You know how women can be about their hair. I'm talking about the woman, that like Samson, feels her strength is in her hair. She approaches a salon like she's going to a lynching. She's a bundle of nerves the whole time she's in that chrome, leathered, oversized chair, watching every snip of the scissors in the mirror, and driving the haircutter crazy:
"Do you think that's too much?"
"Do you think that's too little?"
"Do you think it'll be OK?"
And then bursts into tears. Ok, that's me. And Philip, who has cut my hair for the past 20 years still likes me - and I, of course, adore him! :) Though I don't live in Connecticut anymore, when I go back to visit family, I also visit Philip. And he always treats me - and my hair - like we are the most important thing to him. He also has had this picture of me up on his walls for centuries. That's my first greyhound, Eliminator. We got a local paper to write about the plight of the greyhound in 1989. Philip offers a naturalproduct line . We got into one of our many philosophical discussions about life, and love, and how all things natural are the best.

CIA Case Officer in Latin America
Before Aldrich Hazen Ames was exposed as a high-ranking CIA official who betrayed the Agency and his country to the Soviets, the CIA claimed that it had never had a turncoat member. But the Agency's critics point to Philip Agee who has worked as a CIA Latin American case officer in the Agency in Mexico, a position he resigned in 1969 after twelve years of service. Agee said he was leaving the CIA for "personal reasons," but, after he left, he stated that he had rejected "my work in the CIA as a reaction against the corruption, ineffectiveness, and greed I found among the traditional political forces that we were supporting." Thereafter Agee became a dedicated CIA basher. He moved to Cuba where he was given a house and servants and where he wrote a book about his CIA career. Agee always insisted that the Cuban government did not bring any pressure to him to write a critical portrait of his former employer, but the CIA later insisted that Agee was by then a member of the Cuban secret service, the

No. 6 November, 1991 Arts and Play (II) by James B. Jordan Gambling The Bible nowhere condemns gambling, and so we need to be careful in our assessment of it. Let me begin by making a strong case against gambling. Then I will surprise most readers by pointing out that gambling may not always be sinful. The reader should bear in mind that in this section we are not discussing the wisdom of state-run lotteries and we are not discussing the sin-filled environment of casinos. We are only taking up the subject of betting and gambling in ordinary life. After the lust for glory and the lust for blood, the third things that wrecks the fun for non-Christians is gambling. Christian pastors and theologians have often (but not always) condemned it throughout all ages. The reason is simple: If a man really believes that God will judge all things, he will lose interest in gambling. Money is one of the most important things in life, because it is the means God has appointed for providing the necessities of life. Moreover, man is called to exercise responsible dominion over all the world, and so God will call each man to account for what he has done with his money and goods. God condemns the man who buries his money, and blesses the man who uses his money properly (Matthew 25:14-30). The Christian is careful with the money entrusted to his stewardship. Spending some money on fun and recreation is a good and necessary thing, as we have seen. Gambling, however, takes what is a serious thing and attempts to treat it as if it were nothing. Gambling is profligate waste. The man who gambles is affirming that he is not a steward, and that he will have to give no accounting for what he has done with his money. The fun of gambling is located precisely at the point where there is pleasure in wasting things. Buying an ice cream sundae may be a relative waste of money, but ice cream is enjoyable in itself. Gambling, however, is an absolute waste of money; the pleasure lies in the waste itself.

On the Death of Dr. Benjamin Franklin
Thus, some tall tree that long hath stood
The glory of its native wood,
By storms destroyed, or length of years,
Demands the tribute of our tears. The pile, that took long time to raise,
To dust returns by slow decays:
But, when its destined years are o'er,
We must regret the loss the more. So long accustomed to your aid,
    The world laments your exit made;
So long befriended by your art,
Philosopher, 'tis hard to part! When monarchs tumble to the ground,
Successors easily are found: But, matchless FRANKLIN! what a few Can hope to rival such as YOU, Who seized from kings their sceptered pride, And turned the lightning darts aside.

Franklin is the American Merlin. He is scientist, sage, and savant. This book is a collocation of his proverbs from "Poor Richard's Almanac." It reads like a typical quote book, but it goes deeper. Franklin has wisdom tempered with humor and a gift for coining gold phrases. I recommend it for any fan of Covey's "Seven Habits" or Allen's "As A Man Thinketh."
