History of Croatian Science
In this section we should again mention the names of Mark Antun Dominis and Rugjer Boskovic , whose work was veritably encyclopaedistic. The first known manual about book-keeping was "Della mercatura e del mercante perfetto," written by Benko Kotruljic On the islet of Kosljun near largest Croatian island of Krk there is a beautiful Franciscan monastery, which had one of the oldest "banks" in Europe. It was operational from the 17th to 19th century, providing loans for the poor at low interest rates, to protect them from exploiters. See "What's on Kvarner," p. 81, available at Appleby Frederik Grisogono (born in Zadar , 1472-1538), a mathematician, physicist, astronomer and physician, was educated in Padova, where later he became a university professor. His commentaries on Euclid's `Elements' were published in Venice in 1507. His most important contribution was the theory of tides, based on the attraction of the Moon, which influenced Mark Antun Dominis. He discovered the antipodal tidal wave. Juraj Dragisic (Georgius Benignus), Franciscan born in the famous Bosnian town Srebrenica, suggested a reform of the Julian calendar to Pope Leon X in 1514 in his study

Hot Hand Homepage 2002 Streak of the Year
Oakland A's Win American League Record
20 Straight Games by Alan Reifman As the hot hand homepage reaches its first birthday, I've been reflecting on what I considered the most exciting sports streak of the past year (2002). Some criteria that could be used include whether the streak broke some kind of major record, whether the streak would be amenable to some type of statistical analysis, and whether some interesting issues could be raised in discussing the streak. Whether for these reasons or others, I have selected the American League-record 20-game winning streak of the Oakland A's as the streak of the year (the overall Major League Baseball record is 26 straight wins by the National League's New York Giants in 1916 ). The typical question to ask in examining a streak such as Oakland's is how likely it would have been for such a streak to occur by chance or (as Tom Gilovich suggested in his online chat would be a more appropriate term) under a model of each game's outcome being independent of the previous game's outcome.

Key Reference Books The following books represent a core reading and reference list for anyone interested in applied probability modelling, with applications in marketing. Many of these books may at first appear rather daunting to those without a solid background in probability and statistics. Don't be scared off; with perseverance and practice, the material becomes more accessible. General Probability and Statistics A working knowledge of probability and statistics is necessary for anyone interested in developing and applying probability models. A classic introductory textbook (at the advanced undergraduate level) is Mood, Graybill, and Boes (1974); its coverage of the material is concise, making it an excellent reference for the basic concepts. Ghahramani (2000) provides a good introduction to the basic concepts and tools of probability upon which applied probability models are built. Another useful book is Ross (2000) only pay attention to the earlier chapters, as topics such as queuing theory are not that relevant to most marketing modellers. In many ways this book is more a collection of solved examples/problems than a traditional textbook. However, the process of working through the examples would result in a thorough understanding of the basic concepts and tools of applied probability models. Two truly classic references are Feller (1968) and Stuart and Ord (1994). Many regard Feller as the bible of discrete probability. Stuart and Ord is a comprehensive reference on statistical distributions and related sampling theory.
