Fitzgerald was born in Dublin and studied and taught at Trinity College there. He is best known for suggesting how the ether , by causing the contraction of bodies moving through it, could account for the null results of the Michelson-Morley experiment (see relativity ). His main research effort, however, was to work out the consequences of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory for phenomena not considered by Maxwell, such as the reflection and refraction of light.

Lorentz contraction Pronunciation Key Lorentz contraction , in physics, contraction or foreshortening of a moving body in the direction of its motion, proposed by H. A. Lorentz on theoretical grounds and based on an earlier suggestion by G. F. Fitzgerald; it is sometimes called the Fitzgerald, or Lorentz-Fitzgerald, contraction. The Lorentz contraction hypothesis was put forward in an attempt to explain the negative result of the Michelson-Morley experiment of 1887 designed to demonstrate the earth's absolute motion through space (see ether relativity ). The hypothesis held that any material body is contracted in the direction of its motion by a factor , where v is the velocity of the body and c is the velocity of light. Although the Lorentz contraction did not succeed entirely in reconciling the results of the Michelson-Morley experiment with classical theory, it did serve as the basis for the mathematics of Einstein's theory of relativity. The equations used in relativity theory to change from a coordinate system, or frame of reference, in which the observer is at rest to a second system that is moving at constant velocity with respect to the first system are known as the Lorentz transformation. The Lorentz transformation will result in a stationary observer recording an effect equivalent to the Lorentz contraction when observing an object in uniform motion relative to his system of coordinates. Einstein showed, however, that this effect is due not to the actual deformation of the body in question, as Lorentz had originally supposed, but to a change in the way space and time are measured.

Frances FitzGerald The New York Review of Books September 26, 2002
In a speech at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies this April, Dr. Condoleezza Rice observed that "an earthquake of the magnitude of 9/11 can shift the tectonic plates of international politics." She went on to say:
In the months before September 11 the Bush administration matched its surprisingly ideological domestic programs with what Democrats politely described as a "go-it-alone foreign policy." Bush officials called a halt to negotiations with North Korea and withdrew from attempts to negotiate peace in the Middle East. They refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol on global warming and blocked a series of international arms control treaties. Then, while promising to make cuts in US strategic nuclear weapons, they declined to make an agreement with Russia on mutual reductions.
The main feature of the administration's foreign policy during those months was its decision to deploy national missile defenses. From early June until September 11 the President and his national security advisers spent much of their time lecturing skeptical European, Russian, and Chinese leaders about the threat of a ballistic missile attack from "rogue states" such as North Korea, Iran, or Iraq, and insisting that the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty had to be scrapped. Secretary of State Colin Powell was rarely heard from; and policy seemed to be coming from the Department of Defense.

In this fast and troubled world we sometimes lose our way
But I am never lost I feel this way because... I got rhythm, I got music, I got my girl
Who could ask for anything more?
I've got good times, no more bad times
I've got my girl, who could ask for anything more? Old man trouble I don't mind him You won't find him around my door I've got starlight, I've got sweet dreams I've got my girl, who could ask for, who could ask for more? Old man trouble, I don't mind him You won't find, you're never gonna find him 'round my door Oh, I've got rhythm, I've got music I got my girl, who could ask for anything more? I n order to maintain the school's good reputation and high standard: Student: Grading system - Beginner to 10th grade - every student has to take the grading test in order to progress through the system. Instructor: (See Instructor Course All VKCVT authorised branches in the world are taught by qualified instructors trained personally by G.M. Kan Don't be confused! VING TSUN, WING CHUN, WING TSUN, OR VING CHUN are the same style of Kung Fu which originated from YIP MAN in Hong Kong in 1950. It is just different in spelling from different Chinese Sifus in Hong Kong, when they introduced it to the western world after YIP MAN's death (1972). Nowadays, there are the CLASSICAL (Original, Traditional) MODIFIED and the IMITATIONS of Ving Tsun Kung Fu all over the world. Of course, there are quite a lot of differences between each one as well as each Sifu and each instructor. Start Right Ving Tsun Kung Fu is a fast fighting art of great practical value, but not impressive to look at. It is perhaps the most effective and logical system of close-range combat ever devised. Hence, there are thousands of Ving Tsun practitioners all over the world, and among these there are countless unqualified Sifus and instructors teaching Ving Tsun to suit the demand. It is really sad to see so many Ving Tsun enthusiasts being mislead. In this way Ving Tsun has become a victim of it's own popularity. If it carries on the way it's going now, Ving Tsun will lose more and more of its authenticity in the coming years.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Jump to: Table of Contents Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Major Characters Nick Carraway:
A man in his late twenties originally from Midwest, he has moved East to Long Island's West Egg to start a new life working in bonds in nearby New York City. Having attended Yale University with Tom Buchanan before his service in the war, he continues to feel set apart from the luxurious lifestyle of these people in the East and after rejecting this way of life, moves back to the West. He turns thirty on the evening Myrtle Wilson is killed. Nick alone seems to care after his neighbor Gatsby dies and goes about arranging the funeral himself. Jay Gatsby: Five years before moving to West Egg in pursuit of Daisy whom he has never stopped loving, Gatsby was sent off to Europe for the war, after which he claimed he had gone to Oxford University. Raised by a farm family in the Midwest like Nick, and also in his late twenties, he has earned his wealth from shady business dealings hoping that Daisy will take him back. He throws wild weekend parties throughout the summer for people whom he hardly knows although these end after Daisy expresses her distaste of them. His illusion of being a distinguished gentleman is shattered by a very jealous Tom Buchanan. Daisy is appalled although Gatsby refuses to give up the chase, waiting for her to call him until the very moment he dies.
