Evariste Galois
Methods for solving quadratic equation were known to many ancient peoples, including the Babylonian, Chinese and Hindu civilizations. Whether or not they had the quadratic formula, they had the main principle (completion of the square). After much struggle, Scipio del Ferro (1465 1526) found a formula for solutions of the cubic equation. His work was never published and was communicated to a few friends. Nonetheless, the fact that he had solved the problem became known, and Tartaglia (1500 1557) rediscovered the formula in 1535. He too kept his result secret but was tricked into revealing it by Cardano (1501 1576). Cardano also discovered a formula for the quartic equation. For 350 years no further progress was made. Finally Evariste Galois (1811 1832) showed that there is no algebraic formula for solving equations of degree five or more. Galois' work relies on the theory of groups. Note that there are, of course, ways of finding

Evariste Galois
Evariste Galois October 25 May 31 ) was a French mathematician born in Bourg-la-Reine . He was a mathematical child prodigy . While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals, thereby solving a long-standing problem. He died in a duel at the age of twenty. In he attempted the entrance exam to École Polytechnique but failed. The legend holds that he thought the exercise proposed to him by the examiner to be of no interest, and, in exasperation, he threw the rag used to clean up chalk marks on the blackboard at the examiner's head. He was the first to use the word " group " as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations . His work on equation theory was submitted to the Academy and was reviewed by Simeon Denis Poisson , who did not understand it. It was resubmitted again in shorter form. The truth and importance of the work were not confirmed during his lifetime. His work laid the fundamental foundations for Galois theory , a major branch of abstract algebra Galois was a staunch Republican , famous for having toasted Louis-Philippe with a dagger above his cup, which leads some to believe that his death in a duel was set up by the secret police.

Evariste Galois, a Frenchman, b. Oct. 25, 1811, d. May 31, 1832, made significant contributions to several branches of mathematics, including algebra, number theory, and group theory. In 1829 he published his first paper on continued fractions, followed by a paper that dealt with the impossibility of solving the general quintic (fifth-degree) EQUATION by algebraic means alone. This led to Galois theory, a branch of mathematics dealing with the general solution of equations. Galois was killed in a duel. Author: Arthur Schlissel

Genius and Biographers: The Fictionalization of Evariste Galois
1. Introduction
In Paris, on the obscure morning of May 30, 1832, near a pond not far from the pension Sieur Faultrier, Evariste Galois confronted an adversary in a duel to be fought with pistols, and was shot through the stomach. Hours later, lying wounded and alone, Galois was found by a passing peasant. He was taken to the Hospital Cochin where he died the following day in the arms of his brother Alfred, after having refused the services of a priest. Had Galois lived another five months, until October 25, he would have attained the age of twenty-one. The legend of Evariste Galois, one of the creators of group theory, has fired the imagination of generations of mathematics students. Many of us have experienced the excitement of Freeman Dyson who writes: In those days, my head was full of the romantic prose of E.T. Bell's Men of Mathematics , a collection of biographies of the great mathematicians. This is a splendid book for a young boy to read (unfortunately, there is not much in it to inspire a girl, with Sonya Kovalevsky allotted only half a chapter), and it has awakened many people of my generation to the beauties of mathematics. The most memorable chapter is called "Genius and Stupidity" and describes the life and death of the French mathematician Galois, who was killed in a duel at the age of twenty.[1] Dyson goes on to quote Bell's famous description of Galois's last night before the duel:
All night long he had spent the fleeting hours feverishly dashing off his scientific last will and testament, writing against time to glean a few of the great things in his teeming mind before the death he saw could overtake him. Time after time he broke off to scribble in the margin "I have not time; I have not time," and passed on to the next frantically scrawled outline. What he wrote in those last desperate hours before the dawn will keep generations of mathematicians busy for hundreds of years. He had found, once and for all, the true solution of a riddle which had tormented mathematicians for centuries: underwhat conditions can an equation be solved?[2]

