Doob studied at Harvard and obtained his doctorate there in 1932 for a thesis entitled Boundary Values of Analytic Functions. He was appointed to the University of Illinois in 1935. He became a full professor there 10 years later. Doob's work was in probability and measure theory , in particular he studied the relations between probability and potential theory Doob built on work by and, during the 1940s and 1950s, he developed basic martingale theory and many of its applications. Doob's work has become one of the most powerful tools available to study stochastic processes. In 1953 he published a book which gives a comprehensive treatment of stochastic processes, including much of his own development of martingale theory. This book Stochastic Processes has become a classic and was reissued in 1964. He is also the author of a well known book on measure theory. A CONVERSATION WITH JOE DOOB
    J. LAURIE SNELL
This was the basis for an article in Statistical Science Vol. 12, No. 4, November 1997
Abstract: Joseph L. Doob was born in Cincinnati Ohio, February 27, 1910. He received the degrees: AB in 1930, AM in 1931, and PhD in 1932 from Harvard University. From 1932 to 1934 Doob did postdoctoral work at Columbia University. In 1933-1934 he held a Carnegie Corporation Fellowship. Doob was a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois from 1935 until his retirement in 1978. He was Commissar of the Champaign-Urbana Saturday Hike for about 25 years after World War II. Doob is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and Foreign Associate of the Academy of Sciences, France. He was President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 1950 and of the American Mathematical Society in 1963 and 1964. He received the National Medal of Science in 1979. In 1984 Doob was awarded the Career Prize by the American Mathematical Society for "his fundamental work in establishing probability as a branch of mathematics and for his continuing profound influence on its development." Doob as President of AMS (1963 and 1964)
