Henry Ernest Dudeney came from a family which had a mathematical tradition and also a tradition of school teaching. Henry's father was a schoolmaster and his father, Henry's paternal grandfather, although he began life as a shepherd, taught himself mathematics and astronomy and left his life on the hills to become a schoolmaster in Lewes. Henry learnt to play chess at a young age and soon became interested in chess problems. From the age of nine he was composing problems and puzzles which he published in a local paper. Although he only had a basic education, never attending college, he had a particular interest in mathematics and studied mathematics and its history in his spare time. As he pointed out:- The history of mathematical puzzles entails nothing short of the actual story of the beginnings and development of exact thinking in man. Certainly, as he realised in reading about the history of mathematics, its development is closely linked with puzzle solving.

Verbal arithmetic
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Verbal arithmetic , also known as cryptarithmetic , is a type of mathematical game Mathematical games include many topics which are a part of recreational mathematics , but can also cover topics such as the mathematics of games, and playing games with mathematics. Mathematical Games was the title of a long-running column on the subject by Martin Gardner in Scientific American. He inspired several new generations of mathematicians and scientists through his interest in mathematical recreations. Mathematical Games was succeeded by Metamagical Themas , a similarly distinguished but shorter-running column by Douglas Hofstadter.

Before widespread availability of typewriters and computers, letters were always written by hand. Nowadays, that is still done, mainly for informal letters. Henry Ernest Dudeney
H enry Ernest Dudeney was England's greatest inventor of puzzles; indeed, he may well have been the greatest puzzlist who ever lived. Today there is scarcely a single puzzle book that does not contain (often without credit) dozens of brilliant mathematical problems that had their origin in Dudeney's fertile imagination.
He was born in the village of Mayfield in 1857. Thus he was sixteen years younger than Sam Loyd , the American puzzle genius. In the 1890s they collaborated on a series of puzzle articles for the magazineTit-Bits, and later they arranged to exchange puzzles for their magazine and newspaper columns. This may explain the large amount of duplication in the published writings of Loyd and Dudeney. Of the two, Dudeney was probably the better mathematician. Loyd excelled in catching the public fancy with manufactured toys and advertising novelties. Dudeney's work was mathematically more sophisticated. Like Loyd he enjoyed clothing his problems with amusing anecdotes.
Dudeney's first book, "The Canterbury Puzzles", was published in 1907.

Henry Ernest Dudeney
Dudeney's eerste boek, "The Canterbury Puzzles", werd in 1907 gepubliceerd.

Dudeney worked as a clerk in the Civil Service from the age of 13 but continued to study mathematics and chess. He began to write articles for magazines and joined a group of authors which included Arthur Conan Doyle. He was doing well publishing mathematical puzzles under the pseudonym 'Sphinx'. In 1884 Dudeney married and his wife, who wrote full length novels which proved popular helped made the family very well off financially. Sam Loyd started sending his puzzles to England in 1893 and a correspondence started between him and Dudeney. The two were the main creators of mathematical puzzles and recreations of their day and it was natural that they should exchange ideas. Of the two Dudeney showed the more subtle mathematical skills. He sent a large number of his puzzles to Loyd and became very upset when Loyd began to publish them under his own name.
