The firm of J. W. Fiske and Company was one of the preeminent makers and retailers of ornamental iron and zinc objects in New York City in the second half of the nineteenth century, producing a wide range of garden fountains, statues, urns, and furniture. The resourceful business practices of Joseph Winn Fiske elevated him above other manufactures, and as a result his products were admired as some of the finest of the period. This is true to the extent that in the latter part of the twentieth century misattributions of unmarked pieces to the Fiske company became extremely common. Although known as a manufacturer, Fiske did not have his own zinc factory or iron foundry, thereby bypassing one of the most time-consuming and capital-intensive aspects of the business. Fiske returned to the United States in 1857, and is said to have founded his own business in Boston the following year. The date 1858 is not confirmed in the Boston directories, where Fiske's name first appears in 1862 directory as a resident of 2 Cambridge Street. A New York City court record of 1864 names Fiske as a defendant in a lawsuit, declaring that his company, J.W. Fiske and Company, was founded in December 1863. [6] The first listing of the company found so far dates from 1864, when two addresses in New York City were given 120 Nassau Street and 52 John Street (see Pl.IV). [7]

Thomas Jefferson
Architectural Drawings, [manuscript], circa 1772-1819
From the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Boston, Massachusetts.
Summary description
There are over 400 architectural drawings in the Coolidge Collection of Thomas Jefferson Manuscripts at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Approximately 245 of these drawings (including notebook pages) are plans for Jefferson's home, Monticello. The collection also contains plans of some of Jefferson's other homes, as well as his Paris apartments, and sketches of homes owned by his friends. The collection also contains Jefferson's drawings for municipal and civic institutions: the University of Virginia; capitol buildings for Washington and Richmond; the president's house; and the governor's residences at Williamsburg and Richmond. Some 40 sketches show miscellaneous household objects and machines. In addition, the collection contains 30 drawings not by Jefferson.
Additional information: Numbering schemes for the architectural drawings
The first study of the drawings in the Coolidge Collection of Thomas Jefferson Manuscripts was compiled in 1916 by Fiske Kimball in Thomas Jefferson: Architect (Boston: Privately printed, 1916). Kimball identified 233 Jefferson drawings from the Massachusetts Historical Society's collections in his book and arranged them chronologically, with related subjects grouped together. The numbers Fiske Kimball assigned to the drawings are referred to as "Kimball" or "K" numbers.

Though we've located 300 arrestees and as many other veterans of the FSM, many more people were involved, for whom we have no addresses or contacts. The first list below is of 412 lost Arrestees . This is followed by a very incomplete list of 134 lost others . We lack the names of many hundreds more. If you are one of these people, or know how to reach someone on the list, please email Barbara Stack , keeper of the FSM-A Database. If you know that you're on our snail-mail list, from the '94 Reunion and Mario's Memorial, please send her your email address because we probably don't have it. (We have located 39 people on these lists since we first posted them in winter '97. Another 25 or so, unlisted, have also checked in with us.) Sadly, we have added a Deceased List here. Thank you!

This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!

http://www.outdoor.se/artiklar/alaska/

http://www.outdoor.se/artiklar/alaska/sida3.htm
