Flamsteed was ordained in 1671 but became interested in Astronomy when he was forced to postpone university due to ill health. He went on to get a degree at Jesus College Cambridge. Before his appointment at Greenwich his work in astronomy had included the observation of a solar eclipse in 1662 and determining solar parallax from observations of Mars. The Governmental Office of Ordinance provided money for the building and for salaries. The equipment came from donation and bought by Flamsteed himself. Flamsteed laboriously compiled detailed observations of star positions. His most famous achievement at the Observatory was to produce a 3000 star British Catalogue. In addition to this work he made observations of the made tables of the Sun's motion, measured the latitude of Greenwich, calculated the inclination of the ecliptic and the position of the equinoxes, created tables of atmospheric refraction, and tidal patterns, and devised a method of observing absolute Right Ascension.

http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/sow/starname.html
STAR NAMES
Proper Names The naked-eye stars carry a huge number of names that range from the intimately familiar to the hopelessly obscure, each one having a different reason for being. Vega , the fourth brightest star in the sky, has over 40 different names! Star names are either of ancient origin, of more recent historical origin, or are assigned by astronomical organizations under the umbrella of the International Astronomical Union (the organization of professional research astronomers). No private organizations have the rights to name stars.
The best-known and most-familiar names are "popular names," real names like those used for people. The oldest of all names, proper names are a mixed lot that descend from a variety of ancient (and even modern) languages that relate to the positions or the characters of the stars. Among the oldest are those from ancient Greek. Sirius , for example, means "searing" or "scorching," appropriate for the brightest star in the sky. Procyon comes from the Greek "pro kion," before the dog," as from the northern hemisphere it rises before the "Dog Star," Sirius; Castor honors one of the ancient Greek warrior twins;

born Aug. 19, 1646, Denby, near Derby, Derbyshire, England
died Dec. 31, 1719, Greenwich, London founder of the Greenwich Observatory, and the first astronomer royal of England. Royal Society . Ordained a clergyman in 1675, Flamsteed in 1684 received the income of the living of Burstow, Surrey. His report to the Royal Society on the need for a new observatory resulted in the founding (1675) of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, of which he was the first director (and hence astronomer royal). He found that he himself had to supply all the instruments at Greenwich, apart from a few gifts; he was forced to take private pupils to augment his income. A small inheritance from his father, who died in 1688, provided the means to construct a mural arc, a wall-mounted instrument for measuring the altitudes of stars as they passed the meridian. The latter part of Flamsteed's life passed in controversy over the publication of his excellent stellar observations. He struggled to withhold them until completed, but they were urgently needed by Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley, among others. Newton, through the Royal Society, led the movement for their immediate publication. In 1704 Prince George of Denmark undertook the cost of publication, and, despite the prince's death in 1708 and Flamsteed's objections, the incomplete observations were edited by Halley, and 400 copies were printed in 1712. Flamsteed later managed to burn 300 of them. His own star catalog, Historia Coelestis Britannica (1725), listed more stars (3,000) and gave their positions much more accurately than did any other previous work. Some stars, such as 61 Cygni, are still known by their numbers in his system.

he Reverend John Flamsteed (1646-1719)
Born in Derbyshire in 1646, John Flamsteed showed an early talent for practical astronomy, and his work in this field became known among scholars. One of his papers, sent to the President of the Royal Academy, brought him to the attention of Sir Isaac Newton, then Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. As a result, Flamsteed went to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he took a degree in 1674. Another patron was Sir Jonas Moore who procured for him the newly-created office of Astronomer Royal. The building of the Observatory was brought about by the need for a satisfactory method of finding the longitude of ships at sea. A project had been promulgated in London by a Frenchman, Le Sieur de St Pierre, but Flamsteed pointed out that it could not be carried out because, "The places of the fixed stars" were not accurately enough known. The King, Charles II, is said to have reacted with some vehemence, ordering that they should be "anew observed, examined and corrected for the use of his seamen". So the Observatory was built at Greenwich. The King gave a grant of £500, bricks from Tilbury Fort and wood, iron and lead from a demolished gatehouse at the Tower, and promised "whatever else became necessary". In 1675 the first stone was laid of the building designed by Sir Christopher Wren, as he put it, "for the Observator's habitation and a little for Pompe". In it, the art of practical astronomy was to be created. Flamsteed made great efforts to get an adequate provision of astronomical instruments and to make arrangements for carrying out his observations but, despite the King's promise, little further was forthcoming, and he had to pay out of his own pocket the assistants to help him carry out his Herculean tasks. The first was to construct a more extensive and accurate catalogue of the fixed stars than any then existing; the second was the systematic observation of the sun, moon and planets with a view to revising the theories of their apparent movements and to constructing tables from which their positions could be computed with greater accuracy. The work, which he did not live to complete, was finished by his two devoted assistants.

John Flamsteed became the first Astronomer Royal on the founding of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. Coincidentally, like Johannes Hevelius he was the son of a prosperous brewer. As his career progressed, he increasingly identified himself with Tycho Brahe, whom he called 'the noble Tycho' or 'the noble Dane'. Like his mentor, Flamsteed was devoted to astronomical measurement, was responsible for equipping and developing an observatory, received patronage from the king while also meeting many of his own costs, and was, he believed, beset by enemies and detractors. Officially called 'Astronomical Observator', Flamsteed preferred to style himself 'Mathematicus Regius' - Tycho had been 'Imperial Mathematician' in Prague. The engravings of the Royal Observatory and its instruments, commissioned by Flamsteed's patron Jonas Moore from Francis Place, were probably part of a scheme to publish an account of the observatory after the manner of Tycho's Mechanica As the first incumbent, Flamsteed had to fashion the image of the occupant of the Royal Observatory and Tycho, 'the greatest prince among astronomers', was a valuable resource. In seeking to assert an independent authority over his observations, Flamsteed could deploy the association between astronomy and nobility represented by Tycho. In an age more attracted to the construction of theories in astronomy, of which Newton's Principia was the outstanding example, Flamsteed attributed a higher morality to laying down a secure store of measurements than to following the uncertain and transient goal of theory. It was a judgement he believed he shared with his noble predecessor.
