This Week in History Arthur Eddington Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington December 28 November 22 ) was arguably the most important astrophysicist from the early 20th century . The Eddington limit , the natural limit to the luminosity that can be radiated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honour. He is famous for his work regarding the Theory of Relativity . Eddington wrote an article, Report on the relativity theory of gravitation , which announced Einstein 's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world. Because of World War I , new developments in German science were not well known in England. Biography Early years Eddington was born in Kendal England In , Arthur Eddington began his statistical study of stellar motions. During World War I , Eddington was called up for military service. Being a Quaker and a pacifist , he refused to serve in the army, and wanted to be allowed to do alternative service instead, but such a thing was not possible at the time. Scientific friends of his solved the problem by successfully arguing to relieve him from military duty because of his importance for science. After the war, Eddington travelled to the island of Principe near Africa to watch the

VII.4. ARTHUR S. EDDINGTON Arthur S. Eddington (1882-1944). El argumento lo presentó Eddington en un libro titulado Filosofía de la ciencia física, a priori pero no en el sentido kantiano de ser innato, en vista de que se requieren experiencias y observaciones para adquirirlo, sino en el sentido del ictiólogo, de quien podemos predecir que con la red que usa para pescar no obtendrá peces menores de dos pulgadas; en otras palabras, es, posible hacer juicios a priori sobre lo que los físicos van a encontrar si examinamos los procedimientos que usan. Es por el carácter al menos parcialmente a priori del trabajo de los físicos, que impide a ese conocimiento ser objetivamente puro, sino que lo hace más bien subjetivo, y por lo selectivo del proceso de investigación, en el que el conocimiento es lo que se "filtra" a través de la metodología y los conceptos usados, por lo que Eddington llamó a su filosofía "subjetivismo selectivo". Conviene señalar las semejanzas que existen entre el subjetivismo selectivo y otras ideas filosóficas previamente mencionadas; por ejemplo, Wittgenstein propuso en su Tractatus a priori.

Es un objeto común dentro de ese ambiente que llamo mundo; ¿cómo voy a describirla?; tiene extensión; es, hasta cierto punto, permanente; noto que su superficie está pintada pero que, ante todo, es sustancial. Cuando digo "sustancial", no sólo quiero significar que no se viene abajo cuando me apoyo en ella, sino que está constituida por "sustancia", y en virtud de esa palabra intento transmitir a usted cierto concepto de su naturaleza intrínseca. Es una cosa, no como el espacio, que es una mera negación; no como el tiempo, que es ... Dios sabe qué! La característica distintiva de una "cosa" consiste precisamente en estar constituida por "sustancia", y no veo mejor manera de describir la sustancia, en este caso, que tomar como ejemplo ese trozo de naturaleza representado por una mesa ordinaria. No insisto más sobre el particular porque sería caer dentro de un círculo vicioso. Después de todo, si usted es un hombre de buen sentido, un hombre no muy atormentado por escrúpulos científicos, puedo dar por sentado que comprende la naturaleza de una mesa ordinaria. Es más; me han hablado de hombres dotados de buen sentido que creían poder conocer mejor el misterio de su propia naturaleza siempre que los hombres de ciencia llegaran a explicársela en términos sencillos como los que se emplean para explicar la naturaleza relativamente simple de una mesa.
