Hans Freudenthal was born into a Jewish family, a fact which would have unfortunate consequences for him during World War II. He was educated in Luckenwalde, the town of his birth, where he studied at the Gymnasium. Although he developed an interest in mathematics and science at this stage, he was also interested in literature and read widely from the classics of literature and poetry. In 1923 he entered the University of Berlin to study mathematics and physics. Two important events took place in 1927 which would influence the direction of his career. Brouwer lectured in Berlin in that year and the meeting between Freudenthal and Brouwer would lead to Freudenthal's career being entirely in The Netherlands. Also in 1927, Freudenthal spent the summer semester at the University of Paris broadening his already broad interests. At the University of Berlin his doctoral supervisor was Hopf and in 1931 Freudenthal was awarded his doctorate for a thesis on the theory of ends of groups By the time he was awarded his doctorate, Freudenthal was already in Amsterdam having been invited to go there in 1930 as

    Prof. Dr. Hans Freudenthal (1905 - 1990)
Hans Freudenthal was born in 1905 in the German town of Luckenwalde, the son of a Jewish teacher. Even at a young age he was interested in differential equations and integration, but by the age of 13 he had also read all the works of Goethe and Schiller. In 1923 he went to Berlin and Paris to study mathematics. After gaining his doctorate he moved to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where he became assistant to L.E.J. Brouwer, the famous mathematician, in 1930. Shortly after, he married Suus Lutter, who was a pedagogue. Thanks to his marriage to an Arian Dutch woman and a certain amount of luck, Freudenthal was able to survive the Second World War.
In 1946 Freudenthal became a professor in Utrecht, appointed to a chair in pure and applied mathematics and the principles of mathematics. In his time Freudenthal was an accomplished and well-known mathematician, and he made substantial contributions to topology, geometry and the theory of Lie groups. As a teacher he acquired international fame and significance as the founder of realistic mathematics education, which is based on problems taken from day-to-day experiences rather than on abstract math rules. Single-handedly Freudenthal saved Dutch education from the American teaching method of New Math, which was introduced in many countries from 1960 onwards. This formal, logic-based method turned out to be unsuitable for most students.

    Prof. Dr. Hans Freudenthal (1905 - 1990)
Brouwer in 1930 assisteerde.

It's a familiar problem. You've finally managed to contact that alien civilization. Things are going great. You feel like your world will never be the same, that whole new realms of possibilities are opening up before your eyes. Then, inevitably, a hint of strain starts to creep into your relationship. You find that you don't really have all that much in common. Heck, sometimes it feels like you're not even in the same galaxy. It's as if there is this vast gulf between you, making communication almost impossible. You're not even sure you'd understand each other no matter how physically close you become. What do you do? You design a language for cosmic intercourse. Hans Freudenthal made a start at one in his book, Lincos, published in 1960. I think it's time for version II, the all-new action-packed sequel guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat, which is a specific structure with a flat surface perpendicular to the pull of gravity, which is a thing that, oh never mind.

Freudenthal, Hans , wiskundige (Luckenwalde (Duitsland) 17-9- 1905 - Utrecht 13-10- 1990) .
