Escher was a Dutch graphic artist, most recognized for spatial illusions, impossible buildings, repeating geometric patterns (tessellations), and his incredible techniques in woodcutting and lithography. He was born June 1898 and died March 1972. His work continues to fascinate both young and old across a broad spectrum of interests. He was a man studied and greatly appreciated by respected mathematicians, scientists and crystallographers yet he had no formal training in math or science. He was a humble man who considered himself neither an artist or mathematician. Intricate repeating patterns, mathematically complex structures, spatial perspectives all require a "second look". Maurits Cornelis Escher, born in Leeuwarden, 17 june 1898, received his first instruction in drawing at the secondary school in Arnhem, by F.W. van der Haagen, who helped him to develop his graphic aptitude by teaching in the technique of the linoleum cut. From 1919 to 1922 he studied at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design in Haarlem, where he was instructed in the graphic techniques by S. Jessurun de Mesquita, whose strong personality greatly influenced escher's further development, as graphic artist. In 1922 he went to Italy and 1924 settled in Rome. During his 10 year stay in Italy he made many study-tours, visiting Abruzzia, the Amalfi coast, Calabria, Sicily, Corsica and Spain. In 1934 he left Italy, spent two years in Switzerland and five years in Brussels before settling in Baarn (Holland) in 1941, where he died on march 27, 1972, at the age of 73 years.

The Biography of Escher
Maurits Cornelis Escher, (or M. C. Escher, as he is known to virtually everyone who has heard of him), is known primarily for his incredible artistic talent that mingles a surreal sense of beauty with mathematical connotations and tesselations that often "tweak the mind" and leave eveyone from the first-time viewer to the Escher connosieur in an awe-struck stupor. The small town of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands can boast bringing this world-renouned artist to life on June 17th, 1898, roughly 100 years ago. He spent most of his youth and was schooled in the city of Arnhem, where he was taught primary skills and began his study of art. F. W. van der Haagen, Escher's art teacher, instructed him in various forms, such as linoleum prints. Whether Escher's full aptitude had shown itself by this point and simply not been noticed as anything unusual, or there simply hadn't been the time for his talent to devellop to a significant degree to warrant notice, is not known at this time. Showing an interest in graphic art (and following his father's advice), he went to a secondary school in Haarlem to study architecture. However, in 1919 a Dutch artist there (at the now defunct School for Architectural and Decorative Arts) by the name of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita recognized

    Maurits Cornelis Escher
    Dutch graphic artist (1898-1972) - One of my favorites, capturing many aspects of the 'impossible' in his works. His art can be roughly divided in: the landscape and the mathematical epochs. The first accounted for beautiful pictures of south italian landscapes, on woodcut and other techniques. The second (and that lasted until his death) was a time of experimeting with new notions of space and topology. This brought him together to many great mathematicians of his time, and his work sometimes was the only palpable thing they have to show what their work was about. His most famous pictures are those of the metamorphosis and the impossible. The first ones put in a single frame a complete "morphing" without any jump from one transformation to the other. The others depict impossible things, that could never happen. Like a ever climbing stair, a closed waterfall (on wich the water runs up all the time) and others. Many of his works in the last phase show different topologies and is considered by many the inspiration for fractal geometry. Some links to his images:
