University to Remove Grad College Arch
Matthew Hersh
Sustaining serious structural damage after being hit by a tractor-trailer, Eisenhart Arch will be removed, repaired, and placed in a more safe location, according to Princeton University officials. The arch, which was built in 1951, marks the western approach to the Graduate College from Springdale Road. It has long stood as the gateway to the University's Graduate College. However, in recent years, as trucks have taken to driving on the narrow throughways that surround the area, it has been nicked and bumped as drivers have attempted to make the tight turn on to College Road. "It's not the first time it's been hit," said Pamela Hersh, director of the Department of Community and State Affairs. "However, it is the first time it has sustained significant structural damage." She said the University would remove the arch to "preserve its longevity" and would look for possible locations that may prove safer for the Gothic gateway. University officials said that the arch's current location is still a possibility, but cannot rule out alternate spots.

    William Francis Gray Swann Papers
(41 linear feet) B Sw1 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract The physicist W.F.G. Swann was a pioneer in high energy physics and the study of cosmic rays. Climbing the academic ranks from the University of Sheffield to the Universities of Minnesota, Chicago, and Yale, Swann was selected as the first director of the Bartol Research Foundation of the Franklin Institute in 1927, and remained there until his retirement in 1959. An able administrator and excellent mentor, he was best known for his popular work on the new physics, The Architecture of the Universe (1934) and for his research on cosmic rays. Avocationally, he was an accomplished cellist and in addition to performing, he helped organize and support the Swarthmore Symphony Orchestra and other local groups. He died at his home in Swarthmore in 1962. The Swann Papers consist of 41 linear feet of correspondence, class notes, lectures, and photographs documenting Swann's career at the Bartol Research Foundation from 1927 until the end of his life. The collection is wide ranging, touching on atmospheric electricity, particle acceleration, atomic bomb defense, atomic energy, electrets, electrodynamics, magnetism, music, quantum theory, radiation, relativity and Einstein, science and civilization, stratospheric flights (by balloon and airplane), thermodynamics, psychic science, and wave mechanics. It is particularly rich for study of the history of cosmic ray research and the Bartol Institute, and for study of the popularization of modern physical sciences.

ENG Sewall Wright Papers American Philosophical Society English Descriptive Summary Sewall Wright Papers, Ms. Coll. 60 17 linear feet American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Sewall Wright ranks among the most influential figures in the field of population genetics during the 20th century, and made important contributions to biostatistics, biometrics, and evolutionary theory. These papers contain much of Wright's professional correspondence, scattered research notes, and drafts of a small number of papers. Sewall Wright at Chicago, ca.1925 One of the pioneers of quantitative genetics and evolutionary biology, Sewall Wright was born in Wisconsin on December 21, 1889. He was, as he was fond of noting, the child of two cousins - the result of inbreeding. From early in his career, Wright contributed to emerging understandings of Darwinian natural selection and Mendelian genetics to lay the groundwork for modern population genetics and the Neo-Darwinian "modern synthesis." He made profound theoretical contributions in the theories of genetic drift and shifting balance, and was equally important in analyzing problems in the relationship of genotype and phenotype, biometrics, and biostatistics. The hallmark of Wright's scientific work was his ability to combine experimental and theoretical approaches, and to apply novel mathematical and statistical methods to analyze problems in biology. Many of his theoretical insights took years to prove empirically, and others were so computationally intensive that they could not easily be tackled in the pre-computer era, but his influence, along with that of his friend, J.B.S. Haldane, and some-time antagonist, R. A. Fisher, helped reorient the disciplines of evolutionary biology and genetics along more rigorous, quantitive lines.
