Piero della Francesca, Raffaello e Tiziano dal 4 aprile Antonia Bonomi Le Marche riscoprono la dinastia dei Della Rovere con una grande mostra che si articola in quattro sedi corrispondenti a quattro sezioni tematiche. Il percorso ha inizio dal Palazzo Ducale di Senigallia, dove si scoprono le origini della dinastia, prosegue nel Palazzo Ducale di Urbino con la sezione dedicata alle opere d’arte eseguite da illustri artisti su commissione dei duchi. Nel Palazzo Ducale di Pesaro è ospitata la sezione delle ceramiche. Accanto ai capolavori degli artisti impegnati nelle decorazioni dei vari palazzi, come Dosso Dossi, sono esposte cento ceramiche prodotte nelle manifatture del ducato per essere vendute in tutta Europa. il Palazzo Ducale di Urbania ospita la sezione che illustra i rapporti dei Della Rovere con la scienza. La quarta sede, la Villa Imperiale a Pesaro, è visitabile su prenotazione ed è la sorpresa della mostra.

Scoperto alla Biblioteca Panizzi di Reggio Emilia un preziosissimo codice autografo di Piero della Francesca T ra i codici più preziosi conservati nelle antiche raccolte della Biblioteca Panizzi occupa senza dubbio un posto di assoluto rilievo il manoscritto quattrocentesco "De prospectiva pingendi" di Piero della Francesca, pervenuto alla Biblioteca stessa nel 1921 con l'acquisizione dell'archivio dello scienziato ed appassionato bibliofilo Giambattista Venturi (1746-1822). Nel trattato, composto presumibilmente tra il 1472 e il 1475, Piero della Francesca propone una serie di problemi di riduzione prospettica, dai più semplici ai più complessi, in modo da introdurre gradatamente alle tecniche della prospettiva con esercizi pratici. Posto il quesito, si passa alla costruzione della prospettiva con disegni geometrici ed illustrazioni. L'opera è la più nota ed importante tra quelle composte dal grande artista che scrisse anche un "Libellus de quinque corporibus regolaribus" ed un "Trattato d'abaco". Complessivamente si conoscono sette manoscritti quattro-cinquecenteschi che ci tramandano l'opera, sia nella versione in volgare che nella traduzione latina curata da Matteo di Pietro Anghiari e rivista dallo stesso Piero. Di questi solo tre sono riconosciuti come totalmente o parzialmente autografi: il codice conservato alla Biblioteca Palatina di Parma, quello dell'Ambrosiana di Milano e il codice reggiano, il quale, pur essendo stato segnalato dal Direttore della Biblioteca di Reggio, Bruno Fava, in un articolo apparso nel 1972, non è stato più studiato. La sua importanza storica ed il suo valore artistico emergeranno sicuramente a conclusione delle ricerche e degli studi che sta conducendo la commissione nazionale incaricata di curare l'edizione critica delle opere di Piero della Francesca.

The Geometry of Piero della Francesca by Mark A. Peterson is the cover article of the Summer 1997 issue of The Mathematical Intelligencer. The cover shows a detail of "The Flagellation of Christ" by Piero, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. In addition to his unassailable reputation as a painter, Piero has long been considered a kind of "mathematician," largely because Giorgio Vasari, writing in the mid 1500's, said he was. Until the 20th century, however, there was no firm evidence on this point. The belated discovery of three manuscript books by Piero changes the picture completely. It has taken almost another 100 years for people to begin to look at these books as serious works of mathematics. The article describes the kind of mathematics to be found in Piero's work. It is far beyond anything his contemporaries were doing, meaning that Piero was not just among the great painters of his century, he was without question the greatest mathematician of the 1400's. The article is available in preprint form as a gzipped Postscript file (5 figures + text).
