Nicholas Ferrar, deacon, man of prayer
1 December 1637
Nicholas Ferrar, born in 1592, was the founder of a religious community that lasted from 1626 to 1646. After Nicholas had been ordained as a deacon, he and his family and a few friends retired to Little Gidding, Huntingdonshire, England, to devote themselves to a life of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (Matthew 6:2,5,16). They restored the abandoned church building, and became responsible for regular services there. They taught the neighborhood children, and looked after the health and well-being of the people of the district. They read the regular daily offices of the Book of Common Prayer, including the recital every day of the complete Psalter. (Day and night, there was always at least one member of the community kneeling in prayer before the altar, that they might keep the word, "Pray without ceasing.") They wrote books and stories dealing with various aspects of Christian faith and practice. They fasted with great rigor, and in other ways embraced voluntary poverty, so that they might have as much money as possible for the relief of the poor. The community was founded in 1626 (when Nicholas was 34). He died in 1637 (aged 45), and in 1646 the community was forcibly broken up by the Puritans of Cromwell's army. The memory of the community survived to inspire and influence later undertakings in Christian communal living, and one of T.S. Eliot's

    FARRIS, FERRAR, FARRAR
    By Gladys Wheeler Farris
From a small town in Gascony, France, came the Farrises who settled near Versailles, Tennessee in the early 1830's. The town, Franceem, was also known as Ferriers due to the iron mines. From this and that his coat of arms bore six horseshoes, Gwalchelme de Ferriers took his name. It is said that he served as Master of Horse to William the Duke of Normandy, later known as William the conqueror. Gwalchelme arrived in England as a result of the Norman Invasion in 1066.
In the early 16th century, John Ferrar migrated to Hartford. He was related to Robert Ferrar, the bishop, and came from Yorkshire. His wife's name was Mary. John died in 1590. There were at least three children: Nicholas, John and Henry.
Nicholas Ferrar (1544-April 1620) an eminent merchant of London and a Member of the Virginia Company, traded extensively to the East and West Indies. Nicholas married Mary Woodenoth, daughter of George Woodnoth, Shevington. They had issue: Susannah, John, Erasmus, Nicholas, Captain William, Richard and Joyce. Nicholas and Mary were highly respected citizens and their portraits may be viewed in the Master's Lodge at Magdolen College at Cambridge.
Captain William Ferrar was the immigrant ancestor and the founder of the Farrar family in America. He was born in 1593 and came to Virginia on the ship Neptune in April 1618 and died before 11 June 1637, age 44. He amassed many thousands of acres of land by royal grants and purchases. His holdings included his home plantation of 2.000 acres in the James River known as Farrar's Island below Richmond, where the first four generations of the family lived in America. He married about 1625, Cecily Jordan, in Henrico Co., VA, Cecily was born about 1600 in England, emigrated to Virginia aboard the Swan in 1610; died Farrar's Island after 1637. Issue: Colonel William and Lt . Col. John.

People - Nicholas Ferrar at Little Gidding Nicholas Ferrar was of a merchant family in London, which had set up the Virginia Company in the Americas, and was much involved in Court and Parliamentary life. The Virginia company was suppressed under King James, so Nicholas determined to leave London and live in retirement in the country and devote himself to a life of prayer. His mother, Mary, was able to purchase the Manor of Little Gidding as part of a deal to rescue her son John from debt. Her daughter, Susanna Collett and husband John were living at Bourne, also in Cambridgeshire, having fled London during an outbreak of the plague. So in 1625, the whole family entered into the estate at Little Gidding, finding the church used as a barn, and the manor house in need of repair. Establishment of a community
Old Mrs Ferrar's first action was to enter the church for prayer, and to give instructions that the church must be cleaned and restored before any attention was paid to the house. The household numbered about 30 persons, from babies to septuagenarian Mary. A school was established, bringing in local children as well as family; an almshouse for local elderly and infirm widows; and a dispensary for the benefit of the locality. In 1626 Nicholas was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Laud at Westminster Abbey: he refused later to proceed to ordination to the Priesthood.

What is this and how do I leave? Ass-Kicking Motherfucking Miguel Ferrer is a Flash -based website scrutinizing the life and times of actor, musician (drummer for the Jenerators ), father and freedom fighter Miguel Ferrer . It is both a disturbingly detailed homage to Crossing Jordan star Miguel Ferrer (airs mondays 10/9pm on NBC ) and one of those weird Flash sites where nothing ever stops moving. Oh, and there's audio, so crank up your Karmon Har Mark Ham ... your computer speakers. You can leave this site by hitting the "Enter" button at the bottom of this page.
Well... so... why, exactly? This website began originally with the singular purpose of Flash experimentation with the end result being publishing to the web. The reason for Miguel Ferrer as the site's subject should be obvious he's a bad-ass motherfucker. Actually, it was a toss-up between Miguel Ferrer and the manatee (the lovable aquatic mammal) and Ferrer won out because unlike the docile sea cow, HE can protect himself against boat propellers. Miguel Ferrer is also sensible enough to not bathe and/or frolick in the warm waters near and around toxic-dumping industrial sites. The manatee is cousin to the dugong, whereas Miguel Ferrer is cousin to George Clooney , an actor who pulls in... well, he pulls in

He was associated (1618–23) with the Virginia Company and, with his brother John, played a notable role in its affairs. He retired from Parliament and founded (1625) an austere religious community at Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire; the community consisted of 30 persons engaged in charitable works and intense study of the Scriptures. It was visited and approved (1633) by Charles I, but it was later attacked as an Arminian nunnery because of its monastic tendencies and disbanded by Parliament in 1647. See biography by H. P.
