Riemann-Finsler-geometrian jatkokurssi (4ov), kevät 2004 ...eli virallisesti: Mat-1.166 Differentiaaligeometria (4 ov) L/V Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866) esitteli klassisena Riemannin geometriana tunnetun matematiikan alan väitöstilaisuudessaan vuonna 1854 erikoistapauksena tutkimastaan geometriasta. Siinä yleisen avaruuden metrinen struktuuri perustuu muotoa ds = F(x ,...,x n ;dx ,...,dx n olevaan kaarielementtiin kun normifunktio F on annettu. Laskujen yksinkertaistamiseksi Riemann keskittyi neliömuotoa F =g ij (x) dx i dx j oleviin metriikoihin. Historiallinen kehitys vakiinnutti nimen 'Riemannin geometria' koskemaan tätä erikoistapausta. Finsler-geometrialla on laajat sovellukset monilla luonnontieteiden aloilla, erityisesti kontrolliteoriassa, optiikassa sekä matemaattisessa biologiassa ja ekologiassa. Kurssia suositellaankin esimerkiksi inversio-ongelmista ja numeriikasta kiinnostuneille opiskelijoille. Kevään 2004 kurssilla tutustutaan klassiseen Finsler-geometriaan modernista näkökulmasta. Useimmilla Riemannin geometrian tuloksilla on luonnolliset vastineensa Finsler-asetelmassa. Geodeesit, konnektiot, kaarevuudet, eksponenttifunktio, Jacobin kentät jne. esitetellään Finsler-geometrian näkökulmasta ja Riemannin geometria saadaan erikoistapauksena. Esitiedoiksi riittää differentiaaligeometrian perusolioiden, sileiden monistojen ja differentiaalimuotojen tuntemus. Erityisesti viime keväänä luennoitua Finsler-geometrian peruskurssia ei edellytetä, vaan tarvittavat peruskäsitteet tullaan kertaamaan kurssin kuluessa.

During his long and prolific tenure at Marburg, Natorp came into contact with a number of illustrious scholars and writers. Boris Pasternak, Karl Barth, and Ernst Cassirer were among his students; Rabindranath Tagore was his friend. In the fateful summer of 1914 the young T.S. Eliot caricatured Natorp, the director of the summer program in which he was enrolled [ image available online ]. In addition to Cohen, academic colleagues included the philosopher Nicolai Hartmann, the theologians Rudolf Bultmann and Rudolf Otto, and the literary scholar Ernst Robert Curtius. Late in life, Natorp directed Hans-Georg Gadamer's doctoral dissertation (Gadamer 1922), and, together with his long-time philosophical interlocutor, Edmund Husserl of Freiburg, engineered Martin Heidegger's appointment as an Extraordinarius at Marburg in 1923. Tutorial Workshop Differential Geometry with Applications to Measurement and Statistics Time: July 29, 2004 Place: University of Michigan Ann Arbor Organizers: Richard Golden University of Texas at Dallas and Jun Zhang University of Michigan at Ann Arbor Workshop Registration Fee: $20 Abstract Although statistical theory and measurement play central roles in mathematical psychology, the application of differential geometry methods to problems in asymptotic statistical theory and measurement is much less prevalent among mathematical psychologists. This workshop will focus upon the application of differential geometry methods to problems in measurement and statistics. The tutorial workshop will immediately precede the regular sessions of the Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Psychology. Typically, workshop talks consist of an approximate 45-60 minutes of tutorial material followed by 15-30 minutes of recent state-of-the-art research in the area targeted by the invited speaker.
