PHILOSOPHIC BACKGROUND
IBN EZRA
A) GENERAL
Abraham ben Meir ibn Ezra. Aben Ezra. Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn al-Majid. Abenare, Avenare. Abraham Judaeus. Born in Toledo about 1089-1092. He translated from Arabic into Hebrew three treatises on grammar by Judah Hayyuj (second half of the tenth century), Rome 1140; two treatises on astrology by Mashallah, before 1148; al-Biruni's commentary on al-Khwarizmi's tables, Narbonne 1160. The last mentioned is known only through Ibn Ezra's version. Ibn Ezra's mind was a strange mixture of rationalism and mysticism. His writings show his deep interest in magic squares and the mystical properties of numbers. He explained a decimal system of numeration: the first nine letters of the Hebrew alphabet, plus a circle for the zero, with place value. Problems involving the product of complex fractions. Account of the regula infusa ben Solomon, to solve equations. For example, given m(ax + b) + c = let ax + b = y then my + c = y = -c/m ax + b = -c/m which can easily be solved. One of the earliest forms of the traditional arithmetical problem known as "Turks and Christians." Combinations of n things taken r at a time. Ibn Ezra knew that C(n,r) = C(n, n-r)

Great Leaders of our People Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra
Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra was born in 1089 in Spanish Toledo and died, after traveling extensively throughout Europe, in 1167, probably in Calahorra. He excelled in Talmud but made his greatest contribution to Jewish Literature in the area of Biblical Commentary, that emphasized knowledge of the Hebrew language and its grammar. Despite his extensive travels, which may have taken him to London, he remained true to his Sephardic roots by successfully combining Torah scholarship on the highest level with enthusiastic pursuit of secular subjects. Thus, he became expert in philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and, most significantly, poetry. This was in line with the prevailing Islamic culture, which to a large extent was the trend-setter in the culture of that time. Ibn Ezra lived a life of great misfortune and tragedy. His wife died at a young age and several of his children died in infancy. Probably the greatest tragedy of his life was the apostasy under great pressure of his son Yitzchak. He laments in one of his poems, “If I were a manufacturer of shrouds, the Angel of Death would refuse to carry out his duties.” He is one of the few Torah giants who were memorialized by English poets. But Robert Browning wrote ca. 1862 the poem “Rabbi Ben Ezra” about Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra. Recognizing the difficulties of the scholar’s life, he wrote:

Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra's Commentary to the Torah:
Title
This original title for Ibn Ezra's commentary on the Torah is rarely used. It is taken to mean "the book of the upright" and is the title of a work that is cited in the Bible.(e.g., Joshua 10:13).
Author
Rabbi Abraham ben Meir Ibn Ezra was born and educated in the "Golden Age" of Muslim Spain. He excelled as a poet, philosopher, grammarian and Biblical commentator.
Dates
c. 1089 - c. 1164.
Place
Originally from Tudela, Spain. The latter part of his life (after 1140) was spent wandering in poverty through Italy, Provence, France, England, Egypt and Israel. It was during his wanderings that he composed most of his many influential literary works.
Description
Ibn Ezra's works of Biblical interpretation were based primarily on a meticulous foundation of Hebrew grammar and philology, and attention to the realia of Biblical life. His critical sense leads him to raise questions regarding the traditional ascriptions of authorship to Biblical books, anticipating some of the conclusions of modern scholarship. Ibn Ezra was aware of his departures from Rashi 's approach; though fact he was not entirely above applying homiletical or allegorical interpretations, as in his commentaries to Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs.

What is Commentary?
Once thought of as an entirely passive experience, reading is now understood more and more as 'interactive'- that is, that the reader 'constructs' meaning from the text. True of any written text (or even oral communication), but especially relevant to the study of Torah, just understanding the text (ie. the simple, intended meaning- or pshat ) is not always so simple. (Biblical scholars, for example, engage in this; typically, they are interested in what the original listener understood). However, unlike other ancient (and modern) documents, the biblical text is understood by the Rabbis to also speak to today's listener. For the Rabbis, the Torah, having a Divine Author, must be eternal. The Torah must therefore be relevant in every generation, and to every individual. So, in addition to trying to understand the text's pshat , the Rabbis also read the text with a desire to find meaning. While sometimes this secondary meaning may be outside the text's original meaning (

In old Greek the word synagogue means: “ The usual place where the Jews assemble to receive religious teachings and to worship Some of these temples were built close to a source of water, not for ablution, as much as for protection from any attack. Ben Ezra synagogue was originally a Christian church. Some texts mentioned that The Copts could not pay the taxes due to the Muslim ruler at the time and Abraham Ben Ezra who came from Jerusalem bought the church in 882 A.D, during the reign of Ahmed Ibn Tulun with the sum of 20,000 Dinners. 60. STRADIVARIUS A Synopsis
Ailey is crushed both by the loss and betrayal by Lucienne. Ailey goes to his friend and mentor, rabbi ben ezra who agrees to help.
http://home.earthlink.net/~novelistdpl/synopsis.html
STRADIVARIUS: A Synopsis This story joins the two facts previously mentioned into a tale of passion for music, love, integrity and the contested possession of the great Stradivarius Violin, "Hercules". It is a story that crosses the boundaries of culture and religion. It is also a story of real justice versus senseless, mechanistic law.
In the novel two central themes are interwoven. One is the history, in the form of anecdotal descriptions, of the history of the Stradivarius violin, "Hercules", from the moment of its creation, through the hands of several great violinists of history, to the moment when it was stolen in St., Petersburg then carried east across Russia until it finally arrives and is hidden in the wall of a Korean farm house.
The second and dominant theme begins when a battered army sergeant from the hills of W. Virginia finds the "Hercules" and brings it and a Medal of Honor back to the United States. For Sergeant Martin Luther Cole the violin becomes a talisman of beauty. It represents the only thing of value to survive that terrible time. For him it is endowed with Grace and he comes to understand that he is meant to preserve it and with it fulfill a destiny he cannot yet imagine.
A quarter of a century later the reclusive Martin Cole learns that his orphaned cousin, seven year old Ailey Parkman Barkwood has a remarkable musical talent, and it is for the violin. The circle of destiny begins to close. With the help of Ailey's grade school teacher and adoptive parent, Miss Iris Bentley, Luther and Miss Iris arrange for Ailey to go to Bronxville, New York where he will become the student of Maestro Joachim Everade, a world famous violin teacher.
