubles et a développé toute une partie de la théorie des groupes afin de résoudre le problème des équations. Aujourd'hui, la "Théorie de Galois" constitue un des chapitres fondamentaux de l'algèbre.
