Kurt Friedrichs solved a problem in relativity while still at school. His dissertation on the theory of elastic plates was written under Courant Courant 's assistant and helped with the Courant Hilbert book. Friedrichs went to Aachen in 1929 and became professor in Braunschweig in 1932. His main work was on partial differential equations in mathematical physics. He used finite differences to prove existence of solutions. Friedrichs also worked on fluid dynamics. His girlfriend was Jewish so from 1933 he experienced problems. He went to the USA in 1937 to join Courant who had emigrated earlier, and was joined by his girlfriend whom he married. THIS MEMORIAL OF KURT Otto Friedrichs is given in two parts. The first is about his life and its relation to his mathematics. The second part is about his work, which spanned a very great variety of innovative topics where the innovator was Friedrichs. PART I: LIFE Those first three papers demonstrate most of Friedrichs's lifetime in mathematicsthe first on the fundamental laws of the nature of matter, the second on applied mathematics viewed through analysis, and the third on basic theorems of wave propagation. The paper on hyperbolic partial differential equations led naturally to what turned out to be one of the best-known and most used results of mathematics of the time (1928,2). In investigating whether difference schemes for a time-varying partial differential equation like the wave or heat equation yield a good approximate solution, Courant, Friedrichs, and Lewy were led to consider the stability of the difference scheme. In a simple difference scheme every partial derivative like f/ x is replaced by a difference of the approximating function at two values of x divided by the difference of "step" in the values of x . The three authors made the remarkable discovery that the steps in time could not be chosen arbitrarily but had to be smaller than some constant times the steps in the space variable. For the wave equation that constant was the reciprocal of the speed of propagation. For other equations there may be many such speeds or one may have a different kind of propagation, but there is always a limitation of space step (

of the hypotenuse if the lengths of the hypotenuse if the lengths of the other sides are given" (friedrichs 5). 1991. friedrichs, kurt O. From Pythagoras to Einstein
http://www.sienahts.edu/~kabdo/triples.htm
Home About Me Mathematics Pythagorean Triples By: Kelly Abdo The theorem that is credited to Pythagoras concerns itself with the sides of a right triangle. The three sides of the triangle consist of two legs adjacent to the right angle, and of the hypotenuse opposite of that angle. "The Pythagorean theorem gives a relationship between the lengths of the three sides; it enables one to compute the length of the hypotenuse if the lengths of the hypotenuse if the lengths of the other sides are given" (Friedrichs 5). Morris “Three integers a, b, and c that satisfy a + b = c are called Pythagorean Triples. a = n – m , b = 2nm, c = n + m These three numbers a, b, and c, always form a Pythagorean Triple” (Bogomolny 1). The proof for this is fairly simple to follow: “(n – m = n m + m m = n m + m = (n + m ” (Bogomolny 2). For example: Let n = 4, and let m = 2 a = 4 b = 2(4*2) = 16 c = 4 Euclid and Diaphantus, to obtain Pythagorean triples with special properties, used this formula. Many people believe that the Pythagoreans, around the year 500 B.C.E, discovered the Pythagorean triples. However, an excavated clay tablet was found in 1945 to prove otherwise. This “Babylonian clay tablet, called the Plimpton 322, (pictured below) was deciphered by Neugebauer and Sachs” (Burton 68).
