The Pluralists
  • Parmenides' successors seemed to be concerned with these five central Parmenidean doctrines:
  • Monism: there is no plurality
  • There is no motion
  • There is no generation or destruction
  • There is no qualitative change or differentiation
  • There is no void
  • All of the pluralistic responses to Parmenides (Empedocles, Anaxagoras, and the Atomists) were influenced by him, but rejected his extreme monism. They sought to reconcile, as much as possible, Parmenideanism with common sense.
  • They all disagreed with Parmenides about (1) and (2): all maintained plurality and motion. But they all accepted (3): there is no coming into existence or ceasing to exist. Where they differ among themselves is over (4) and (5): the reality of qualitative differences and the existence of the void.
  • Empedocles and Anaxagoras broke ranks with Parmenides over (4), but toed the line on (5). The atomists agreed with Parmenides that there is no genuine qualitative change, but claimed that there was empty space - a void. These points are all summarized in the table below:

    LOVE AND STRIFE
    A QUEST John Sutton
    Sydney, January 1999
Through this page you'll find information about this play, along with five short extracts. Love and Strife was originally written for the 1998-99 season of Philosophy Nights at the Steki Taverna, a Greek restaurant in Newtown, Sydney, at which audiences eat, drink, and heckle while watching a loose group of performers and philosophers present reconstructions, dialogues, and other dramatic variations on the history of western and eastern philosophy. Love and Strife has since been performed in Armidale, Medlow Bath, and at the Friend in Hand pub in Glebe. It's a mixed-up medley on the life and thought of the wild shamanic pre-Socratic, Empedocles of Acragas. With Diogenes Laertius, the ancient gossip, as M.C., the audience are taught about immortality, blending, and beans by the strangely reincarnated and unnecessarily grumpy mystagogue. Holderlin, Matthew Arnold, and Freud turn up to share their ecstatic encounters with Empedocles' work; Aristotle and some equally picky modern critics get what they deserve; and Nietzsche, planning a tragic drama about Empedocles' death in Etna, duets on the cosmic cycle. Many thanks to Ed Spence for his work on the Philosophy Nights series, and especially to the various cast members: Chris Burgess, Fiona Jenkins, Doris McIlwain, Dan Smith, and Caroline West. I will put up information and links when I get a chance on the other background material to the text (which improvises on and around fragments and texts written by and about Empedocles), and on the recent discovery of a new Empedocles papyrus fragment.

EMPEDOCLES EMPEDOCLES was born at Agrigentum in Sicily. He came of an old family, and inherited much wealth, a large part of which was spent in bestowing dowries on the poor maidens of the city. He took the popular side in politics, and gained such influence that he was offered the dictatorship of the republic. This he refused; preferring the spiritual influence following from his wide knowledge, his utterance of mystical and oracular sayings, and his free-handed liberality. Like Pythagoras and Plato, he is said to have spent much time in Eastern travel. Few details of his life are known to us with certainty; the story of his suicide in the crater of Mount Etna is but one of many fables reported of him. His philosophical principles were embodied in a poem, of which a few fragments have survived. The distinctive principle is the Evolution of the world from the four elements of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth; while the reverse process of Dissolution was going on simultaneously under the varying struggle between the opposing forces of attraction and repulsion, metaphorically spoken of as Love and Hate. This principle, far more nearly approaching the truth than the vague attempts of the earlier Ionian school, he applied in detailed explanation both of Kosmos and of living organisms. He says

Pythagoras' theory of heredity could not readily explain the obvious occurrence of shared physical traits between a mother and her child. Empedocles, another Greek thinker, accounted for Pythagoras' oversight by asserting that semen blended with female sexual fluid found inside a woman's body. An embryo, he believed, resulted from the mixing of male and female hereditary material found in these sexual fluids.

    Empedocles
Empedocles 490 BC 430 BC ) was a Greek philosopher and a citizen of Agrigentum in Sicily He maintained that all matter is made up of four classical elements (which he called roots water earth air and fire . In addition to these, he postulated something called Love philia ) to explain the attraction of different forms of matter, and of something called Strife ( neikos ) to account for their separation. He considered these to be distinct substances, with the four elements in solution with them.

"Empedocles" is the name of a Greek scientist-philosopher-poet circa 450 BC. He was known for his belief in the "four-element" theory - that all things are composed of four basic elements: earth, air, fire, and water. He believed that opposing forces (love and hate) acted upon these elements to combine and separate them into their varied forms (hate separates them, love combines them). He also formulated a primitive theory of evolution in which he claimed that humans and animals evolved from antecedent forms.

Peter Kingsleys ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY, MYSTERY, AND MAGIC should be read by all students of western philosophy, as well as by anyone interested in thought and scholarship. Here is a work that shines a light into ancient Greek thought, and calls into question the motives and standards of ancient - and unfortunately modern - scholarship. By itself, this makes the book worthy of wide attention. But what is more is that Kingsley brings philosophy back to its roots, helping enormously in the unpopular effort to shake us out of our current philosophical stupor and fascination with pointless problems.
