Empedocles (c. 490-430 BC) Empedocles was born in Acragas on the south coast of Sicily. The name Acragas is Greek, while the Latin name for the town was Agrigentum. Later the town was called Girgenti and more recently it became known by its present name of Agrigento. It was one of the most beautiful cities of the ancient world up to the time it was destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. It was, in Empedocles time, a rich city containing the finest Greek culture. Some of the Pythagoreans had come there after being attacked in their centre at Croton. Empedocles was born into a rich aristocratic family. He travelled throughout the Greek world participating fully in the extraordinary desire for learning and understanding which gripped that part of the world. He is described as follows by Sarton [5]:- He was not only a philosopher but a poet, a seer, a physicist, a social reformer, a man of so much enthusiasm that he would easily be considered a charlatan by some people, or become a legendary hero in the eyes of others. There are many legends regarding Empedocles life. He wrote poetry and 450 lines of such had been preserved by later writers such as Simplicius

EMPEDOCLES
c.493 - c.435 BC
Greek Philosopher
Empedocles, a philosopher of Greek descent, lived in Sicily. Empedocles discovered air as a separate substance. In his cosmology fire, air, water and earth mingle and separate under the compulsion of love and strife. He wrote a poetic treatise 'On Nature'. It contained ideas that anticipated the ideas of evolution, the circulation of the blood, and atmospheric pressure. www link :

Parmenides and Empedocles As for the "logic" that he introduced to the western world, this was not some dry intellectual exercise. It was nothing less than a gift from the gods which when understood right, and applied in our daily life, has the mysterious power of taking us back to the gods. Empedocles was born just a few years after Parmenides. He lived on the island of Sicily. He, too, is famous for the fundamental role he played in the development of the western world. Just like Parmenides he wrote his teachings in the form of poetry; and this poetry of his exerted a crucial role in creating what were soon to become known as the separate fields of philosophy, rhetoric, medicine, chemistry, biology, astronomy, cosmology and psychology. But Empedocles was far more than the cosmologist or scientist he is now made out to be. He was also a sorcerer whose words had a magic power that, for over two thousand years, has bewitched and confused even the brightest of minds. Like Parmenides he was a healer who specialized in ecstasy and in the ability to access other states of consciousness at will. He openly announced that he had realized his immortality; had discovered his own divinity. And through his poetry he recorded techniques, which are as powerful now as they ever have been, for leading people to the direct experience of their own divine nature. As for his amazingly intricate teachings about the details of the world around us: these were never meant just to stimulate people's curiosity and become an object of interest in themselves. On the contrary, their real purpose was to free us from the illusions that bind us and bring us to an immediate awareness of our own immortal soul.

(he glances at ROBERTA TOEWS) … I'd be giving you a promotion but with the economy the way it is... (JEB DUKES also glances at ROBERTA TOEWS, then back to GARY GARBER. He is in shocked disbelief.) JEB DUKES: Are you firing me? GARY GARBER: You can hold your head up, Jeb. You've done a good job here. JEB DUKES: I-I don't believe this. I... I thought this was just an evaluation. (GARY GARBER stands and shakes his head. It is a polite but firm dismissal.) GARY GARBER: I'm sorry. I really am. (JEB DUKES looks again at the woman, ROBERTA TOEWS. She merely looks back at him.) (JEB DUKES leaves the office. So does ROBERTA TOEWS. As if in a dream, JEB DUKES walks slowly through the office watching the other employees answering phones, gathering up papers, closing up their desks, preparing for the next day of work. He speaks to no one and leaves the building. The city streets are dark and wet. An older model car comes around the corner followed by a flashing police car, sirens blaring. The car passes JEB DUKES and crashes into a station wagon in the middle of the next intersection. The cars burst into flames. JEB DUKES, along with other horrified witnesses, run toward the accident. One of the OFFICERS blocks them from approaching the fiery wreck.)

He slowly stands, picks up the pistol and with a trembling hand holds it to his temple as he looks in the mirror. He pauses, the struggle with himself evident on his face. Just as he appears ready to pull the trigger, he drops it with a gasp of pain. The gun is glowing red hot. He stares at his hand which is now covered in blistering third-degree burns. Slowly, he reaches his hands to his face. Pinpricks of a glowing red light are coming through his cheeks. Using his fingernails he methodically rakes the flesh from his face leaving strips of glowing red. It's as if his skin is just a container for a raging fire within. http://www.centrocomp.it/castelvetrano/selinunte/templeb.html
It is a hypothesis that this temple was dedicated to Empedocles, the philosopher who expressed the theory of the transmigration of souls and discovered in himself the nature of a fish, because he swam magnificientiy, of a bird, as he ran quick as lightning, and, like his teacher Pythagoras, of a god. This temple should have been a thanksgiving to Empedocles who had saved Selinus from malaria. His biographers describe him so penetrated and convinced of his divine nature to ascribe these sentences to him: "I'm not a mortal anymore, but a god ! I wander about honoured by everybody because I deserve it.
Beautiful, crowned with fillets and wonderful flowers, I wander about the most famous cities".
As there are not certain elements to establish to whom the temple was consecrated, let's examine the technical aspect.
It is a hellenistic "in antis" building, where four Ionic columns and a Doric entablature formed the eastern front. The temple is 8,45 m. long and 4,60 m. wide, covering an area of 38,87 square metres.

Thales beschouwde het water als het oer-element;

Empedocles 490 BC 430 BC ) was a Greek philosopher and a citizen of Agrigentum in Sicily He maintained that all matter is made up of four classical elements (which he called roots water earth air and fire . In addition to these, he postulated something called Love philia ) to explain the attraction of different forms of matter, and of something called Strife ( neikos ) to account for their separation. He considered these to be distinct substances, with the four elements in solution with them. EMPEDOCLES (c. 490—430 B.C.), Greek philosopher and statesman, was born at Agrigentum (Acragas, Girgenti) in Sicily of a distinguished family, then at the height of its glory. His grandfather Empedocles was victorious in the Olympian chariot race in 496; in 470 his father Meto was largely instrumental in the overthrow of the tyrant Thrasydaeus. We know almost nothing of his life. The numerous legends which have grown up round his name yield very little that can fairly be regarded as authentic. It seems that he carried on the democratic tradition of his house by helping to overthrow an oligarch... [ read entire biography Source External Publication
