Rabbi Ben Ezra
In 1864, Rabbi Ben Ezra was first published in "Dramatis Personae," and the poem had thirty-two stanzas of six lines each. William Devane believes that Browning was inspired to write Rabbi Ben Ezra by Edward Fitzgerald’s The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Although this theory has not been proven, the philosophy of the Rabbi and the Persian tent-maker possess remarkable similarities. For example, the potter’s wheel is a strong figure in both poems (Devane p. 293). In order to understand the character of Rabbi Ben Ezra, it is important to know that Abraham Ibn Ezra was pushed out of his home land of Spain and forced to become a sojourner in foreign lands. This experience allowed him to see the world and enrich his philosophies of theology and science. Ibn Ezra’s greatest achievements were his commentaries on the books of the Old Testament, and he was a strong believer in the immortality of the soul. Because the religious beliefs of the Rabbi Ben Ezra are so similar to Browning’s beliefs, the poem can be studied as an expression of Browning’s own religious faith (Devane p.294). The main theme of Rabbi Ben Ezra is the "unity of life." Using the present life as best possible is important for advancement into the future. The Rabbi believes in balancing the body and the soul so that "nor soul helps flesh more than flesh helps soul" (Powell p.198). Through the lines, "Our times are in His hand/ Who saith, A whole I planned," the reader can identify the religious confidence that Rabbi Ben Ezra has. He has a hope for the future and an acceptance of the present. According to Naish, "The teaching of the Gospel serves as present inspiration of a faith content to leave the future in the confidence. Life eternal is there defined, not with reference to a future state, but as the knowledge of God" (p.201-202).

Poor vaunt of life indeed,
Were man but formed to feed
On joy, to solely seek and find and feast:
Such feasting ended, then
As sure an end to men;
Irks care the crop-full bird? Frets doubt the maw-crammed beast?
Rejoice we are allied
To That which doth provide
And not partake, effect and not receive!
A spark disturbs our clod;
Nearer we hold of God
Who gives, than of His tribes that take, I must believe.

    http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/rb/friedman6.html
    Eli Friedman, English 151, Brown University, 2003 The speaker of the poem, "Rabbi Ben Ezra" begins by telling his audience to trust in God and not be afraid of anything. The speaker is an older man who is more content now that he is in his senior years. He feels wiser and more knowing because of his age. He tells the audience that they should not be concerned with anything that happens to them, for everything is the will of God and God has his reasons. By doing this, however, the speaker finds a contradiction that he must look into. For thence, a paradox
    Which confronts while it mocks,
    Shall life succeed in that it seems to fail:
    What I aspired to be,
    And was not, confronts me:
    A brute I might have been, but would not sink i' the scale. What is he but a brute
    Whose flesh has soul to suit,
    Whose spirit works lest arms and legs want play?
    To man, propose this test
    Thy body at its best,
    How far can that project thy soul on its lone way?
    Questions
    1. When the speaker questions whether life can succeed in the places that it fails, is he questioning life's failures in the work world (realism) or its failures in the spiritual world (fantastic)? 2. In the second stanza of this passage, the speaker turns things inside out by saying that a man's soul suits his body as well that soul is doing work while the arms and legs play. Does the speaker state this to express his belief that the spirit must be satisfied before anything else?
