Georg Frobenius Back at the University of Berlin he attended lectures by Kronecker Kummer and Weierstrass . He continued to study there for his doctorate, attending the seminars of Kummer and Weierstrass , and he received his doctorate (awarded with distinction) in 1870 supervised by Weierstrass . In 1874, after having taught at secondary school level first at the Joachimsthal Gymnasium then at the Sophienrealschule, he was appointed to the University of Berlin as an extraordinary professor of mathematics. For the description of Frobenius's career so far, the attentive reader may have noticed that no mention has been made of him receiving his habilitation before being appointed to a teaching position. This is not an omission, rather it is surprising given the strictness of the German system that this was allowed. Details of this appointment are given in [3] but we should say that it must ultimately have been made possible due to strong support from Weierstrass who was extremely influential and considered Frobenius one of his most gifted students.

Frobenius, Georg Ferdinand German mathematician who formulated the concept of the abstract group - the first abstract structure of 'new' mathematics. His research into the theory of groups and complex number systems would prove useful to the development of quantum mechanics. He also made contributions to the theory of elliptic functions and to the solution of differential equations.

Weierstrass and Fuchs list 15 topics on which Frobenius had made major contributions during these years: the development of analytic functions in series, the algebraic solution of equations whose coefficients are rational functions of one variable, the theory of linear differential equations, Pfaff's problem, linear forms with integer coefficients, linear substitutions and bilinear forms, adjoint linear differential operators, the theory of elliptic and Jacobi functions, the relations among the 28 double tangents to a plane of degree 4, Sylow's theorem, double cosets arising from two finite groups, Jacobi's covariants, Jacobi functions in three variables, the theory of biquadratic forms, and the theory of surfaces with a differential parameter. In his work in group theory, Frobenius combined results from the theory of algebraic equations, geometry, and number theory, which led him to the study of abstract groups. He published a paper in 1879, which looks at permutable elements in groups. This paper also gives a proof of the structure theorem for finitely generated abelian groups. In 1884, he published his next paper on finite groups in which he proved Sylow's theorems for abstract groups . The proof which Frobenius gives is the one still used today in most undergraduate courses. Then Frobenius filled the chair at the University of Berlin that became vacant when Kronecker died. He did great work there, but he did not get along with his colleagues. He was known for giving fast-paced, varied, and deep lectures that were not terribly stimulating.

Ferdinand Georg Frobenius
Ferdinand Georg Frobenius (1849-1917) was a German mathematician, best-known for his contributions to the theory of differential equations and to group theory Frobenius was born in Charlottenburg , a suburb of Berlin , and was educated at the University of Berlin . His thesis was on the solution of differential equations, under the direction of Weierstrass . After its completion in 1870, he taught in Berlin for a few years before receiving an appointment at the Polytechnicum in Zurich (now ETH Zurich ). In 1893 he returned to Berlin, and was also elected to the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
Contributions to Group Theory
Group Theory was one of Frobenius' principal interests in the second half of his career. One of his first notable contributions was the proof of the Sylow theorems for abstract groups. Earlier proofs had been for permutation groups. His proof of the first Sylow theorem (on the existence of Sylow groups) is the one still used today. More important was his creation of the theory of group characters and group representations, which are fundamental tools for studying the structure of groups. This work led to the establishment of the Frobenius reprocity law and the definition of what are now called Frobenius groups.
