Alexander Friedmann 's date of birth is often given as 29 June. However this is an error which came about in converting the "Old Style" Russian date to the "New Style" date, which requires an addition of 12 days. Rather strangely Friedmann wrongly converted his own date of birth to 17 June (it should have been 4 + 12 = 16). Then, not realising that the date he gave had already been converted, it was converted again (17 + 12 = 29). Friedmann's father was a ballet dancer and his mother was a pianist. However the parents divorced when Alexander was nine years old. Records show that the church sided with the father and Alexander stayed with his father who soon remarried. Alexander entered the Second St Petersburg Gymnasium in August 1897 and his record shows a quite ordinary school performance at first. Soon however Friedmann became one of the top two pupils in his class. The other outstanding pupil was Yakov Tamarkin, also an extraordinary mathematician, and the two boys were close friends, almost always together during their years at school and university.

Gerson Alexander was born in 1788 in Labiszyn, county of Bydgoszcz, near Poznan, Poland, that shortly after (until 1918) became Labischin, county of Schubin, near the City of Posen, Grand Dutchy of Posen. He was married to Zohre ? Alexander (1797-?), who was born in Graetz, county of Buk. He was naturalized a German citizen in Graetz, Posen (now Grodzisk, near Buk, Poland) on Sept. 11, 1834.

Alexander Friedmann
Russian-born physicist
who helped boost
the theory of an expanding universe
Alexander Friedmann (1888-1925) was a superb Russian-born mathematician who made an enormous contribution to the development of theories that the universe was expanding. Friedmann studied at Petersburg University and was awarded a master's degree in applied and pure mathematics in 1914. During World War I he worked as an advisor to the Russian Air Force. He also worked at an aviation machinery factory and soon rose to a managerial position. From 1918 to 1920 he taught theoretical mechanics at Perm University, while also researching at a science academy in St. Petersburg.
Proposed a dynamic model
that said the universe expanded with time
In 1922, Friedmann said that if one considered that the universe changed over time, Albert Einstein's theory of a limited volume universe was possible even if the universe did not remain a constant size. Soon after, he produced the same results for a universe of unlimited volume and proposed a model of a universe that would change over time. Einstein had proposed that the size of the universe was constant and it neither shrank nor grew. But Friedmann argued that space and time have tendencies to be isotropic (all points traveled in uniformity in all directions) and that it was possible for the average density and radius of the universe to change over time. The Big Bang theory developed from Friedmann's theory of an expanding universe.

Our universe can be described mathematically by a simple model developed in 1922 at Petrograd (St Petersburg) by Alexander Friedmann (1888–1925), who predicted that the whole universe would expand and evolve with time before there was any observational evidence. He was an outstanding Soviet physicist, and this vivid biography is set in a wide historical background. The book is a window on the school and university years, military service, teaching and research during a seminal period of Soviet history. The authors include unique archival material, such as Friedmann’s letters from the Front, as well as contemporary records and reminiscences of colleagues. There is a detailed treatment of his work in Theoretical Cosmology (1922–1924), set in the context of the organization of Soviet science at the time. Reviews ‘This biography of Alexander Friedmann was originally published in 1988. This is the first detailed biography of a scientist who made enormous contributions to the fields of hydrodynamics, meteorology and relativistic cosmology.’
