I was awake enough to realize that it was paul erdos, one of the most curious (in both senses), prolific and insightful mathematicians of this century.
http://www.math.temple.edu/~paulos/erdnash.html
I remember once while in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin staying at my office until 4 a.m. Stumbling through the hall bleary-eyed on my way home, I came upon a little gnome of a man who, as if it were the middle of the day, began questioning me about my results in a kindly yet most energetic way. Who should be haunting those empty halls at that hour, except janitors? I was awake enough to realize that it was Paul Erdos, one of the most curious (in both senses), prolific and insightful mathematicians of this century. It's not surprising that Erdos would often remark that a mathematician was a machine for turning coffee into theorems. Toward the end of his life he even partook of amphetamines to keep his mental machinery churning into the wee hours. Such eccentricity in the men who study circles and numbers is only part of the story of mathematicians Erdos and John Nash, the subjects of the new biographies "My Brain Is Open," "The Man Who Loved Only Numbers" and "A Beautiful Mind." But for many, the eccentricity may be the most intriguing part. Science writer Bruce Schechter's "My Brain Is Open" is a mathematical biography of Erdos, born in 1913 in Hungary to academic parents. Erdos was cosseted by a mother who had just lost her other two children to scarlet fever and educated by a father who early on taught him about prime numbers and infinite sets. Both influences were life-defining. In later years he related how he independently discovered the notion of negative numbers at the age of 3 but didn't butter his own toast until he was 20.

Me and my coworkers have developed an Erd¶s factor
One of the legends about Erd¶s is that he refused to butter his own bread, preferring to leave such lowly tasks to his host (or hostess, more likely...)
I do tech support in higher education, and we use this anecdote a lot when we come across a defiantly eccentric academic, and rate them relative to Erd¶s in practical incompetence.
I recently helped someone who has been word processing for at least ten years (given the software package they insist upon using). This person also who reads and answers their own email. Yet, for some reason, it fell to me, here in 2003, to show them how to navigate the World Wide Web, apparently for the first time. They were absolutely terrified of the pop ups that sprouted around the official site for their favorite sports team, and rather disappointed that the site for their favorite newspaper didn't mimic the front page exactly.

Book Description Customer Reviews Paul Hoffman, publisher of Encyclopedia Brittanica, has written a lively biography of Paul Erdos, a brilliant number theorist who spent his long and productive career with no permanent residence. Although Erdos had many oddities, such as the inability to handle some of the most mundane tasks such as taking a shower without pointing the nozzle in the wrong direction and getting water all over the floor, he was a very charming and lovable man, unlike, for example, John Nash throughout much of the latter's life. I think that a more accurate title would have been The Man Who Understood Only Numbers. Certainly he loved children and had no apparent malice towards anyone. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in people of unusual intelligence. This is not a math book. No knowledge of mathematics whatsoever is necessary for the enjoyment of this book and the appreciation of its subject. Paul Erdos, a Math Wayfarer
At Field's Pinnacle, Dies at 83
By GINA KOLATA r. Paul Erdos, a legendary mathematician who was so devoted to his subject that he lived as a mathematical pilgrim with no home and no job, died Friday in Warsaw, Poland. He was 83. The cause of death was a heart attack, according to an E-mail message sent out this weekend by Dr. Miki Simonovits, a mathematician at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who was a close friend. Erdos (pronounced AIR-dosh) was attending a mathematics meeting in Warsaw when he died, Simonovits reported. The news, only now reaching the world's mathematicians, has come as a blow. Dr. Ronald L. Graham, the director of the information sciences research center at AT&T Laboratories, said, "I'm getting E-mail messages from around the world, saying, 'Tell me it isn't so.' " Never, mathematicians say, has there been an individual like Paul Erdos. He was one of the century's greatest mathematicians, who posed and solved thorny problems in number theory and other areas and founded the field of discrete mathematics, which is the foundation of computer science. He was also one of the most prolific mathematicians in history, with more than 1,500 papers to his name. And, his friends say, he was also one of the most unusual. Erdos, "is on the short list for our century," said Dr. Joel H. Spencer, a mathematician at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

The Generosity of Paul Erdos'
Game Theory The Generosity of Paul Erdos' is legendary. This quote was taken from Paul Hoffman's 1998 book entitled: "The Man Who Loved Only Numbers: the story of Paul Erdos and the search for mathematical truth," NY:Hyperion, pg.10.
In the late 1980s Erdos heard of a promising high school student named Glen Whitney who wanted to study mathematics at Harvard but was a little short of the tuition. Erdos arranged to see him and, convinced of the young man's talent, lent him $1000. He asked Whitney to pay him back only when it would not cause financial strain. A decade later Graham heard from Whitney, who as last had the money to repay Erdos. "Did Erdos expect me to pay interest?" Whitney wondered. "What should I do?" he asked Graham. Graham talked to Erdos. "Tell him," Erdos said, "to do with the thousand dollars what I did."

July, 1998 by Paul Hoffman
He covered the floor with cereal. He couldn't close a window by himself. He woke you up at 4 A.M. shouting about number theory. Paul Erdos may have been the world's worst houseguest, but he was also the world's most generous and prolific mathematician. It was March 1997 at the University of Memphis, and the students had scattered for spring break. The campus would have been deserted if it hadn't been for 260 world-class mathematicians from four continents who had come together for the 919th meeting of the American Mathematical Society. Apple trees were blossoming, warblers were singing to their mates, and the muddy waters of the nearby Mississippi were surging to flood levels. Inside a boxy brick building, in windowless lecture rooms, immune to the explosion of spring, were the mathematicians, cheerfully holed up for two long days of proving and conjecturing. So did newspaper obituaries of Paul Erdos (pronounced ER-dish), the most prolific mathematician of our time, who "left" on September 20, 1996. Left was Erdos's word for "died"; died was the word he reserved for someone who had stopped doing mathematics. Erdos did mathematics up to the very end, delivering a lecture in Warsaw on his latest conjectures in geometry just hours before succumbing to a massive double heart attack at the age of 83. He defied the conventional wisdom that mathematics is just a young man's game.
