Today over 300,000 domes dot the globe. Plastic and fiberglass "radomes" house delicate radar equipment along the Arctic perimeter, and “radome” weather stations withstand winds up to 180 mph. Corrugated metal domes have given shelter to families in Africa, at a cost of $350 per dome. The U.S. Marine Corps hailed the geodesic dome as "the first basic improvement in mobile military shelter in 2,600 years." The world’s largest aluminum clear-span structure is a geodesic dome which houses the “ Spruce Goose Fuller was one of the earliest proponents of renewable energy sources–solar (including wind and wave)–which he incorporated into his designs. He claimed, "there is no energy crisis, only a crisis of ignorance." His research demonstrated that humanity could satisfy 100% of its energy needs while phasing out fossil fuels and atomic energy. For example, he showed that a wind generator fitted to every high-voltage transmission tower in the U.S. would generate three-and-a-half times the country’s total recent power output. R. Buckminster Fuller
"For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. Only ten years agao the 'more with less' technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option of becoming enduringly successful." - Buckminster Fuller, 1980. R. Buckminster Fuller, known by his friends as "Bucky", has undeniably been one of the key innovators in the 20th century. He is known as a philosopher, thinker, visionary, inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet, cosmologist, and more. Buckminster Fuller was probably one of the first futurists and global thinkers. He is the one who coined the term "Spaceship Earth", and his work has inspired and paved the way for many who came after him. This is the Dymaxion Map of the world, developed by Fuller as the first world projection to show the continents on a flat surface without visible distortion. Furthermore, this view shows the earth as being essentially one island in one ocean. Bucky was the person most responsible for making Synergy a common term. Much of his work was about exploring and creating synergy. He found synergy to be a basic principle of all interactive systems. He developed a subject called Synergetics, a "Geometry of Thinking".

Richard Buckminster Fuller: the planet's friendly genius. A scientist, philosopher. Bucky has gained renown as an inventor and designer (of the Dymaxion house, car and map), the creator of the geodesic dome , the man who coined the term "Spaceship Earth" and organized the World Game, the mathematician who discovered Synergetics, and as a dogged individualist whose genius has been felt throughout the world. He made his mark in areas of architecture, mathematics, philosophy, religion, urban development and design, naturalism, physics, numerology, art and literature, industry and technology.

First there is scientific discovery of a generalized principle, which occur as a subjective realizatin by an experimentally probin individual. Next comes objective employment of that principle in a special case invention. Next the invention is reduced to practice. This gives humanity an increased technical advantage over the physical environment. If successful as a tool of society, the invention is used in bigger, swifter, and everyday ways. For instance, it goes progressively from a little steel steamship to ever-bigger fleets of constantly swifter, higher-powered ocean giants."

Notes to R. Buckminster Fuller's Work
R. Buckminster Fuller once wrote "Don't try to make me consistent. I am learning all the time." Admittedly, I am trying to make Fuller consistent. I have been studying Fuller's work for several years and I am now in the process of making my notes available through these web pages. I hope that by working together we can go through Fuller's work and pull together a consistent presentation of his ideas. Being a physics and mathematics oriented person, I have concentrated on Fuller's science and mathematics related work. Even if your not science oriented I hope you'll find these pages interesting.

... Elephant Nose Fish Welcome to the Camp Nose Fish 2004 home page. Our camp's theme is "less is more." The camp has two main projects:
  • The Desert Nose will return for its fourth year, providing interactive cooling during the hot part of the day
  • The Fishmobile will be redecorated inside with blacklight-sensitive artwork to suit this year's Burning Man theme. This year it will have the stage name "Starfishmobile." ;-) It will be parked in our camp and possibly as an art installation near the esplanade.
We are going to apply for the 3:00 Plaza in the hopes we can be near our friends at Bad Idea Theatre, The Whistleworks, and The Tea House, but there is no guarantee that we will be placed there. In 2003 the 3:00 plaza had a delightful and helpful camaraderie among the camps that we'd like to be a part of again in 2004. In supporting each other during the event we discovered our camp's could all do more for BRC. Our camp will have a new windocloth shade area this year suspended from our camp's domes. We'll be able to eat and get out of the heat there! The nose is always packed.

    Synergetics
In its broadest sense synergetics is Fuller's hypothesized coordinate system of Universe - both in its physical and metaphysical aspects. Fuller's system of epistemography and mathematical-physics attempts to disclose how Nature actually operates - her ``operational mathematics.'' Fuller claimed that synergetics could be understood by children (though they probably couldn't comprehend his books on the subject). He published this material in his essay ``Omni-directional Halo'' (in No More Secondhand God Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking Synergetics 2: Further Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking , and Cosmography Cosmography is probably the easiest to read for people unfamiliar with Fuller's prose style. An ``interleaved'' version of Synergetics and Synergetics 2 is available on the Web at http://www.rwgrayprojects.com/synergetics/synergetics.html From my own study of synergetics, I'm convinced that Bucky did in fact identify the coordinate system used by Nature. But I would add the caveat that he didn't get too far along in developing it. Fuller points to what the coordinate system is in broad strokes. He gives many penetrating insights and new discoveries, but the synergetics coordinate system needs a lot more development (and integration) before it will be possible to use it as the operative model in all of Science. Tip to students of synergetics: Build models.

"Making the world's available resources serve one hundred percent of an exploding population can only be accomplished by a boldly accelerated design revolution." T here are few men who can justly claim to have revolutionized their discipline. R. Buckminster Fuller revolutionized many. "Bucky," as he was known to most, was a designer, architect, poet, educator, engineer, philosopher, environmentalist, and, above all, humanitarian. Driven by the belief that humanity's major problems were hunger and homelessness he dedicated his life to solving those problems through inexpensive and efficient design. Black Mountain College . There, with the support of an amazing group of professors and students, he began work on the project that was to make him famous and revolutionize the field of engineering. Using lightweight plastics in the simple form of a tetrahedron (a triangular pyramid) he created a small dome. As his work continued it became clear that he had made the first building that could sustain its own weight with no practical limits. The U.S. government recognized the importance of the discovery and employed him to make small domes for the army. Within a few years there were thousands of these domes around the world. Having finally received recognition for his endeavors, Buckminster Fuller spent the final fifteen years of his life traveling around the world lecturing on ways to better use the world's resources. A favorite of the radical youth of the late 60's and 70's, Fuller worked to expand social activism to an international scope. Among his most famous books were NO MORE SECONDHAND GOD(1963) OPERATING MANUAL FOR THE SPACESHIP EARTH (1969), and EARTH, INC. (1973) in which he writes "In reality, the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are nothing else than a most fantastically well-designed and space-programmed team of vehicles. All of us are, always have been, and so long as we exist, always will benothing else butastronauts."
