Christopher Columbus and the Lunar Eclipse About 500 years ago, Christopher Columbus was on his fourth voyage to the New World . His earlier voyages were the stuff of legends. Unfortunately there's an end to every good luck streak and on this voyage, bad luck would strike in the form of worms. In the days of wooden boats, worms would attack and bore holes in the wood which eventually would cause leaking and ultimately sinking if repairs were not made. Columbus had no choice but to beach his leaky ship on St. Anne's Bay Jamaica , and make repairs. Chris and his sailors spent over a year there, most of it waiting for his lieutenant's ship to come and help him. The local Jamaican natives were quite fascinated with Columbus and his men and were very nice to them. They provided Columbus and his sailors with food and other supplies and helped them build shelters. In fact, the Natives treated Columubs better than his own men treated him. The sailor's on this voyage were a pretty rough bunch and had repeatedly argued with Columbus , coming close to mutiny on several occasions. Unfortunately, the sailors gave no better treatment to the Jamaicans, and took advantage of them whenever they could, even

Thales and Geometry Thales is the founder of Greek geometry. 41 This statement implies not only that he introduced geometrical studies into Greek usage, but also that he founded Greek geometry with its striking specificity. According to the evidence of Proclus (who used Eudemus's book systematically), Thales proved that the circle is halved by its diameter; he found out and stated that the angles at the base of an isosceles triangle are equal; and he discovered the theorem of the equality of vertical angles and that of the equality of triangles with equal bases and adjoining angles (11A20 DK). In the two latter cases there are direct references to Eudemus (frag. 135, 134 Wehrli). [End Page 404] There are no grounds for believing that tradition has preserved all of Thales' achievements. Thus, according to Pamphila's evidence quoted by Diogenes Laertius (D.L.1.24), but naturally absent from Proclus's commentary on the first book of Euclid's Elements, Thales also inscribed a right-angled triangle in a circle. A. I. Zaitsev defines Thales' achievements as a "real revolution in the forms of human cognition," to wit: "first, Thales realized the necessity or at least the desirability of proving geometrical statements that seemed self-evident, and second, he gave those proofs." Now we may ask, why did Thales (unlike the Egyptians and Babylonians) begin to prove theorems? "The first mathematical proofs," Zaitsev writes, "were the natural fruit of a social climate where the discovery of a new truth not only gave an immediate satisfaction but could also bring fame. For it is clear that in these conditions, mathematical truths confirmed with proof became a particularly attractive object of search; one who found a faultless proof could as a rule count on public recognition, while the achievements in any other field of knowledge could as a rule be disputed." 42

The Democratic foundation established by the ancient Greeks Abstract: Our integrated project blends the subjects of math and history. Since two of our group members never bothered to show up these are the only two subjects we will be covering, with the two history majors focusing on religion and government respectively. The math portion will focus on famous Greek mathematicians. With the help of a special education major, we will alter the plan to cater to the needs of special needs students.
I plan to use the week to explain how the ancient Greeks introduced a democratic form of government. This was a revolutionary form of rule in a world of dictators and tyrants. Throughout the week the class will learn about the origins of Greek democracy and its prominent figures. We will then compare and contrast the Greek form of democracy to the one used in our own government. We will also be discussing the possible reasons why democracy failed in Greece and if it seems possible for the United States to suffer the same fate. Names and Majors of the Team Members:
  • Clint Shewmaker- History Education Brandon Schoenman- History Education Jose Gonzalez- Mathematics Education Tom Witschi- Special Education
Subjects Integrated:
  • History/ Government: The Democratic foundation established by the ancient Greeks History: Greek Gods Math: The Mathematical foundations that was built by the Greeks
Objectives:
  • Upon completion of this lesson, participating students will be able to note five key similarities between the ancient Greek democracy and the democracy of the United States.

How I got into Classics Research Interests Publications Some Links ... Subjects Taught How I got into Classics : I started Latin when I was 13, and was immediately intrigued by this contact with a distant world coming so close. Greek followed the next year, and the fascination with the stories, thoughts and language just increased. Ancient philosophy provided me with one of the most fascinating aspects of the ancient world. Its riches, puzzles and paradoxes will probably continue to occupy my mind for a long time to come. Research interests I am interested in the history of ideas and its transmission. My research has sofar focused on Greek philosophy. Greek philosophers were not only remarkably original, but also set the agenda for many centuries in the problems they discussed and the answers they suggested. Some of my projects are about problems and issues arising from bringing literary perspectives to philosophical writings (interaction of form and content): problems of transmission, tradition and authority, genre, orality and literacy. I have written on the Peripatetics (Aristotle and his school : their methodology, their criticism of previous thinkers), transmission of texts and ideas (fragments, adaptations), and on philosophers from
