Title : In Flanders Fields Poet : John McCrae Date : 20 Feb 1999 In Flanders fields t... Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq siruguri@ In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields. John McCrae I like the marching rhythm of this poem - short, insistent and conveying a mixture of inspiration and command. The imagery of the poppies in the field (esp. in the last stanza) is really beautiful, echoing the contrast between the exhuberance of Nature and the solemnity of Death, which the soldiers on the lush fields in Ypres must have felt very strongly. I suggested this poem about a week ago and have since seen "Saving Private Ryan", and that has increased the poignancy of it somewhat for me. The Poem - In Flanders Fields
The poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian army physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae ( 1872 - January 28, 1918 - picture left ) remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. World War 1. A question asked again and again: why poppies Poppy seed will lie in the ground for years if the soil is undisturbed. That churned up cemetery known as the Western Front provided the ideal medium for masses of poppies to blanket the graves. When McCrae wrote his poem in May, 1915, bloodred poppies blossomed like no one had ever seen before or probably ever will again. The poppy is also well known as a symbol of sleep. The last line in his poem "We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields". Opium, from which morphine can be made, is derived from some species of poppies. Morphine is a very strong painkiller and was given to wounded soldiers to help them sleep. A much larger dose was given to those who could not survive, helping to end their misery. As well as performing his duties as surgeon, Lieutenant Colonel McCrae also served on the guns when needed and occasionally performed burial services. It was after performing the service for a very dear friend, Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, that McCrae was inspired to write

FIELDS, JOHN F . (?-?). John F. Fields, one of Stephen F. Austin's qv Old Three Hundred qv colonists, received title to a labor of land in Brazoria County on August 24, 1824. The colonial census of 1826 listed him as a single man aged between forty and fifty. Fields was likely the same person who captained the Rob Roy and sailed between New Orleans and Texas ports carrying freight, passengers, and mail. The fact that he was a seaman and probably had little desire to farm or ranch possibly accounts for the relatively small size of his grant. He may also have been the John Fields, born in South Carolina about 1785, who lived in Harrison County in 1850. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Eugene C. Farmers often charge spectators an entrance fee
'Tis the season for crop circles. And the Mel Gibson film, Signs, has renewed interest in who - or what - might make these mysterious markings. Here, controversial crop circle maker John Lundberg tells of his nights in the Wiltshire fields. I don't regard myself as a hoaxer - I'm not interested in rug-pulling anybody. Yet the assumption is that if I make a crop circle, it must be because I want to undermine the beliefs of people who think they are not man-made. John Lundberg: "Some regard us as heretics"
But the myths and folklore that build up around crop circles are what fascinate me. And we've always tried to have as good a relationship as possible with the crop circle research community, even though we're at odds with it. It's like with politics - there are the moderates who are happy to coexist with us and the extremists who won't even admit that one crop circle might be manmade. They're the ones who have really demonised us. They regard us as heretics.
