We used the kettle every day on one ring and I cooked an omelette and boiled eggs occasionally for lunch. The rest of the time we ate at the pool bar.

Papus GÉRARD ANACLET VINCENT ENCAUSSE, o médico que tornou-se famoso no meio ocultista sob o pseudônimo de PAPUS, nasceu no dia 13 de julho de 1865, em Corunã-Espanha, as sete horas da manhã, sendo filho de pai francês, o químico Louis Encausse, e mãe espanhola, de origem cigana, a senhora Irene Perez. O jovem Gérard criou-se, assim, em um ambiente favorável a um futuro estudante de Alquimia e de Tarot. Em 1869 a família Encausse veio estabelecer-se em Paris, no bairro Montmartre, onde Papus iniciou seus estudos, primeiro no Colégio Rollin, depois aos 17 anos, na Faculdade de Medicina de Paris. Ainda jovem, dedicou-se nas horas vagas ao Ocultismo; enquanto seus colegas preocupavam-se com os problemas políticos da Europa e em percorrer todos os autores da Ciência Oficial, Papus passava suas tardes na Biblioteca nacional de Paris ou na Biblioteca do Arsenal estudando os autores clássicos da Alquimia e da Cabala, tomando notas dos principais manuscritos tão zelosamente guardados há séculos nessas preciosas bibliotecas. Papus teria sido iniciado por Henri Delaage em 1882, segundo ele mesmo nos diz, na Sociedade dos Filósofos Desconhecidos, ordem que teria sido fundada por Louis Claude de Saint-Martin no século XVIII, na França. Com 17 anos de idade, o jovem Papus passou a destacar-se no seio do Grupo que passou a integrar, pela seriedade com que procurava as chaves da Iniciação.
