Galileo Galilei
Wow! Galileo discovered four of Jupiter's moons almost four hundred years ago. Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist and astronomer . He was born in Pisa on February 15, 1564. Galileo's father, Vincenzo Galilei, was a well-known musician. Vincenzo decided that his son should become a doctor. In 1581, Galileo was sent to the University of Pisa to study medicine. While a student at the university, Galileo discovered that he had a talent for mathematics. He was able to persuade his father to allow him to leave the university to become a tutor in mathematics. He later became a professor of mathematics. In 1609, Galileo heard about the invention of the spyglass, a device which made distant objects appear closer. Galileo used his mathematics knowledge and technical skills to improve upon the spyglass and build a telescope . Later that same year, he became the first person to look at the Moon through a telescope and make his first astronomy discovery. He found that the Moon was not smooth, but mountainous and pitted - just like the Earth! He subsequently used his newly invented telescope to discover four of the moons circling Jupiter, to study Saturn, to observe the phases of Venus, and to study sunspots on the Sun.

Galileo Galilei (Feb. 15, 1564-Jan. 8, 1642) was an Italian mathematician, astronomer , and physicist. Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy, to a noble family, and studied at the University of Pisa (1581-1585). While in the University, Galileo did extensive experimentation with pendulums, finding that they nearly return to the height at which they were released, that different pendulums have different periods (independent of bob weight and amplitude), and that the square of the period varies directly with the pendulum's length (and it does not not depend on the arc of the swing). He later used pendulums to make a clock (1641). Galileo also found that the speed at which bodies fall does not depend on their weight. He documented these discoveries in his book called, "De Motu" (meaning "On Motion"). Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Padua (1592-1610). In 1593, Galileo invented the

Galileo Galilei
Galileo was one of the greatest astronomers in the world. He changed the way we think about the universe. Galileo was the first person to use a telescope to look at the universe. He studied the sun, the planets, and the moon. Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy, on February 15, 1564. Did you know Galileo was born in the same year as William Shakespeare? It is also the same year in which Michelangelo died. When Galileo was born, Italy was not called Italy. Instead, Italy was made up of independent city-states. The city-states were in regions controlled by powerful families. Pisa was located in the Tuscany region and controlled by the Medici family.

the Laws of Dynamics
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was a pivotal figure in the development of modern astronomy, both because of his contributions directly to astronomy, and because of his work in physics and its relation to astronomy. He provided the crucial observations that proved the Copernican hypothesis, and also laid the foundations for a correct understanding of how objects moved on the surface of the earth (dynamics) and of gravity. Newton , who was born the same year that Galileo died, would build on Galileo's ideas to demonstrate that the laws of motion in the heavens and the laws of motion on the earth were one and the same. Thus, Galileo began and Newton completed a synthesis of astronomy and physics in which the former was recognized as but a particular example of the latter, and that would banish the notions of Aristotle almost completely from both. One could, with considerable justification, view Galileo as the father both of modern astronomy and of modern physics.
The Telescope
Galileo did not invent the telescope ( Dutch spectacle makers receive that credit), but he was the first to use the telescope to study the heavens systematically. His

GALILEO: AN OVERVIEW It was when the cause of explaining the movement of the heavens came into the hands of Galileo Galilei that the heliocentric theory of the universe finally became the revolutionary bombshell that rocked the medieval worldview. It was in the early 1600s that the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei made his dramatic announcement. He claimed that from his direct observations of the stars, it was clear to him that Copernicus' theory was not just a matter of intellectual convenience, but was in fact also the Truth . Indeed, the sunnot the earthwas the center of things. His impact did not stop there. Galileo had been armed with a new-fangled instrument we know as a telescope (even claiming its inventionthough it seems he fudged a bit on this truth). With this telescope he was able to make many unprecedented observations of the heavens beyond even the all-important fact of the earth's loss of central position in the scheme of things. He observed the pock-marked surface of the moon and the solar flares of the sundiscounting the ancient Greek religious doctrine that these heavenly bodies were the epitome of perfection (actual Platonic Ideals or Forms). He also observed the moons of Jupiter in their regular orbit as together they all moved about the sungiving rise to an explanation of how our moon could be similarly held in orbit around the earth as it makes its way around the sun.

GALILEO GALILEI

Galileo (1564-1642) was the first astronomer to make full use of the telescope, observing the craters of the moon and the satellites of Jupiter. His open advocacy of Copernican cosmology led, however, to a clash with the Catholic Counter-Reformation, and he spent his final years under house arrest. Galileo Galilei was born in 1564 at Pisa. Galileo began his studies in medicine at the University of Pisa, but soon dropped out, preferring to study mathematics with Ostilio Ricci. In 1592 he obtained the chair of mathematics at Padua, and began working on the inclined plane and the pendulum. By 1598, Galileo believed in the truth of the Copernican theory , as he wrote to Kepler . Around 1604, he began working on astronomy in order to lecture on the new star that had appeared that year.
