The story of Samuel Edge

part 1
by Trevor Genge
Trevor Genge has researched the history of Edge's shoes. This article covers his findings. If anyone has any comments or can provide any further information about any aspect of the family or the firm, would they please contact Trevor. His email address is: t.genge@blueyonder.co.uk In the busy country market town of Whitchurch, North Shropshire there were many clog makers. It must have been quite a prosperous trade, for the hard working people of the town and its surroundings, whether working on farms or in factories, would all have found use for the robust clog. High Street, Whitchurch. The buildings here have not changed much since Samuel's day. George Edge had relatives in the town but for himself had chosen the trade of bricklayer. He had married his wife Harriet Phillips in 1858 and they lived in Watergate Street on the Raven's Yard. Their first child was a son, Samuel, born 18th October 1861, and he was followed by William 1862, Mary Ellen 1865, George 1866, Albert Arnold 1868, Cornwallis 1874 and Georgina 1877. They were probably baptised in the Parish Church, within easy reach of their home. Eight other families lived on Raven's Yard including the innkeeper and baker, William Madeley. The Raven Inn. Today two shops make up the frontage.

Americans are seen losing their scientific edge William J. Broad NYT
Monday, May 3, 2004 The United States has started to lose its worldwide dominance in critical areas of science and innovation, according to federal and private experts who point to strong evidence like prizes awarded to Americans and the number of publications in major professional journals.
Foreign advances in basic science now often rival or at times exceed America's, apparently with little public awareness of the trend or its implications for jobs, industry, outsourcing, national defense and the vigor of the nation's intellectual and cultural life.
Europe and Asia are ascendant, analysts say, even if their achievements go unnoticed in the self-absorbed United States.
"The rest of the world is catching up," said John Jankowski, a senior analyst at the National Science Foundation, a federal agency that tracks science trends. "Science excellence is no longer the domain of just the U.S."

[February 18, 2004] William Fry demonstrates cutting edge thinking with deployment of knowledge sharing solution from Solcara London, 18 February 2003 - William Fry, one of Ireland’s most highly respected law firms, will be one of the first law firms in Ireland to deploy a true knowledge management system with the introduction of the Solcara Client-Partner solution. This forms part of William Fry’s ongoing programme to improve knowledge sharing and information access across the organisation thus enabling it to add more value to the services it provides to its clients.
Solcara Client-Partner enables law firms of all sizes to more effectively manage, share and use valuable content and knowledge. It encapsulates many years experience of working with a number of leading UK based law firms and addresses the issues that are critical to maintaining a competitive edge. This innovative knowledge management solution transforms the way in which law firms access content and knowledge by providing seamless integration of internal and online information sources.
Brendan Cahill at William Fry commented: As one of Ireland’s leading law firms, we have over 20 practice area specialisation’s and that translates into a lot of content and information being produced. In order to provide our clients with a top quality service we wanted to electronically capture and make that content more easily accessible and searched across the entire organisation. Solcara’s flexibility and unrivalled experience in the legal sector was proof that it could deliver exactly the solution we were looking for.”

The Guardian Explore Green Men is the first detailed study of the history of this motif for 25 years. Dr MacDermott's research follows the Green Man back from the previous earliest known examples into its hitherto unrecognised origins in India about 2,300 years ago. The book starts by discussing the 'paganisation' of Green Men in recent decades, then follows backwards through the Victorian Gothic Revival, Baroque, Rococco and Italianate revivals, to their heyday in the Gothic and the supposed origins in the Romanesque. As part of this discussion there is background information on the cultural changes that affected how Green Men were regarded. The author also discusses the comparisons that have been made with Cernunnus, Robin Hood, Jack-in-the-Green, woodwoses, Baphomet, Al Khidr and Bulgarian peperuda. She also investigates which pagan god Green Men supposedly represent.
