Alfred Dixon was the son of the Rev G T Dixon, who was the Wesleyan Minister of Northallerton, and he was the older brother of Arthur Dixon . Alfred was educated at the Quaker School in Kendal. From Kendal he went to Bath where he attended Kingswood School. Whittaker , in [4], describes him as a prodigy:- ... the school examiner, finding that Dixon obtained the maximum marks in papers set at the annual examination, one year deliberately set a problem that could not be done, only to receive from Dixon an elaborate proof of its impossibility. He attended London University, graduating with an M.A., then in 1883 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1886 as Senior Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos (ranked first in the list of students with First Class degrees). He had been taught by a number of famous mathematicians at Cambridge, including Glaisher , Rouse Ball Forsyth , and he attended lectures by Cayley . Dixon was appointed a Fellow of Trinity College in 1888 and was awarded the second Smith's prize. Dixon was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Queen's College, Galway, Ireland in 1893. (This university is now named University College, Galway.) Dixon's appointment was to fill the chair left vacant when George J Allman, a noted historian of mathematics, retired. The appointment to Galway seems to have been good for Dixon since his mathematical output improved both in quantity and in quality from this time.

Alfred
R.
White ALFRED R. WHITE was born in 1877 to Frederic and Ida White. His father was a farmer at Broadkiln Hundred, in Sussex County, Delaware. At the time of the 1920 Census, he was living with his mother, Ida White at 433 Chambers Street. He was at that time in the self-employed in cigar business. Also at home was his 28 year old brother Amory K. White, then the manager of an automobile tire company. Alfred White served as City Clerk from 1923 to 1927, during the administration of Mayor Victor King , who was elected on a Non-Partisan slate. After leaving city government, he took a position as a salesman in a department store, which is where he was working in 1930. A bachelor, he was at the time of the 1930 Census lodging at 523 Pine Street, the home of realtor Henry Donahoo and his wife Edna. He was living at 653 Washington Street in Camden's Ninth Ward when he was hospitalized with appendicitis in October of 1936. After recuperating with his brother and sister in Staten Island NY, Alfred White appears to have returned to Camden, as an Alfred White is shown in the 1947 Camden City Directory as living in rented quarters at 518 Mickle Street, and working as a home visitor for the Department of Municipal Welfare. Camden Courier-Post - October 17, 1936

Arthur Lee Dixon was the second son of the Rev G T Dixon, who was the Wesleyan Minister of Northallerton, and he was the younger brother of Alfred Cardew Dixon . Arthur was educated at Kingswood School in Bath which he attended from 1879 to 1885. This school was a Methodist school founded by Wesley, the founder of Methodism. After leaving Kingswood School Arthur Dixon entered Worcester College, Oxford, where he studied mathematics, graduating in 1889. Arthur Dixon won a prize fellowship to Merton College, Oxford, where he was appointed in 1891. Merton College was one of the Oxford Colleges with a strong historical mathematical connection, since the first school of mathematics there was organised by Thomas Bradwardine in the middle of the 14 th Century.

    Weaver, David Stathem,Papers,
MC 26 This collection relates to David Stathem Weaver's career in agricultural engineering and extension work at North Carolina State University. In a personal quest to "relieve human drudgery by mechanical means," Weaver served as a farm leader and educator throughout North Carolina from 1923 to 1966. Known as the "father of rural electrification in North Carolina," he conducted a survey, convincing then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Congress that rural North Carolinians needed electricity. The collection contains speeches, news clippings, correspondence, and photographs. Of particular interest are four scrapbooks dedicated to Weaver's career in agriculture within the University and the fraternity Alpha Zeta. One scrapbook contains a letter written by his maternal grandfather in 1862 that describes his experiences as a Union soldier in the Civil War.
