East Finchley, Middlesex, England; educated at Cambridge Univ. (1909–1915; Sc.D., 1926). From 1919 to 1933 he worked at the Rothamsted Experimental Station. He was professor of genetics at University College, London (1933–43) and at Cambridge (1943–57) and conducted research at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Adelaide, Australia from 1957 until his death. He revolutionized inferential statistics, developing the concepts of analysis of variants and factorial experimentation. He wrote the classic Statistical Methods for Research Workers (1925) and Design of Experiments and Statistical Methods (1934). He also made extraordinary contributions to the field of genetics and statistically reconciled the principals of Mendelian inheritance with Darwin 's notion of natural selection. He wrote the seminal work The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection (1930).

Ronald Fisher received a B.A. in astronomy from Cambridge in 1912. There he studied the theory of errors under Stratton using Airy's manual on the Theory of Errors . It was Fisher's interest in the theory of errors in astronomical observations that eventually led him to investigate statistical problems.
Fisher gave up being a mathematics teacher in 1919 to work at the Rothamsted Agricultural Experiment Station where he worked as a biologist and made many contributions to both statistics and genetics. He had a long dispute with Pearson and he turned down a post under him, choosing to go to Rothamsted instead. There he studied the design of experiments by introducing the concept of randomisation and the analysis of variance, procedures now used throughout the world.
In 1921 he introduced the concept of likelihood. The likelihood of a parameter is proportional to the probability of the data and it gives a function which usually has a single maximum value, which he called the maximum likelihood.
In 1922 he gave a new definition of statistics. Its purpose was the reduction of data and he identified three fundamental problems. These are (i) specification of the kind of population that the data came from (ii) estimation and (iii) distribution.

Ronald Munro-Ferguson, 1st Viscount Novar of Raith
Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson , later 1st Viscount Novar of Raith ( 6 March 30 March ), sixth Governor-General of Australia , was probably the most politically influential holder of this post. He was born at his family's home near Kirkaldy in Fifeshire Scotland , the son of a wealthy member of the British House of Commons of old Scottish descent. He was educated at Sandhurst and pursued a military career until , when he was elected to the House. He became private secretary to Lord Rosebery , a leading Liberal , and in he married Lady Helen Blackwood, daughter of the Viceroy of India Like Rosebery, Munro-Ferguson was a Liberal Imperialist. He supported the imperial policies of the Conservative government, including the Boer War , which made him highly unpopular with the radical, anti-war, wing of the Liberal Party. He therefore had little hope of Cabinet office in the governments of Campbell-Bannerman or Asquith , despite his obvious talents. In February

Fisher was a student at a time when there was still controversy about Darwin's theories and when Mendel's work on genes had just been rediscovered. Fisher made important discoveries in statistics (eg. maximum likelihood), genetics, selection and (genetic) dominance. It could be said that he invented a large part of modern statistics. Fisher was brilliant, an idealist and in some ways naive. He held strong views; many of them are politically incorrect by present standards but that would not have bothered him at all.

His article "On a distribution yielding the error functions of several well known statistics" presented Karl Pearson's chi-squared and Student's t in the same framework as the normal distribution and his own analysis of variance distribution z. Fisher's book Statistical methods for research workers showed how to use these distributions.
