1 An accurate view of Greek Tragedy is currently very much a desideratum. While in the poetical world of Tragedy, a human individuality is formed through the imitation of the gods by participation in the life of Family and State, contemporary views obscure this divine-human dialectic. Falling within the logic developed by Nietzsche in his Birth of Tragedy , they assume a human individuality complete in itself and make it the subject of the tragic action. [1]
2 At stake in the recovery of a comprehensive view of Greek Tragedy is not mere archaeological exactness, but a right understanding of our spiritual history, ancient and modern. Tragedy has played an essential role in the development of that Hellenic spirit which together with the Judaic has animated our Western and Christian civilization. Moreover, a profound enthusiasm for Greek Tragedy has captured the European imagination since the end of the eighteenth century, and a deeper interpretation than that of Nietzsche is necessary to make that enthusiasm comprehensible.
3 This article proposes, therefore, first to locate Tragedy in its general spiritual context, by presenting it as a further development of the spiritual world that the war between the Titans and Olympians has established. Second, it will argue that the Nietzschean view of tragedy does not respect the primacy of the Olympian gods in the formation of human individuality. Third, in a consideration of

2 All the great tragedies, Hamlet Lear Macbeth , and Othello, begin with the hero's attempt to make himself the measure of his political and social world. This occurs with the greatest clarity in King Lear, where the King proposes to divide his kingdom amongst his daughters, in accord with their several expressions of love to himself. Macbeth's ambition leads him to kill the reigning King Malcolm and govern in his stead. Othello has such confidence in his virtue and position that he can venture to marry the daughter of a Venetian aristocrat. Hamlet, disgusted at his mother's hasty remarriage, hopes to flee Denmark, to enjoy the philosophic isolation and independence of Wittenberg. Whether it be love, ambition, honour or melancholy, each hero wishes to live through a subjective passion of his own. 3 This then reaches a certain completion. The result of King Lear's giving away his kingdom is his daughters' expelling him from home, into the storm. Hamlet contemplates taking his own life in the "to be or not to be" speech. Having killed his wife, Othello imagines the Last Judgement and his damnation. Macbeth, after having shed much innocent blood, realizes that a rule founded on the predictions of witches can have no stability. 5 Othello rights his relation somewhat to the state when he kills himself; he recalls a time when he had killed an enemy of the state who had insulted a Venetian in Aleppo, and he says that in killing himself he repeats this earlier act. He can no longer live in the institutions of the Venetian state, and in his own act he acknowledges this and makes it real. Macbeth's defeat and the victory of the rightful heir to the throne accomplish together what was shown in the other plays through the hero alone. The stages are these: Macbeth realizes the falsity of the Weird Sisters and is thrown back only on his own self-assertiveness. This self-reliance proves deficient against the actions of those who know themselves as under a divine law and acting as God's vice-regents; thus Macduff, fighting for the true king, kills Macbeth in single combat and restores Malcolm to the throne.

Picador USA, $24 by Paul Gediman One of the most exuberant and underappreciated voices of American fiction is back. It belongs to Leib Goldkorn, an impoverished 94-year-old flautist who, in 1997, shares a tiny apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side with his wife, "the former Clara Litwak," who, when not snoozing between insulin shots, hankers for Campbell’s soup and Slim Jims. This is quite a comedown for a man who sees himself as a product of the inter-war German-speaking world, in which Jews like Goldkorn thought themselves part of a superior, highly cultured bourgeoisie. Leib frequently notes that he is a graduate of the , and that, at the age of fourteen, he finished first in a woodwinds competition. He is a man for whom credentials matter, for whom the notion of a civilized world means everything. King of the Jews , won ample acclaim, but it also drew criticism for the way he employed broad comedy in writing about the Holocaust. Leib Goldkorn first appeared in 1976, in a novella called "The Steinway Quintet," and he reappeared in 1985, in

With his wife, Linda, McCartney's "solo" career centered mostly around his band, Wings. Despite critical failures early in his post-Beatles career, he established singles chart dominance with songs such as "Another Day," "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," "My Love" and "Live and Let Die." In 1973, McCartney achieved critical success with the release of

Primary EBV infection that is delayed until adolescence or adulthood frequently causes infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). Most carriers of EBV show no symptoms or pathology but in some circumstances EBV is associated with human cancers, the virus normally being present in all of the tumor cells of an EBV associated case. These cancers include lymphomas in immunosuppressed people (either as a result of medication after transplant surgery or AIDS), Hodgkin's disease, Burkitt's lymphoma in central Africa, nasopharyngeal carcinoma in South-East Asia and some gastric carcinomas. EBV infects human B lymphocytes and certain epithelial cells; infection of lymphocytes is readily accomplished in the laboratory and EBV drives the cells into a state of permanent proliferation. We are studying the mechanisms by which EBV causes human cells to grow, the role of the virus in human cancers and the regulation of the switch between latent persistence and virus replication. The virus proteins EBNA-1, EBNA-2, EBNA-3A, EBNA-3C, EBNA-LP and LMP-1 are required for EBV to cause permanent growth of human B lymphocytes and expression of the virus proten BZLF1 is the key switch from latency to the replicative cycle. The functions and mechanisms of action of these viral proteins comprise much of the EBV research at the Branch.

November 30, 1956 - May 17, 2003 From midnightspecial.org The world of folk music mourns the premature passing of Freyda Epstein. Freyda was killed in a car accident early Saturday morning, May 17 on her way to a music retreat in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was driving south on US 29 from Dulles Airport at 1am. Authorities say her death happened around 2-3 am. A man had just stabbed his wife and was fleeing from the scene, driving up Highway 29 on the wrong side of the road. He hit Freyda's car head on killing her. I knew Freyda for over 20 years. She was one of the nicest, most sincere people I've had the pleasure of knowing. I considered her voice one of finest in the folk genre. Her tenure with Trapezoid contributed to one of the best musical groupings I have heard in my 35 years in radio. I doubt you could find anyone who could say a negative word about Freyda, she was that kind of person. She left actively performing music and touring for a living because she wanted to make more of a contribution to humanity. Having achieved some of her goals she recently agreed to perform occasionally with Paul Reisler in a resurrected Trapezoid. She also had asked me to recommend songs for a new CD. (As she had asked many others as well.) We are cheated that this wonderful person with her glorious voice will no longer bring songs to life. I will pay tribute to her memory on the May 24 Midnight Special Rich Warren From daddyo.com

He is a leading researcher in the study of the neural basis of autism. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that affects the ability to communicate, form relationships, and respond appropriately to the environment. Autism can vary greatly in its severity, from mild social impairments to extreme retardation, bizarre behavior, and total withdrawal from the world. Some autistics develop "savant" abilities such as prodigious talents for mental arithmetic. Courchesne studies the brain wiring and genetic basis of autism, hoping to discover the causes of this mysterious disorder that afflicts one in 500 people.
