Euclid
Euclid of Alexandria (Greek: Eukleides ) (circa BC) was a Greek mathematician who lived in the 3rd century BC in Alexandria His most famous work is the Elements , a book in which he deduces the properties of geometrical objects and integer s from a set of axiom s, thereby anticipating the axiomatic method of modern mathematics . Although many of the results in the Elements originated with earlier mathematicians, one of Euclid's major accomplishments was to present them in a single logically coherent framework. The geometry of Euclid was known for many centuries as "the" geometry, but is nowadays referred to as Euclidean geometry The fifth postulate of the Euclidean geometry , called the parallel postulate , states that if a straight line note : in Euclid's terminology a line may be finite) intersects two other straight lines, and the sum of the interior angle s on one side of the line is less than 180 degrees (literally "two right angles"), then the two lines, if they are lengthened indefintely, will intersect on the same side on the line as the interior angles. Since this axiom is less obvious than the others, many mathematicians tried to derive it from the others. Then, in the 19th century , Janos Bolyai (and probably Carl Friedrich Gauss before him) realized that its negation leads to consistent non-euclidean geometries , which were later developed by Lobachevsky Riemann and Poincaré.

BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
The Greek mathematician Euclid (active 300 BC) wrote the Elements, a collection of geometrical theorems. The oldest extant major mathematical work in the Western world, it set a standard for logical exposition for over 2,000 years. Virtually nothing is known of Euclid personally. It is not even known for certain whether he was a creative mathematician himself or was simply good at compiling the work of others. Most of the information about Euclid comes from Proclus, a 5th-century-AD. Greek scholar. Because Archimedes refers to Euclid and Archimedes lived immediately after the time of Ptolemy I, King of Egypt (ca. 306-283 BC), Proclus concludes they were contemporaries. Euclid's mathematical education may well have been obtained from Plato's pupils in Athens, since it was there that most of the earlier mathematicians upon whose work the

Little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. Most information given on Euclid is not thought to be reliable. Euclid was a very common name around this period, so much of the material that is associated with Euclid of Alexandria is fictitious because there are many references to a man named Euclid. There are three hypotheses surrounding Euclid's life. 1. Euclid was a historical character who wrote the Elements and the other works attributed to him. 2. Euclid was a member of a group of mathematicians working at Alexandria. Each one contributed to writing the 'complete works of Euclid', with the group writing books under Euclid's name even after his death. 3. Euclid of Megara lived about 100 years before Euclid of Alexandria. Euclid of Alexandria didn't exist at all. A group of mathematicians wrote The 'complete works of Euclid and took the name Euclid from Euclid of Megara. The evidence surrounding the first hypothesis is substantial. Little evidence exists which contradicts this hypothesis because it was accepted without question by everyone for over 2000 years. Even though some of the books of the Elements, many authors vary their style. Besides, Euclid undoubtedly based the Elements of previous works, so it is quite feasible as to why the book are written in different styles.

Historical Setting
Euclid of Alexandria is believed to have lived during the reign of Ptolemy I (306-283 B.C.). Alexander the Great ruled a great part of the known world for twelve years until his death in 323 B.C. at the age of 33. At Alexander's death, His leading general, Ptolemy, became governor of Egypt and completed the city of Alexandria, Alexander's great monument in Egypt. Ptolemy devoted himself to making Alexandria the center for intellectual learning. Ptolemy set up the Museum in Alexandria for teaching and research. At the Museum, students pursued their studies with access to the finest libraries. In return for regular lectures, the members of the Museum received free board, exemption from taxes, and salary stipends. The lived in very luxurious conditions and ate their meals together in a vast dining hall. The Museum became a milestone in the history of science. The Museum was forever lost in 641 A.D., but Euclid was believed to have been one of its many gifted scholars. Elizabeth Dietz

The Mathematics of Euclid (325-265 BC)(Greek)
Euclid of Alexandria is well-known for his great work, The Elements , which is a compilation of all the Geometry of his time. However, Euclid's effort is more than just a simple compilation of previous works. It is the first systematic approach to Geometry; the first axiomatic approach of its kind. Although usually associated with Geometry, The Elements also contained some works on Number Theory. Although, the formal system advocated by Euclid is incomplete, for the majority of us Euclid's Geometry is good enough, because it is simple yet concise. In the 20th century, David Hilbert completed the system by increasing the number of axioms from 5 to 20, and proved that the resulting system is complete and consistent. However, Euclid's effort cannot be underestimated. In fact, The Elements remained the Geometry text for 2000 years and is still used because of its simplicity. An it is the fifth postulate of The Elements that sprout the various non-Euclidean Geometry known to us now.

    Euclid
*This is a brief essay I put together for a world history class. It's not a work of art, but here goes*: Euclid of Alexandria is one of the most important and influential mathematicians in history. Living in ancient Alexandria, he wrote The Elements, a geometry textbook used in some places until the twentieth century. His work in geometry provided the foundation on which all future mathematicians were educated.
For a man of such great significance to the world of mathematics, little is known about his actual life. Euclid is thought to have lived from 325-265 BC, mostly in Alexandria. He was taught at The Academy in Athens, founded by Plato, and probably tutored another great mathematician, Archimedes. Euclid also founded a great mathematics school in Alexandria. Little was ever written about Euclid, and the available information is scarce and of questionable accuracy. Much of the information we do have is from authors like Proclus who lived centuries later, writing about his books, not his life.
If little has ever been made of Euclid's life, then the opposite is true of his book. The Elements was used as the primary geometry resource for over 2000 years, and his lessons could still be used today. Although it contains 13 volumes, much of the work may not be Euclid's. Some of the chapters seem to be written with different styles, and others are geared for different ages, leading one to believe that he inserted other mathematicians' work into his own.

Euclid of Alexandria is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on mathematics The Elements . The long lasting nature of The Elements must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. However little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. Proclus , the last major Greek philosopher, who lived around 450 AD wrote (see [1] or [9] or many other sources):- Not much younger than these pupils of Plato is Euclid, who put together the "Elements", arranging in order many of Eudoxus 's theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus 's, and also bringing to irrefutable demonstration the things which had been only loosely proved by his predecessors. This man lived in the time of the first Ptolemy; for Archimedes , who followed closely upon the first Ptolemy makes mention of Euclid, and further they say that Ptolemy once asked him if there were a shorted way to study geometry than the Elements, to which he replied that there was no royal road to geometry. He is therefore younger than Plato 's circle, but older than

Euclid of Alexandria is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on mathematics "The Elements" . The long lasting nature of "The Elements" must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time. However little is known of Euclid's life except that he taught at Alexandria in Egypt. There is information that he was born in Megara, close to Athens. Euclid's most famous work is his treatise on mathematics "The Elements". The book was a compilation of knowledge that became the centre of mathematical teaching for 2000 years. Probably no results in "The Elements" were first proved by Euclid but the organisation of the material and its exposition are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using earlier textbooks as he writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions which are never used such as that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. Euclid also wrote the following books which have survived: "Data" (with 94 propositions), which looks at what properties of figures can be deduced when other properties are given; On "Divisions" which looks at constructions to divide a figure into two parts with areas of given ratio; "Optics" which is the first Greek work on perspective; and "Phaenomena" which is an elementary introduction to mathematical astronomy and gives results on the times stars in certain positions will rise and set. Euclid may not have been a first class mathematician but the long lasting nature of "The Elements" must make him the leading mathematics teacher of antiquity or perhaps of all time.
