Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher (1890 - 1962) was a British mathematician and geneticist whose book, The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection (1930) proved that Mendelian genetics is an essential underlying mechanism of Darwiniam evolution. His work laid the foundations for statistical analysis of all subsequent experiments in the life sciences. Fisher's legacy to evolutionary biology includes the following areas: This photograph of R.A. Fisher was taken in 1912. Previous Next

I have some minor questions about the statistician Sir Ronald A. Fisher.
    1) What is the date of Fisher's paper "Applications of 'Student's'
Distribution," which appeared in Metron, 3, 90-114?
    2) Fisher's wife was Ruth Eileen, daughter of H. Grattan Guinness, MD. Was
she any relation to Ivor Grattan-Guinness?
    3) Fisher's had a daughter Joan Fisher Box. Was her husband the statistician

SOPHUS LIE A reception was held on 29 May 2002 at the splendid Residence in Palace Green, London W8 of the Royal Norwegian Ambassador and Mrs Brautaset at which Arild Stubhaug spoke about the life of Sophus Lie and about his biography, ‘the Mathematician Sophus Lie: It was the Audacity of my Thinking’ (published by Springer). Several members and staff of the LMS were invited and had the pleasure of hearing a speech of welcome from the Ambassador as well as Arild Stubhaug’s fascinating address. J.T. Stuart President FURTHER MATHEMATICS: USE IT OR LOSE IT There was a time when anyone who wanted to read mathematics at university was expected to take double Mathematics at A-level. Nowadays, hardly any departments require it. Most couldn't fill their places if they did. Even if they could, it would mean excluding any student who had attended one of the many schools and colleges that no longer teach Further Mathematics. Most of us would still prefer our first year students to have taken Further Mathematics, even if we can't count on it in designing our courses. But it's under pressure from many directions. Nationally, there are problems like the funding system for FE Colleges and the new entrance requirements of medical schools. At local level, students have to be convinced that it is worth taking, and Heads have to be convinced that it is worth putting on. There are still a lot of teachers who are keen to teach Further Mathematics, and they need some support. You'd have thought it was obvious that we'd prefer students to have taken double mathematics, but if we don't keep saying so, those in charge will assume that we don't really care one way or the other. And we mustn't let our concern not to put off those students who are taking only single Mathematics be interpreted as meaning that we don't think they're missing anything.

Letter to the Bookshelf Probability Theory: The Logic of Science, by E. T. Jaynes. Edited by G. Larry Bretthorst February 24, 2004 I was astonished to read, in Tommaso Toffoli's review of Probability Theory: The Logic of Science , by E. T. Jaynes, a gratuitous ad hominem attack on the late R. A. Fisher. How does it advance the debate on the relative merits of frequentist and Bayesian foundations of probability theory to directly slander Fisher as a "pooh-bah" (defined in my Concise Oxford Dictionary as a "pompous, self-important person"), and to write out his full name and titles, his (hard-earned) Cambridge education and honors in a way clearly meant to be mocking? Fisher died 42 years ago, and I did not know him personally; also I am not qualified to argue for or against his philosophy of statistical inference. But as a former agricultural researcher I can say that his contributions to statistics and experimental design for field and laboratory trials are worthy of respect. And as a member of Sigma Xi I can say that this kind of polemic has no place in a book review.

Mrs. President of the Swiss Confederation,
    Members of the Balzan Foundation,
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Balzan Prize has been awarded to me for my research into the origins of man. The first ten years of my work as a researcher were devoted to the genetics of bacteria. However, in 1952, in Italy, I remembered the original teachings of my great mentor in the field of genetics, Professor Adriano Buzzati-Traverso. I owe to him my interest in the genetics of population and evolution, and I decided to turn to this interest, and to concentrate it on humans. I feel the choice of humans was dictated by my university studies, which I completed in medicine. There was absolutely no doubt that natural selection played a central role. The influence of chance had already been especially investigated by one of the fathers of the mathematical theory of evolution, Sewall Wright, but there were still no usable empirical data. In passing, I am pleased to be able to remind you that Sewall Wright was awarded the Balzan Prize in 1984, having outlived the other two by a good many years. The other geneticist who so far had the honour of receiving this prize was John Maynard Smith, who was one of the most brilliant students of J. B. S. Haldane. So we have the interesting coincidence that of the three geneticists who have been awarded the Balzan Prize until now, Sewall Wright was the last of the three great names who was still alive, and the other two were students of Haldane and Fisher.
