Gino Fano 's father was Ugo Fano and his mother was Angelica Fano. Ugo Fano came from a wealthy family and he had no need for employment. Ugo Fano was a follower of Giuseppe Garibaldi and strongly in favour of Italian unification. In fact on 17 March 1861, ten years before Gino's birth, the Kingdom of Italy was formally created but it was only just before Gino was born that Italian troops captured Rome. Gino grew up in the newly created country which suffered many problems but also had a new confidence in education. Fano studied at the University of Turin which he entered in 1888. His studies there were directed by Corrado Segre and he was also influenced by Castelnuovo . In fact Castelnuovo had been appointed as D'Ovidio 's assistant in Turin the year before Fano began his studies and Corrado Segre had been appointed to the chair of higher geometry in Turin the year that Fano entered the University of Turin. This was an exciting place for research in geometry and it is not surprising that Fano was led to specialise in this area.

Fano became Castelnuovo 's assistant, then was professor at Turin until he was deprived of his chair by the Fascist Regime in 1938. Fano then went to Switzerland and, after 1946, he taught in the USA and Italy. His work was mainly on projective and algebraic geometry. Fano was a pioneer in finite geometry and one of the first people to try to set geometry on an abstract footing. Before Hilbert was to make such abstract statements Fano said As basis for our study we assume an arbitrary collection of entities of an arbitrary nature, entities which, for brevity, we shall call points, and this quite independently of their nature.

7. In Memoriam - Ugo Fano, Ph.D.

In Memoriam: Ugo Fano By Mitio Inokuti With the passing of Ugo Fano on 13 February 2001, the Radiation Research Society lost an influential founding member. A broader community dearly misses a great theoretical physicist. Ugo Fano was born to Rosa Cassin and Gino Fano (1871-1952), professor of mathematics at Turin, Italy, specializing in differential geometry. Having studied mathematics first at the University of Turin, the younger Fano turned to physics under the influence of his cousin, Giulio Racah (1909-1965), a physicist known for the powerful theory of angular momentum. Then Fano was fortunate to receive postdoctoral training from two giants in modern physics: Enrico Fermi at Rome in 1934-1936 and Werner Heisenberg at Leipzig in 1936-1937. In 1939 Fano married Camilla ("Lilla") Lattes, who not only kept a comfortable home but also collaborated with Fano in science and worked as a teacher for many years. In the same year the couple emigrated to the United States. Fano’s American career began with pioneering work in 1940-1944 in what was later to be called radiation biology with M. Demerec and others, at the Department of Genetics of the Carnegie Institution at Cold Spring Harbor. It is noteworthy that, after a seminar in Rome by P. Jordan on x-ray effects on genetic material, Fermi had suggested to Fano that the biological action of radiation would be an important and suitable topic for study. Fano’s papers in this period concerned chromosomal rearrangements, mutations, lethal effects, and genetic effects of X-rays and neutrons on

Abstract. Consider the vase on the table and the lump of clay from out of which it is made. Is this one single entity before us or two? Could that very same vase be made out of another lump of clay, or have another shape? And what differentiates a material object such as a vase from entities of different sort, such as the actions of the potter or her intentions? Starting from puzzles such as these, this volume aims to offer an introductory treatment of the main topics in contemporary analytic metaphysics: the nature of things, their identity and persistence conditions, their relations of dependencymore generally, the preconditions for our ability to speak about the world at all.
