Genius : The Life and Science of Richard Feynman
by James Gleick
This seems familiar: It made Feynman think wistfully about the days before the future of science had begun to feel like his mission the days before physicists changed the universe and became the most potent political force within American science, before institutions with fast-expanding budgets began chasing nuclear physicists like Hollywood stars. He remembered when physics was a game, when he could look at the graceful narrowing curve in three dimensions that water makes as it streams from a tap, and he could take the time to understand why. posted 6 May 04 at 09:36 am ET

Personal observations
on the reliability
of the Shuttle
by Richard P. Feynman For a successful technology,
reality must take precedence over public relations,
for nature cannot be fooled
Introduction
It appears that there are enormous differences of opinion as to the probability of a failure with loss of vehicle and of human life. The estimates range from roughly 1 in 100 to 1 in 100,000. The higher figures come from the working engineers, and the very low figures from management. What are the causes and consequences of this lack of agreement? Since 1 part in 100,000 would imply that one could put a Shuttle up each day for 300 years expecting to lose only one, we could properly ask "What is the cause of management's fantastic faith in the machinery?" We have also found that certification criteria used in Flight Readiness Reviews often develop a gradually decreasing strictness. The argument that the same risk was flown before without failure is often accepted as an argument for the safety of accepting it again. Because of this, obvious weaknesses are accepted again and again, sometimes without a sufficiently serious attempt to remedy them, or to delay a flight because of their continued presence.
Solid Rockets (SRB)
An estimate of the reliability of solid rockets was made by the range safety officer, by studying the experience of all previous rocket flights. Out of a total of nearly 2,900 flights, 121 failed (1 in 25). This includes, however, what may be called, early errors, rockets flown for the first few times in which design errors are discovered and fixed. A more reasonable figure for the mature rockets might be 1 in 50. With special care in the selection of parts and in inspection, a figure of below 1 in 100 might be achieved but 1 in 1,000 is probably not attainable with today's technology. (Since there are two rockets on the Shuttle, these rocket failure rates must be doubled to get Shuttle failure rates from Solid Rocket Booster failure.)

Richard Feynman, A Life in Science
by John Gribbin and Mary Gribbin
Dutton, Penguin Books, 1997
Richard Feynman (1918-1988) was one of the important physicists of the 20th century. He was also, in his own words, a "curious character," meaning both that he was curious about things and that he was "curious" in the sense of being a curiosity. His personal peculiarities and adventures are detailed in the charming and humorous auto-biographical stories in Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! (1985) and What Do You Care What Other People Think? (1988), both by Feynman as told to his friend Ralph Leighton. After Feynman's death, Leighton published a third volume, Tuva or Bust! The biography by the Gribbins is an excellent story of Feynman's life and an accessible discussion of his physics. We have everything from his childhood to his last words ("This dying is boring," waking up briefly from his final coma, p. 258). A man who genuinely desired to know and was enthusiastic about his discoveries and his teaching is a refreshing example in a day when intellectual life is increasingly nihilistic and autistic. But we also see Feynman's limitations. Philosophical questions never had the slightest appeal to him, nor religion. He was thus a purely scientistic scientist, ignoring or dismissing anything about life and the world that was not accessible to scientific method. Scientism, unfortunately, is not much help in combatting the forms of nihilism and relativism that are just barely philosophically sophisticated enough to sceptically "deconstruct" the epistemological foundations of science itself. Feynman's world would comfortably fit in with that of

A READER'S JOURNAL: The Practice of Writing by David Lodge
Published by the Penguin Press in 1996

Lodge's book would have been better named, The Practice of Re-Publishing Essays , as all the contents of the book are previously published literary essays, most of them written after 1987. This book was a fast read for me, as I was most interested in the essays on writing, such as "Fact and Fiction in the Novel," "Creative Writing," and "The Novel as Communication," and was bored with the essays on writers such as Graham Greene, Nabokov, Joyce, et al. Lodge's essays on writers held no attraction to me, and even though I wanted to like them, I could not. They were academically biased and tendentious to a point that escaped me. But I did unearth a few golden nuggets of insight and wisdom even in those essays: [page 86, on Kingsley Amis's flawless sense of comedic timing] . . . the way he controls the development of an action, or a sentence, to create that combination of surprise and logicality that is the heart of comedy. [page 100, Lodge's apostrophe to his readers] If, gentle reader, you don't wish the most private moments of your life to become the object of interested scrutiny by future generations, you would do well not to become a great writer, or have anything to do with one.
