William Ferrel 's father was Benjamin Ferrel who was a farmer and operated a sawmill, while his mother, whose maiden name was Miller but whose first name seems unknown, was the daughter of a farmer. William was the eldest of his parent's eight children, six boys and two girls. He was born on his parent's farm in a remote rural area of the Allegheny Mountains in Bedford county, which is in southern Pennsylvania in the United States. To the south of Bedford County was Maryland and in 1829 the Ferrel family crossed this state into what today is West Virginia, but it was not in those times since West Virginia was only admitted to the Union in 1863 when it became the 35 th state. There they farmed the land in Berkeley County. William was a shy boy who kept to himself and did not mix with friends but worked hard on the family farm. His education was typical for the time in the rural community in which he lived. There was a schoolhouse with a single room in which all ages of children were educated, and William only received this primitive education during two winters. However he was keen on education and he made a number of difficult journeys to Martinsburg and Hagerstown in north-central Maryland where he bought science books which he read with enthusiasm. He educated himself sufficiently to become a school teacher.

However, other comedians rely on methods such as slapstick (for example Laurel and Hardy), or prop comedy to get the desired humourous effect. Typically, the comedian will stand up and talk to the audience. Since the mid 1980s a new wave of comedy, called alternative comedy has been gaining popularity and delighting audiences with its offbeat style. This normally involves more experiential, or observational reporting to get a laugh.

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page William Ferrel did not write a scientific paper until he was 36. In 1857 Ferrel joined the staff of The American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac. In 1867 Benjamin Peirce persuaded him to join the US Coastal Survey. Ferrel conjectured that tides should retard the Earth's rotation, an effect dismissed by Laplace . Ferrel found that Laplace had neglected 2nd order terms which give the retarding. As well as research on tides Ferrel studied currents, storms and invented a machine to predict tidal maxima and minima. He became the chief founder of the subject of geophysical fluid dynamics. Among his works were Popular Essays on the Movements of the Atmosphere Temperature of the Atmosphere and the Earth's Surface Recent Advances in Meteorology (1886), and A Popular Treatise on the Winds References (3 books/articles) Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index

THE WILLIAM FERREL TIDE-PREDICTING MACHINE
This was the first tide predicting machine used in the United States. It was designed by William Ferrel, a mathematician with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and completed in 1882. The machine summed 19 harmonic tidal constituents and gave direct readings of the predicted times and heights of the high and low waters. Predictions were made on this machine from 1885 through 1991.
