Paul Erdos, a Math Wayfarer at Field's Pinnacle, Dies at 83
By GINA KOLATA Paul Erdos, a legendary mathematician who was so devoted to his subject that he lived as a mathematical pilgrim with no home and no job, died Friday in Warsaw, Poland. He was 83. The cause of death was a heart attack, according to an E-mail message sent out this weekend by Dr. Miki Simonovits, a mathematician at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who was a close friend. Erdos (pronounced AIR-dosh) was attending a mathematics meeting in Warsaw when he died, Simonovits reported. Never, mathematicians say, has there been an individual like Paul Erdos. He was one of the century's greatest mathematicians, who posed and solved thorny problems in number theory and other areas and founded the field of discrete mathematics, which is the foundation of computer science. He was also one of the most prolific mathematicians in history, with more than 1,500 papers to his name. And, his friends say, he was also one of the most unusual. Erdos, "is on the short list for our century," said Dr. Joel H. Spencer, a mathematician at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

My experiences with Paul Erdos
- Prof Herbert Fleischner
Paul Erdos who `left' (as he would have phrased it) last September, was one of the greatest mathematicians of our time. No doubt. The obituaries have expounded on that, and they also made some remarks on his personality such as his attitude towards owning property (`it's a nuisance'), etc. He was described as an eccentric - which is true if one considers imposed norms as `center'. How can one describe a human being like Erdos to people who have never met this extraordinary man? Was he unreachable? Was he so preoccupied with writing papers (roughly 1500 and more) that he didn't know anything about the non-mathematical world? I think the best way to describe a human being to someone who has never met him, is to describe encounters with such a person, rather than to try to give a general `overall picture' of the person. Well, am I one of the lucky few who have met Erdos? Nonsense! I am one of the lucky many who have met `Uncle Paul'! This is how we would address him during the last so and so many years - "hello, Uncle Paul!", "Excuse me, Uncle Paul,....". He didn't care about being called `Professor Erdos'. This `Uncle Paul' was an expression of our respect for this great man, and of our love for him. I am one of the lucky many...because he was constantly on the move, spending a few weeks here and there, at this or that conference, at this or that university. His homes were with the people he met. He would stay with colleagues whenever possible; only during the last years did he stay in an apartment given to him by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, whenever he was in native Hungary. But most of the time he was not in Hungary. An anecdote says that many years ago, when he had to fill out a visa application for a trip to the USA, he answered the question: 'Country of Residence' by filling in 'Hungary, USA, Canada, Israel, Australia' and this was not a lie! These were the countries where he could be contacted at the time. Until the 1970's it was his mother who would know at any given time where Erdos could be 'found'; after she died, Ron Graham of Bell Labs (USA) who took over this function (and managed his finances, etc.). 'Uncle Paul' was a true cosmopolitan...

Paul Erdös (1913-1996) Paul Erdös (or, in the original Hungarian way of writing his name: Erdös Pál) died on the 20th of September 1996 in Warsaw (Poland) of a heart attack while participating at a combinatorics conference. The world has lost one of the greatest, most prolific, most original and most loveworthy mathematicians of all time. Erdös was highly original both in the mathematical and in the everyday sense. I have mentioned already a few aspects of his mathematics, but it is important to emphasize the overwhelming weight good questions had in his thinking of mathematics. Many mathematicians consider Erdös the greatest problem poser of all times. For him building a new theory - a primary ambition of many colleagues of him - was never an aim. He just asked the right questions and the theory grew out by itself like a plant. And he also had a superb ability to know which question to ask from whom, quite often simultaneously. It was not an uncommon sight to see three or four people sitting in different corners of a room, Erdös walking from one to the other, making significant progress whith each of them on problems belonging to quite different areas of mathematics at the same time. It is true (but should be interpreted correctly - see the next paragraph) that the whole life of Erdös was mathematics; he was doing it all the time. Once I was sitting with him at a concert; as soon as the concert began, Erdös pulled out a notebook from his briefcase and started solving problems. After about half an hour he turned to me and asked: "What is this noise?" But this again should be interpreted correctly: Erdös had his own vocabulary and in this vocabulary `noise' just stood for music. Actually he was very fond of music and he knew perfectly well that he was sitting at a concert, just it was normal for him to listen to the music

    Paul Erdos is dead
On 20 September 1996, one of the best mathematicians of our time died. Paul Erdos was attending a combinatorics conference when he suffered a double heart attack and died a few hours later. He was not exactly like most other human beings.
    • He didn't have a home, though he could afford one. Instead he had a network of friends all over the world with whom he'd stay. He'd just drop in suddenly and say ``My brain is open''. Without hesitation, his surprised friends would invite him in!
    • He thought money was a nuisance, and gave most of it away (if only this wasn't unusual among humans!)
    • He loved simple solutions to problems. More importantly, he could find them as well. He once heard that two mathematicians had produced a 30 page proof of a theorem. After ten minutes, he produced a two line proof!
Wouldn't you like to read more about him? There were several obituaries for him, even by commercial magazines and newspapers who normally pay no attention to maths. Here are a few links:

Paul Erdos was an amazing mathemetician who died in 1996. Without a home, Erdos would travel around the world, announcing to those around him "My brain is open". His open problems, many with a value on them, set the research agendas for countless researchers, and anyone lucky enough (or good enough) to solve one of his problems would invariably frame the resulting check and display it in the office. He had exquisite taste for what made for an interesting problem: hard enough to be worth the effort but doable with the tools available (or with tools that could be created from what was known). While I do not think I would like to have been Paul Erdos, I am certainly very glad to have met him and to have spent many hours in a fruitless effort to solve a few of his problems. His recent death and his amazing and strange life has led to both popular and technical books. I prefered "My Brain is Open" but also enjoyed "The Man Who Loved Only Numbers" (I found them sufficiently different to enjoy both of them). The other books are aimed at specialists, though reachable by advanced undergraduates.

    Paul Hoffman

Published by Hyperion Press (July 1998)
    ISBN 0786863625
Price $22.95 Book Description Customer Reviews Paul Hoffman, publisher of Encyclopedia Brittanica, has written a lively biography of Paul Erdos, a brilliant number theorist who spent his long and productive career with no permanent residence. Although Erdos had many oddities, such as the inability to handle some of the most mundane tasks such as taking a shower without pointing the nozzle in the wrong direction and getting water all over the floor, he was a very charming and lovable man, unlike, for example, John Nash throughout much of the latter's life. I think that a more accurate title would have been The Man Who Understood Only Numbers. Certainly he loved children and had no apparent malice towards anyone. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in people of unusual intelligence. This is not a math book. No knowledge of mathematics whatsoever is necessary for the enjoyment of this book and the appreciation of its subject.
