The Edge Index An Interview With William Gibson by Edo Van Belkom A recent, much longer interview with Gibson appears in The Edge #10. William Gibson’s All Tomorrow’s Parties is published as a Viking trade paperback this October (2000), at £9.99. Although he’d had stories published in sf magazines, Gibson became prominent with the publication of his first book, Neuromancer , in 1984. An urban and urbane novel, it quickly won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K Dick sf awards, immediately establishing Gibson as a great in the perceived field of sf. It didn’t stop there, though; it established him as one of the most significant and relevant authors writing in English. Neuromancer has been continuously in print since, its tenth anniversary commemorated by a hardcover reprinting. Neuromancer and some of Gibson’s early stories (‘Johnny Mnemonic’, 1981; ‘Burning Chrome’, 1982; ‘New Rose Hotel’, 1984), laid the groundwork for the ‘cyberpunk’ movement. ‘Cyberpunk’ is a kind of sf sub-genre; its works are set in a computer-driven, high-tech near-future and feature low-life protagonists interacting in hard-boiled detective type plots. The early stories were later published in the landmark 1986 collection Burning Chrome . That same year, the second book in what was to become The Neuromancer or Sprawl Trilogy

    Review by Gerald Houghton (1998)
When asked what he thought of William Burroughs, Samuel Beckett apparently replied, "He's a writer." Reading the obits last summer, it was obvious that William Seward Burroughs, writer or not, had certainly succeeded in remaining an enigma even in death. No one, they confirmed, owned more than a piece of the jigsaw, and assembling the thing always left one fragment unknown. You could call it the drugs, the homosexuality, or his wife's tragic death, but whatever it was, it has sustained - even nurtured - the legend. And, as the Mandelsonian millennium looms, any reasonable list of the centurial greats (i.e. not that recent Radio 3 travesty) will have to include him. He was a writer. There are, perhaps, two ways into what Ballard called the great mythographer. First, the books themselves, in all their exaggerated, delicate, scabrous and scatological beauty. It's an obvious thing to say, but Naked Lunch will still be an extraordinary book tomorrow, let alone almost forty years ago.

A selection of direct and challenging portraits and landscapes by contemporary artist William Beckman are on view at the Frye in Painting on the Edge: The Art of William Beckman Aug. 2 - October 27.  Beckman paints himself, loved-ones, and the land he has lived upon.  His subjects, whether mother or lover, are delivered to the viewer with gripping details, without embellishment.  His work, whether of a spouse, or parent, partner or friend, is the product of a long-term relationship between artist and subject.  These relationships are what inspire the content on all of Beckmans work and in a room full of work by Beckman, it becomes clear that this content is deeply felt. Beckman creates his figurative art using a unique method.  He applies paint, then shaves off layer after layer from the surface with a razor, repainting and polishing the canvas to create lustrous, absorbing images.  His realism is stripped of sentiment, his un-idealized portraits scrupulously rendered and his expansive tracts of farmland theatrically scaled. Each painting is epic in significance and matter-of-fact at the same time. The exhibition is organized by the Frye Art Museum and includes works with these themes: boxes, couples, landscapes, drawings, portraits, and figures. Works from Beckmans earliest period consist of a series of boxes (from 1967 to 1970) depicting solitary female nudes within imaginary domestic interiors. Later, he created frontal images, primarily of his former wife Diana. In many cases these figures are riveting, the model virtually staring down the viewer.

    Edge Cutter
    (A Langford Joh story)
by William Alan Rieser As the Earth Ambassador to the Confederation, this is the only report I've done myself without the help of a team of re-writers. I am Langford Joh. When the Andromedans accidentally dropped in on us, it made life in the Embassy more complicated than we could have anticipated. For one thing, not one of the media writers got it right, in spite of their kinky, paisley imaginations involving an unusual contact situation. There is no resemblance molecularly between our denizens and the amorphous Andros, whose shapes and colors are in a constant state of unpredictable flux. For another, they are forced by our atmosphere to transport themselves within floating, translucent cylinders and are physically helpless to do much more than talk to us. As an agent in the hierarchy at the time, I got involved early on to determine the possibility of their being any kind of a threat to American security.
Other than their vast communicative powers, which are considerable, my investigation proved that beyond the Andros' ability to speak and influence our people, they were no more malevolent and even less dangerous than any homegrown politician. Ambassadors and technologies were soon exchanged and a new era began. Within five years, mutual trust became possible and we were on the brink of achieving the lasting friendship that we now enjoy with these beings. There was, however, an incident in those days which could have jeopardized everything. Only now am I permitted to publish the story after my retirement.

William Sloane, otherwise known as Milligan Sloane III (1906-74), wrote - as far as I'm aware - only these two novels, but they're totally wonderful and need to be read, preferably as a pair.