EVARISTE GALOIS by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1475. Today, let's tell the remarkable tale of Evariste Galois. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. E variste Galois was the father of modern algebra. He was born in France in 1811, and died of gunshot wounds twenty years and seven months later. He was still a minor when his brief, turbulent life ended. Galois began his career in math by failing the École Polytechnique's entry exam twice because his answers were so odd. He was accepted into the École Normale , only to be expelled when he attacked the director in a letter to the papers. A few months later, he was arrested for making a threatening speech against the king. He was acquitted, but then he was right back into jail after he illegally wore a uniform and carried weapons. He spent the next nine months writing mathematics. Then, as soon as he got out, he was devastated by an unhappy love affair. I guess it'd be fair to say he was typical bright young teenager. Still, his talents as a mathematician were known. He did publish some material, and luminaries like Gauss, Jacobi, Fourier, and Cauchy all knew of him. For some murky reason - most likely underhanded police work - he was challenged to a duel on May 30th, 1832. It was a duel he couldn't win but which he couldn't dodge, either. On May 29th, he wrote and wrote. That day and night he gathered the hundred or so pages of mathematics he'd produced during his short life. He wrote a long cover letter organizing explaining and expanding upon the work. Then and there, he set down what proved to be the very foundations of modern algebra and group theory. Some of the theorems in that package weren't proved for a century. He faced death with a cool desperation, reaching down inside himself and getting at truths we do not know how he found.

Evariste Galois ' father Nicholas Gabriel Galois and his mother Adelaide Marie Demante were both intelligent and well educated in philosophy, classical literature and religion. However there is no sign of any mathematical ability in any of Galois' family. His mother served as Galois' sole teacher until he was 12 years old. She taught him Greek, Latin and religion where she imparted her own scepticism to her son. Galois' father was an important man in the community and in 1815 he was elected mayor of Bourg-la-Reine. You can see a map of Paris in the 19 th Century, showing Bourg-la-Reine. The starting point of the historical events which were to play a major role in Galois' life is surely the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. From this point the monarchy of Louis 16 th was in major difficulties as the majority of Frenchmen composed their differences and united behind an attempt to destroy the privileged establishment of the church and the state.

French mathematician who developed new techniques to study the solubility of equations which are now called group theory Simultaneously with Abel , he showed that the general quintic equation and polynomial equations of higher degree are not soluble in terms of a finite number of rational operations and root extractions. Galois's life was a tragic one. His father committed suicide. Galois himself regularly failed his exams in school while he concentrated on reading Legendre's Geometry cover to cover. In his examination to the Preparatory School in 1830, the physics teacher Péclet wrote of the young genius "He knows absolutely nothing. I have been told that this student has mathematical ability; this certainly astonishes me. Judging by his examination, he seems of little intelligence, or has hidden his intelligence so well that I found it impossible to detect it" (Infeld 1948, pp. 101-102). Galois also failed to gain admittance to the École Polytechnique not once, but two times. During the first of these examinations, in 1829, Galois was so frustrated by the inane questions that he vented his anger by throwing an eraser at his examiner M. Dinet (Infeld 1948, pp. 99-100). Galois suffered the additional misfortune of having his work not only ignored, but completely misplaced by its caretakers on several occasions. When Galois gave

GALOIS, EVARISTE (1811-1832), French mathematician, was born on the 25th of October 1811, and killed in a duel on the 3ist of May 1832. An obituary notice by his friend Auguste Chevalier appeared in the Revue encyclopedique (1832); and his collected works are published, Journal de Liouville (1846), pp. 381-444, about fifty of t~hese pages being occupied by researches on the resolubility of algebraic equations by radicals. This branch of algebra he notably enriched, and to him is also due the notion ,of a group of substitutions (see EQUATION: Theory of Equations; also GROUPS, THEORY or). His collected works, with an introduction by C. F. Picard, were published in 1897 at Paris. FRANZ JOSEPH GALL GALSTON
